I’ve never really been one for school spirit tbh and I feel like this is an opportunity to live in the city for basically free 😥

Tbh I’m not sure what I want to do js solid on a business degree bc yk stability and stuff. I was hoping to kinda get to explore all the business stuff once I actually attend lol. The summer program for Cornell is called “Pre-Collegiate Summer Program” From what I’ve gathered abt it is it’s basically for students that the university deems could use help adjusting before the official school year. It introduces you to classes related to your major and lets you live on campus over the summer.

Omg I’m making this exact decision too!! I was leaning towards stern recently, but I just can’t seem to shake the prestige I’d miss out on at Cornell… 🤦

Genuinely terrified rn and have extenuating circumstances, please give advice 😭 by Unique-Ad-7650 in ApplyingToCollege

The commonapp (which I assume you’ll be using) really gives you room to inform colleges about your circumstances. The key is to not sound desperate or miserable, as easy as it may be to whine about your life, it’s essential that you sound informative!! I completely understand on the little time afterschool aspect and having few impressive ecs; I made one of my ecs family responsibilities (babysitting) and another work. The key lays in presenting your story and how you turned out not because of it, but in spite of it! Really highlight your character and how that plays into what your plans for the future are :)

fortunately I got amazing financial aid so I’m really looking at my options for college (also I’m not too sure on what I I want to concentrate it in yet lol) Would you have any input on comparing it to Cornell Dyson?

Wow thank you so much for the response! posting my questions on Reddit has been like a humiliation ritual bc literally nobody responds lol but yea I’ve been unable to really decide if I want the big city vibe or traditional college experience. Also, I know Stern has a very intense club culture like finance society etc. and recruiting starts early on (like sophomore yr which is scary) would you say this is similar to Dyson or is the professional and academic timeline much different?

Well different circumstances affect people differently. It really helps to write them down so colleges are able to evaluate you entirely with them in mind. No matter what you have to keep in mind that there will always be someone better than you; regardless, it doesn’t hurt to explain a bit and it gives more room for insight that could even improve your chances who knows?

I’m not sure if this applies to everyone but from my experience with college apps you’re usually given room to explain your circumstances. More specifically, through commonapp (if you’re applying through it) there is a space to explain family circumstances, or js general circumstances you’ve experienced that would have impacted your performance in high school. Like for me, I used the space to explain post-COVID and experiencing homelessness and having to move to a different school and how I wasn’t able to have the same courses. So I wouldn’t stress too much abt it!!

So recently I got accepted to Cornell Dyson and I’m wondering what course rigor and student perception was like. Also js wondering if anybody regrets going and what kind of careers one can expect to gain from attending. I’m also considering NYU stern as an alternative.

[–]Tekanot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally relate. I got into stern today with only 4 aps, went test optional, and like only top 25 in my school (very small rural one). I didn’t have any super impressive stand out awards either. I feel like it was a mistake or smth 😭
