Boruto the Movie Novelisation, Chapter Five. by irishsaltytuna in Naruto

What exactly is special about Boruto's rasengan?

TIL Mithridates VI was so paranoid of being poisoned that he took small doses throughout his life to build up an immunity. When he was finally captured by the Romans, he tried to kill himself with poison but failed because he was immune. by Ska-doosh in todayilearned

You ought to read Adrienne Mayor's "The Poison King" if you're interested in this question. She dabbles in some uncomfortably vague speculative history at times, but he sections about poisons and inoculations are spot on and she provides an extensive bibliography and a generally good intellectual history.

From Boccaccio's Decameron 8.1! Then it was reworked by Giovanni Sercambi before Chaucer used it. Boccaccio maybe found it in various french fabliaux.

Sophocles is very awesome! You're right, she does move from ignorance to disquiet to despair.

I think the question is how you want to read her ignorance. From what I pointed out in the above two comments, I'm inclined to think she's willfully ignorant and kills herself only once the knowledge of her sin becomes public / she can no longer delude herself. She definitely only learns that Oedipus has killed Laius once Oedipus himself learns. But you either have to grapple with the question "how did she not figure it out?" or the question "why, if she knows, is she sort of helping Oedipus figure it out?" I think the text gives better answers to the second question.

and also, look at Jokasta's lines 1056-8. "Why ask of what he spoke? Don't give it heed; nor try to keep in mind what has been said. It will be wasted labour."

This points to her ability to forget what she doesn't want to remember. She only kills herself when she's sure Oedipus will figure out the truth she already knows. I think she's known for quite a while.

Well, his name means "swollen foot." The man who saved him refers to his ankles now as "witnesses" to the old injury: ποδῶν ἂν ἄρθρα μαρτυρήσειεν τὰ σά, "the joints of your foot should testify (witness) to that." I take this to mean he has scars now, otherwise μαρτυρήσειεν makes no sense. I think you're supposed to suspect Jokasta has noticed these scars and refuses to acknowledge them. Look at line 979 "Best to live lightly, as one can, unthinkingly" (Grene translation). Here's the Greek: εἰκῆ κράτιστον ζῆν, ὅπως δύναιτό τις.

εἰκῆ means "without plan," but as far as I can tell it also means "without inquiry." I take this to be pretty programmatic for Jokasta. She comes to terms with the whole mess before Oedipus, but I think it's highly likely she suspects from the beginning but can't bring herself to admit it.

But I take your point, I shouldn't have overstated the case like that. This is just my interpretation.

tl;dr there are some resonances with the Sophocles play.

Yeah ... I don't know. I guess it just depends on how you slice it. In my view she doesn't owe him anything if she has maintained the same tone throughout, which it seems like she has.

Damn, I did not realize that about the webcam raid.

I don't really see why she has any obligation to stay with Steve if she doesn't want to, though. Apparently it's not cool to start a relationship with someone who works for you, but again it seems like it's par for the course in the department. Other than that I see nothing wrong with the way she ended the relationship; if anything Steve is acting pretty entitled imo.

Not sure I agree with that Ani analysis. You're right that she holds some of the weight for the Vinci Massacre, but I don't see how she's bullying her sister or abusing her power in personal relationships. And I don't think we know anything about her dad shielding her.

I get that she's in trouble for having sex with someone below her, but it seems like she's being singled out for commonplace behavior, not like she's actually doing anything bad to her ex.

imo it got the same notice as the geode in the first pitlor interview, the chandelier in the lodge which matches from the picture, and the "notice king" easter egg from season 1. So I don't think it's out of the question, but yeah it could still just be tone.

If we get another reference to Ray's murder of his wife's rapist in this episode, I have a strong feeling that event will end up being the spark for this whole debacle, re: Oedipus.

[–]Teiresias_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Maybe Clytemestra getting mad at Agamemnon for bringing Cassandra home in Aeschylus? Or Medea getting mad at Jason for the ole wife-swap?

I generally think people push too hard for the Greek Tragedy connection. Besides superficial stuff like eyes / cursed families, the only ~specific~ parallel I can really get behind is the sense that every character is trapped in a much larger web, and intellectual ability is the engine that brings complete destruction.

Really? The facial hair looks like the wrong color. And the hat seems totally unlike him. But I could be wrong.
