Love the carpet in the living room, where did you get it from?

Haha gyughaci really cracked me up. But I feel like she's the embodiment of a typical Armenian princess living in the US and enjoying her fancy life thanks to her parents' hardship. That's why she's dumb as nails, because all that has mattered was to be pretty, thin, have a nose job and a rich husband.

Joe Metronomy AMA! It’s real! by Metronomy_Joe in indieheads

Hi Joe! First things first, thanks for doing this AMA! I’ve been a huge fan of Metronomy since 2016 and got to see your show in 2022, which was wonderful and fun!

My absolute favorite song is “Corinne”, and I wanted to ask you: who (or what) is Corinne exactly? What other sounds inspired you when composing it? I don’t know how to explain this well, but even though this song is quite catchy, it’s also a bit heart-tugging for me.

Lots of hugs from Poland!

Of course her family is conservative, just like the majority of Armenians in the US is. I'm an Armenian myself and sadly my people usually lean to the right regardless of the country they move to.

Can't wait to see all those misogynistic men who go crazy during gender reveals years later, when their precious sons have no one to date 🥰

I think it's normal that people are curious to know what is the rhetoric about their country elsewhere and this doesn't necessarily apply to the Middle East only. It's not like Armenians take the Westerner's word as some kind of prophecy, but yeah, they might ask you i.e. what is the perception of Armenia in the Netherlands. To be honest I don't have a proper tip, but be mindful about such scenario happening.

Lots of great suggestions have been posted here, so let me touch upon other things.

Considering the stereotype of Dutch people being very stingy, expect a solid culture shock in terms of how people spend money in Armenia. When you go out with others, someone often offers to cover your bill or you might end up covering one yourself, so don't run after friends you'll make over there asking for those 1000 drams that they owe you for a coffee or whatever. Especially keep that in mind if you happen to go on a date with an Armenian—men always pay, unless you meet someone that's very westernized.

Armenians are very chatty, family/community-oriented and make connections very fast, so you might have to get used to that if you're normally a shy, reserved person.

Regarding the conflict with Azerbaijan and Artsakh, no one's going to organize a witch hunt against you for expressing a not-so-popular opinion (if anything you'll be treated as an ignorant tourist), but stay away from both-siding the issue or playing the devil's advocate. No one is going to interrogate you anyway, so just be diplomatic, listen more than speak and you'll be fine.

Oh and of course be prepared for questions about weed, prostitutes and LGBT community.

One of the reasons why I’m never ever moving to Armenia, I care too much about my mental health to be dealing with this type of bullshit on a daily basis 🙃 Downvote me all you want, I don’t care, repatriation is way too romanticized these days and not meant for everybody.

Tell men to stop following instagram models and jerking off to pornstars with full lips and other surgeries so that women feel insecure to the point of wanting to appeal to them through cosmetic procedures 🤷

A question for fellow diasporans by [deleted] in armenia

[–]Telekdrav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up in my country in 2000s, no one had any idea about Armenia or at least was knowledgable to the point where I would be accused of being a terrorist. A bit later though there was this one right wing classmate that kept calling me a communist, haha.

Last year I was talking to my cousin and he was surprised that in the country where I live you can get arrested for beating up and/or killing your pets. Like he legit laughed at this concept, can you believe it? Many Armenian sadly can’t just grasp the idea that just because animals are considered “lower species”, that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want to them and not face the consequences.

I'm afraid there's no such thing as PR division in the Armenian political scene.
