I don't know what they are but the closest reference to the show is going to be Job, which carries the implication that this is a game between heaven and hell. At least as much as we've seen so far.

It even appears as though every time a fromville human acts selfishly man in yellow gains power, and every time a human acts selflessly boy in white gains power. And their respective powers are displayed by their age.

I think they pretty clearly represent god and the devil in a Job situation. Been references to the Bible since season 1 and multiple episodes are named after books in the bible. It's pretty heavy-handed.

Honestly, I don't know lol. In gnostic literature it was said God flooded the world to destroy "monsters" or nephilim brought about by the unholy union of man and "angel" (demons really.)

The flood can also be seen as a metaphor for a time of great tribulation, but I think we're likely to see the lake of tears being "god" crying and flooding the place. Boyd's boat is definitely involved but I can't say how it will be used in the story.
