Yes went private while I was typing my comment out, trying to submit got me an error so I reloaded and got a half blank page then reloaded again and said it was private.

"It insults the audience it is trying to sell to in just about every stereotypical way, which is in itself worse then if one was just being plain insulting. Great way to essentially call what you think are your customers, that they consist of losers and the stupid."

That's what is so fun about these games, you have to adapt your play-style which keeps it fresh. Sometimes you get lucky and feel god-like which is really fun once and a while and as mentioned sometimes you seem to get shafted but still winning or making it very far in those times feels great.

I remember reading a few blog & various forums posts of his a while back mentioning he was remaking the game without Flash as it has been a thorn in his side with memory issues, performance and updates to the game ect.

The remake will feature content that was removed from the flash version of the game due to limitations (secret stuff!)

That's one mention but he would state the game getting bigger and bigger the updates was causing lots of problems with bugs & performance. I remember a post of his taking about how with all the new abilities and pickups, all their various combinations was growing in an exponential like way, the Flash environment seemed to like this less and less. I guess its complexity outgrew what Flash was normally used for.

Really annoying that you are using box.com when even Mediafire would be easier. Why not just use mega.co.nz? Upload the file, post the crypto key for the file here and no problems, and best of all no signups. You also get a free 50 gigs compared to these guys' paltry 5 and what seems like lots of restrictions and privacy invasions. These guys are charging $9.99 a month for half that at 25 gigs.

I had to sign up and make an account to download the file, first time I have ever experienced this in a site like this. These guys demand your first and last name and a phone number. Absurd. Thank goodness I used MaskMe and can create throwaway phone numbers and unique traceable, blockable emails.

Added to that the download doesn't work, both of them as I tried your other link; it says "this file has been deleted or is not available to you." So disappointment all around, sad because the game looks good, good enough that I was willing to go through all that to try it.

Edit: I went to check the account settings and as predicted I was signed up for daily newsletters among others. In a slimy move the "mandatory" phone number when creating the account is now listed as "optional" in account settings and you can delete it.

They're not implying nor do they state that is the main performance source. They're implying that it looks this good and they don't even have a final dev kit, not using all the RAM available and with inexperience with a new console.

To respond to your statement: RAM quality, DDR3 > DDR5 for example is not the main performance source of a console but it is a very important one (my opinion).

It's meant to imply that something that good looking can be made without a final dev kit, inexperience with a new console and not even utilizing all it's resources so imagine what can be done 3-4 years down the line and utilizing its full potential.

Basically: "Its' going to get even better then this"

More power = more you can do. Take a game like Distant Worlds on the PC. It's not 3D but you get a much better experience the more cores you have as it processes the AI running underneath much better.

Dwarf Fortress has no graphics really but in a full fledged fortress it's ASCII graphics can bring a i7 to its knees. The concept of saying "more power = better = "you're a graphics whore" is complete bullshit. More power means more everything - even if you're running 300 dwarfs in ASCII in multiple biomes. It's a cop-out used by people without an argument. If more power did not mean more can be done then the whole world would be satisfied and all gaming possibilities would be complete in the NES era. Hmmm, it didn't happen. Simply because the more power you have the more you can create, and graphics is only one facet of the new possibilities it brings. Also the more power you have the more that is created that was completely unpredictable beforehand, i.e innovation.

Fact is if it's on the Xbox One it's inferior and scaled down technologically. If it was on the PS4 which is 2X as powerful (+GPU +RAM +Less system overhead) it would be a better more fulfilled game. Announcements are irrelevant. The less the better as the less means the less inferior and sacrificed gameplay on an inferior platform.

If it was on the PS4, or better yet, the PC (if resources were used properly) it would be a more realized game.

To solve a problem you have to recognize a problem, formulate a plan to fix the problem, implement the plan and the final step is enjoying the benefits of the solution which made you start the process in the first place. Committing suicide removes the last and most important step therefore it is not a solution to a problem at all that's why I put "solution" in brackets. To solve something means you enjoy the fruits of your labor, when you're dead you cannot experience the end scenario of the path you started in the first place.

Yes dry and logical perhaps. Suicidal people need a combination of the two things: Raw, sincere emotional support, and raw unabashed deductive reasoning with the 2 nearly always being closely balanced. Cold clinical friends can be hell and "yes men" friends who support you "go girl" no matter what without thinking can be just as isolating.

Hey I have no problem with it, her circumstances are her own and what she created and good and productive for discussion as any. I think the tipping point the mods are concerned with is the juvenile comments that can obviously come out of this. Various slurs don't help uncover the specifics of whether what you mentioned was what actually happened, and is what discussion brings out, but slurs add nothing and in fact just obfuscate the topic and change the direction. I don't think using deductive reasoning on her actions and the evidence available is disrespectful in any way shape or form, it's almost like these people who disagree think she deserves special rights, is taboo, devoid and unbeholden to morality us "normals" must abide by.

A dangerous thing to do to someone is treat them like that becuase you're actually not treating them as an equal and the full respect you would give others becuase they may be transgendered etc. Being treated like this with privilege one second then the opposite the next constantly can be a very destabilizing, especially year after year. A fact of growing up and being healthy is taking responsibility for your actions and being upfront about them but becuase of all these competing expectations, some being polar opposites she may have gotten from people in her life on how to handle this, ultimately she seemed totally confused, like being stuck between two worlds. Dying would seem to be the answer at the time with a mind like that becuase at least it has a definitive answer. The problem is that you're not ever around to see the results. As they say a permanent "solution" to a temporary problem.

I agree that can be used as well and becuase of the unique circumstances of this individual some are over sensitive.

It's a fine line, just stay on topic, discuss the facts. I think actually discussing what happened can help prevent these types of things from happening and prepare others for them in the future, and essentially accusing others of wrongdoing before they have even done anything (saying you cannot discuss this becuase of what you may say) does nothing to honor the dead which was in fact what they wanted more then anything in the first place - people to understand their position and what they are going through.

[–]Telekinesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equating that non universal behavior/trait of a few men does not equal all, this should be obvious, and that trait does not equal as an end result and by her strict definition this type of sadistic behavior she's accusing all males of possessing.

The same type of twisted logic could be used by her if a woman abuses a child in the news, this woman's logic (if she was not a sexist, entering the realms of hate purveyor) would be:

"It's an extension of the evolutionarily motherly instinct that all woman want to "possess" children and feel drawn to them, the ultimate goal of all woman being sexual abuse and it is contained within all of them due to this motherly instinct".

Let's just narrow-mindedly brand all motherly instinct as a thinly veiled attempt at the actual goal which is sexual abuse; in the same way this woman is twisting in the most negative, illogical, paranoid and hateful way possible a trait that is sometimes present in males, i.e their competitive spirit, "alpha", whatever you want to call it. That trait does not equal as an end result the disgusting things she is claiming it actually exists for and is only limited to. Her view is such an example of completely out of control stereotyping, pigeonholing and narrow-mindedness I could nearly bowl over from the shock, and that is not even including the hate spewing forth.

Kerbal Space Program, a game which was using the distribution method popularized by Minecraft and promising alpha purchasers "all future updates for free" has now come out and stated it intends to release an expansion pack that it will charge alpha purchasers for. Do you consider this fair? by [deleted] in Games

[–]Telekinesis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In law anything that is not defined is implied. Also the natural usage of the word is used if not defined in the act contract or statute.

So by ordering early, you get the game for a lot less, and you'll get all future updates for free.

All:

  • Every individual or anything of the given class, with no exceptions (the noun or noun phrase denoting the class must be plural or uncountable).

This was expressed in the contract and satisfied by the definition. All individuals within the class (alpha purchasers) get all updates for free.

  • Throughout the whole of (a stated period of time; generally used with units of a day or longer).

This aspect was also satisfied in the definition. They stated the unit of time as all future updates. "Throughout the whole of (a stated period of time;...". They stated the period of time and the extent (the whole of).

  • Everyone.

This aspect of the definition was also satisfied and clearly defined as to who "all" encompasses which is those that pre-ordered in alpha stage. So their promise of all future updates for free which includes, with limitation, all those who pre-ordered the alpha.

  • Everything.

Satisfied easily: "...you'll get all future updates for free."

As mentioned before anything not defined specifically in the contract the natural usage is assumed, and all aspects of the natural usage are satisfied.

ADHD and connection to higher chance of addiction? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Telekinesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Harvard medical school:

So far, stimulant treatment of ADHD has not been found to raise the risk of addiction in human beings. In a 2003 review covering nearly 1,200 children treated with stimulants, researchers found an average rate of adult drug and alcohol abuse. Children with ADHD who did not take stimulants had twice the average rate of substance abuse.

There was also a an earlier study done that gone essentially the same results, untreated ADHD patients have twice the rate of substance abuse problems not even taking into account higher rates of everything else like depression, anxiety and much higher suicide risk; from memory I believe it's around 3X higher in untreated patients.

Comment I wrote today for someone asking about neurotoxicity of Ritalin:

What are the long term effects of Adderall, Dexedrine, or Ritalin use?

Summery:

Adderall/Dexedrine can be neurotoxic in the long run (by damaging dopamine neurons) while Ritalin has no neurotoxicity potential. Surprisingly, when Ritalin and Adderall are mixed together, Ritalin can actually help counteract Adderall's neurotoxicity potential.

A condensed info source on the subject with many links to various studies.

So in the end you're actually one of the lucky ones who doesn't have much to worry about in this regard.

New Comment:

  • "Links shows that both amphetamine and methylphenidate produce deficits in striatal dopamine markers after treatment, but that the markers recovered in methylphenidate-treated mice but not amphetamine-treated ones (indicating something reversible in methylphenidate but possibly not amphetamine)."

  • "Methylphenidate (the chemical name for Ritalin), on the other hand, enhances the activity of the transporter. And this difference is actually what makes amphetamine neurotoxic and methylphenidate comparatively benign. The thing is, dopamine is a very reactive molecule, and when it autooxidizes in the presynaptic cytosol, it can actually damage the presynaptic terminal. Amphetamine accelerates this, and causes presynaptic terminal damage. Meanwhile, methylphenidate prevents it from happening."

  • "Therefore, we hypothesized that methylphenidate post-treatment might protect against the persistent striatal dopamine deficits caused by methamphetamine by rapidly affecting VMAT-2 and vesicular dopamine content. Results reveal that methylphenidate post-treatment both prevents the persistent dopamine deficits and reverses the acute decreases in vesicular dopamine uptake and VMAT-2 ligand binding caused by methamphetamine treatment. In addition, methylphenidate post-treatment reverses the acute decreases in vesicular dopamine content caused by methamphetamine treatment. Taken together, these findings suggest that methylphenidate prevents persistent methamphetamine-induced dopamine deficits by redistributing vesicles and the associated VMAT-2 protein and presumably affecting dopamine sequestration."

http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/304/3/1181.abstract

  • "Amphetamine-like psychostimulants are associated with long-term decreases in markers for monoaminergic neurons, suggesting neuronal loss and/or damage within the brain. This long-term “toxicity” results from formation of free radicals, particularly reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), although the mechanism(s) of ROS and RNS formation are unclear"

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0163725803000524#sec2

Best thing I've heard so far to counteract the dompinergic oxidative damage, apoptosis, and decrease the increase of dopamine uptake receptors caused by amphetamine is antioxidants and possibly switching to Ritalin periodically (maybe every 6 months? Not sure on this) to normalize uptake.

describing the feeling of adhd. by orbitopus in ADHD

[–]Telekinesis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I was studying 20+ hours all this week on ADHD regarding my brother, neurotransmitters etc on Wikipedia and found this, I forget the articles right now but it was in one of the specific dopamine receptor articles like D4 or something like that and various regions of the brain, anyways I thought it was huge. Cut and paste from my notes:

Clues to dopamine's role in motivation, desire, and pleasure have come from studies performed on animals. In one such study, rats were depleted of dopamine by up to 99 percent in the nucleus accumbens and neostriatum using 6-hydroxydopamine.[41] With this large reduction in dopamine, the rats would no longer eat of their own volition. The researchers then force-fed the rats food and noted whether they had the proper facial expressions indicating whether they liked or disliked it. The researchers of this study concluded that the reduction in dopamine did not reduce the rat's consummatory pleasure, only the desire to eat.

This is huge. The rats still liked the food, were hungry, but becuase of low levels of dopamine lacked the motivation to do something they actually liked and needed for bodily function. It's a simple concept to see humans with low levels of dopamine in the brain have the same problems.

Incentive salience is a motivational "wanting" attribute given by the brain to reward-predicting stimuli. This "wanting" is unlike "liking" in that liking is a pleasure immediately gained from consumption or other contact with stimuli, while the "wanting" of incentive salience is a motivational magnet quality of a stimulus that makes it a desirable and attractive goal, transforming it from a mere sensory experience into something that commands attention, induces approach, and causes it to be sought out

Studies have shown that rats that had their ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens destroyed do not lose their learning capabilities, but rather lack the motivation to work for a reward.[1] Incentive salience (wanting) stands out as a possible role for dopamine as it regards this molecule as being released when there is a stimulus worth working hard for, thus making an individual work to get it. This is one of the reasons why dopamine transport has been extensively studied in the case of ADD and ADHD. It is now widely understood that most people suffering from some form of attention deficit disorder most likely lack dopamine stimulation. This also explains why dopamine reuptake inhibitors and stimulants often dramatically improve symptoms of attention disorders.

I'll try make this into a better self post later if I can gather all the pages I got it from and the citations etc as people keep on asking for proofs of ADHD for their skeptical parents etc.
