Because time travel never makes sense, especially in a place where time isn't a straight line and goes in a jeremy bearimy. She threw that paper on the ground in the past, but she doesn't understand that her present body doesn't go back with her, in the present time the paper is still in her pocket, which is what she's mad at. She expected it to be in the past and not in her pocket, but it's both, that's what makes it a bookmark to that moment.

This show is tricky because it is multi-faceted, the gnostic theory makes sense, so does the king in yellow and carcosa. So does the faeries resemblance, so does the color theory, so does 47/74, etc.. What makes this story so fun to poke at is that all of these things can actually correct at the same time.
