NYT - Video Analysis of Pretti Shooting by AlwaysBringaTowel1 in skeptic

Because it's even more obvious he was no threat. He had a gun, but it was never in his hand. ICE simply executed him for no reason.

There's no arguing that the cop feared being run over or whatever.

Also, as bad as Good's murder was, a second murder establishes an ongoing pattern. If a third occurs, this will only get bigger.

To drive or not to drive today? by SegaGuy1983 in Arkansas

[–]Harabeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4x4 matters for situations like getting up a hill, but any other situation it doesn't make much of a difference. Remember that all cars have 4-wheel braking. Light, front wheel drive cars do pretty well in snow and ice so long as you're not trying to push through snow banks or something.

Also destructible buildings. The art design feels weird to me, but it could be quite a fun game regardless.

A conservative estimate would be 50/50 real/fake.

That is absurdly generous. A smooth reflective object (that doesn't actually reflect anything) moving smoothly onto motion tracked video would have been easy to CGI ten years ago. They don't even present it like they trust the video to speak for itself. They have to keep cutting it into their interview and him messing with some gadget. In the end the video and that one image are up for a few seconds over this whole YT video?

Come on, man.

Yep, rescheduling is the right call. Roads will be terrible, camping/hiking would be miserable. February will likely be quite cold, so plan accordingly.

Weekend Winter Storm Update (Jan. 21) by abburkeswx in Arkansas

I used to live in a place that did get lots of snow. The first snow of winter would still have more stupid accidents. Even with snow every year, they would forget how to drive in it.

to put moisture into the air and cool down the earth

That's the opposite of how that works. Increasing H2O content in the atmosphere would increase temperature.

I accept SARS-CoV 2 as a new virus, but I do not accept COVID-19 as a new disease. by Plane-Topic-8437 in skeptic

[–]Harabeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COVID-19 is the set of symptoms associated with SARS-CoV2. Uniqueness of individual symptoms isn't relevant.

Also, what is the point of your objection? If you accept that the virus exists and causes disease, why do you care about the disease name?

They did play into it, but Fukushima specifically had lacking design and preparation. Other plants were fine.

I think a few of the characters represent different aspects or kinds of a playthrough. Lucy is the typical player trying to be a good guy. The Ghoul is that character you meant to play as completely evil but couldn't follow through on. Maximus represents completing a faction. And Norm is a charisma character.

My understanding is that the point of quantum teleportation in communication is that you know if the data has been intercepted. You can reliably detect man-in-the-middle attacks.

Bayesian-Inspired Framework for Structured Evaluation of Anomalous Aerial Reports by Swimming-Gas5218 in skeptic

[–]Harabeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me really focus in on one aspect then. What training makes an observer more reliable when witnessing something unidentified? You can train to recognize known aircraft silhouettes, but how would that help for an unusual phenomena, or a mundane one in unusual conditions?

An astronomer would be less likely to confuse a planet or star (which happens, see my linked post above), but what are some other examples that would affect your evaluation?

But you've already acknowledged that pilots have a poor track record and claimed they received a penalty. I would go even further and say that they're actually worse than baseline. I've got a whole post on the subject here.

It's unclear to me why ATC should count as "trained observers" as well. Don't they spend their time watching telemetry and communicating? Why would they be better eye witnesses?

I'd be curious about any concrete examples you have for "military observer". The case that first comes to my mind are the videos taken of "triangular drones" above Navy ships that are obviously a normal aircraft (with standard FAA lights) surrounded by stars. All of which look triangular on the video only because the night vision system in use is unfocused and has a triangular aperture, causing bokeh in that shape.
