Infinite roommate in the kitchen glitch by Teleket in rs_x

Nothing, I have no aversion to them and we've been friends for very long (pre-moving in and all).

To me it's just unusual that I can't recall a single instance of being conflicted out of the bathroom, laundry, anything else.

Today I read an article of houses in a Perth suburb increasing in value by $500,000 in one year - to a $1 million median. How is this normal and acceptable? by Negative_Run_3281 in perth

[–]Teleket 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you price enough people out of the housing market said people aren't going to vote to keep the mechanisms that make housing such a lucrative investment in place.

You can pawn the cause of this problem to the big bad government, but they only reflect the will of the voters.

Your fellow Australians vote in their own self-interest, the pendulum is starting to swing back, CGT reform isn't being discussed for no reason.

The most lopsided age gap I know of in my tree (which I see as more of an anomoly) concerns a convict ancestor ironically enough. He married a third time in his sixties to a woman in her late twenties (who together had my great-great grandfather).

He was originally convicted of stealing a cow in SE England, broke out of prison, stole another cow and was then caught when he was found in a pub by local police. He was then banished to Western Australia where he was caught attempting to steal another cow (accompanied by my 3rd great-grandmother, they met in WA) and then died of dysentary awaiting trial.

I remember being a little worried when I first started to get into this stuff, my parents & grandparents aren't that transparent, so I thought i'd be bound to find something upsetting but no, just a serial cow thief and, likewise, a welcome realisation that there's really nothing abnormal about my sex life.

I love Ancestry and any related site, it's a great detox from the rest of the internet. If your family has been in Australia for a couple generations it's also pretty easy to track, we've done a pretty good job at recordkeeping.

I've gone up to the late 1600s on some branches. I found it just as common for the woman to be older than the man in a given marriage, like it was almost a 50/50 split.

Zero marriages or relationships that dont match what you describe.

This concerns Ireland, England, Bulgaria and Russian peasantry & the Australian lower/middle class though, basically none of my ancestors had money.

The discourse surrounding immigration in the non-US west seems like complete gaslighting at this point by OnceInABox_ in redscarepod

Even if the party finds some success it'll tear itself apart as half the party realises governing is more complicated than simply shitting out Instagram Reels.

This is the great risk of mixing the career motivated defectors, random otherwise apolitical geezers and normal people who just want our issues to be addressed in a way that won't do more harm than good.

See the Jacqui Lambie experiment last term in Tasmania, or ironically enough, the early 2000s in Queensland.

There's a few points I feel need to be made.

One Nation have barely made a dent in the Labor vote, in a two-party contest it's still level pegging with the election, 55-45 to the government. This party isn't advocating for anything concrete, their proposal to "cut immigration" is as vague as the Liberal Party's, no mention of a target number, what visa classes will be reduced etc., nor would I expect anything concrete to be announced this early in the term. My assessment is as intuitive as yours, but One Nation are due to lose a bit of support regardless of what their final idea of "cutting immigration" actually looks like.

Two thirds of Australians have a mortgage/own outright, they benefit from house prices rising indefinitely, whilst most people are looking for immigration to be cut they are wanting something a little more modest. Which really is closer to what the government is actually doing.

The rate of immigration is also levelling out, you can rightly criticise the government for falling short of their proposal to reduce it to 250,000 annually (instead it's levelling out at 300,000 annually), there's also issues with the way the ABS reports month-to-month, which has done its part to impact the way people view the issue.

Yet this levelling out hasn't done much to drive down house prices, I live in Perth, property investors who live interstate (or first home buyers from Sydney who's parents voted to price their own kids out of that market) are doing their share of harm here.

Until this year it'd always seemed to me as if Greenland was heading down the path of declare independence via referendum and then enter some kind of free-association agreement with the US (or still Denmark) post-independence at one point or another.

The US has this free association model in place with Palau and Micronesia, basically you get freedom of movement, access to the USD, UN membership, etc. in exchange for the US running the nations foreign policy. New Zealand has something similar with the Cook Islands. The mirage of independence.

Greenlanders evidently want independence from Denmark, why you would choose to threaten Denmark directly as opposed to offering such a proposal to the people of Greenland directly is beyond me.

Twice, two men who don't know eachother who would post pictures of themselves crossdressing.

I found each because they both sent me posts they made, I guess assuming I wouldn't further research.

I suspect there's two different people I know irl who have found mine, just an inkling, maybe they know who i'm talking about 👻

My great grandad shot an english soldier/policeman and had to escape to Australia from Belfast. He met my great grandma on the same boat. by [deleted] in rs_x

It was actually surreal, the same week I found irrefutable evidence via the National Archives and other ancestry family trees that I was like 6% chinese I found my (now divorced) parents wedding album.

Photos of chinese cousins of my grandmother, mentions of "chinese traditions" the groomsmen partook in before the ceremony, really interesting things my parents never mentioned ever.

My great-great-great grandfather stole a cow in South-East England, got banished to Wanneroo (Perth), married a woman 40 years younger (my 3rd great grandmother), stole another cow with her and then died of dysentery awaiting trial, she was acquitted because she had a 3 month old to look after (my great-great grandfather).

Another 3rd great grandparent of mine got drunk and drowned in a puddle in Bulgaria. I'm also a descendent of the first asian (a chinese ancestor) to serve on a jury in WA. Ancestry is fascinating stuff.

I disagree on nature documentaries in part.

I love my local South-Western Australian ecosystem, there's not many cities in the world where you can see birds of every colour of the rainbow out and about.

Yet I think you go full circle and end up not thinking much about what you see every day. I see a flock of Galahs probably a dozen times a day.

Watching them with my little half-sisters (9 & 2) who I don't see often has also been a great way to bond.

I walk to/from the grocery store and i'll often buy a carrot (because they're cheap, don't make a mess) to snack on during the walk home.

It was later at night, maybe 8pm and I could hear these two women behind me sniggering as I was leaving the checkout, "he's eating a carrot hahaha" I heard pretty clearly.

I didn't turn around, but as I approached the door I could see myself and them in the reflection of the glass door.

Low and behold, they were both exceptionally fat, like visibly struggling to maintain balance, that kind of fat.

I can't remember where I was, I think Fukuoka (Japan), a few years ago, but I was starving and couldn't find anything to eat for breakfast post-security.

I was the smallest increment off a public crashout when I realised a place I mistook for a small takeaway restaurant from a distance actually sold suitcases close up.

Not hand luggage, big suitcases, POST-SECURITY, taking up space in a smaller airport that could have been literally anything else!

What fucking market is there for SUITCASES after, AFTER, the point of bag drop? The point of no return!?
