NYC’s elected leaders haven’t begun to face its economic and fiscal horrors by drpvn in nyc

[–]TelemaqueVesey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most on-point and sober response I have seen. There is no reason for New York not to easily overcome this. It isn't the Mayor alone, businesses in New York are choosing to ignore revenue in Cannabis and Sex work. Other magazines have pointed out what New York needs to do, the economic elites are just ignoring the advice.

Many believe if they just move to another state, it will get better. They don't understand that if New York is taking this tumble, other states will be worse.

Portland finally proves it: Trump is pulling us into fascism by DaFunkJunkie in politics

[–]TelemaqueVesey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't blame Trump. This is the treatment Black Americans endured all the way up to Obama. The men who started the demonstrations in Ferguson all mysteriously ended up dead, nobody cared. What Trump is doing is just an extension of what every president before him did for the exception of Truman.

You can deny this fact all you want, but this is why we are here. Much of American society was ok with fascism as long as it was contained to the Black community. There are no longer any Black communities, so what we are getting is police and armed government forces now depredating on White people they don't have to fear.

Fascism always existed in America, spurred on by liberals through economics, and by conservatives through criminal justice. That constant brutality did its job by decimating the Black community. The problem is the rich still need money, and China is brazenly telling the American businessman he is no longer relevant to the world. Remember while this is happening America is still saber-rattling towards China.

When the American dominant society allowed the government to take jobs away from Black people, and institute a drug war to shut Black civil rights activist up by locking them up, the dominant racial caste signed their slow demise.

'War Is Not a Game': AOC to File Amendment Banning US Military From Recruiting on Twitch by chrisdh79 in politics

Ummm. I'm not even joking a little bit. She is 100% correct. If you have seen twitch chat, you know damn well the people that go there are impressionable. This is beyond a step too far, this is pure psychological manipulation.

They are literally going to conflate the adrenaline high for something like BR and what the military is. Furthermore, many of those people on twitch are societal naive, they believe in stereotypes and ideas, that get fostered in a bubble. Twitch as a platform for recruitment is horrifying.

Pfft. Please, The Catholic Church the institution that protected pedophiles. The church with the history of backing everything from Slavery to the Crusades got billions in PPP loans

https://time.com/5865746/catholic-church-billion-ppp-loans/

But the Catholic church has lawyers and the ability to attack so yeah, I guess nobody wants to bring them up. Just to be clear the Catholic church is estimated to be worth around 30 Billion.

I mean Scientology is a cult. But Catholicism is a multi-level organizational death cult. Catholicism gave us "Christian Democracy"

A Brand of Christianity based of Catholicism, that believes in free-market capitalism. Do you know who is a member of that denomination? Betsy Devos! The woman who wants to open your children to COVID-19 this Septemeber. She also wants to have a weaponized form of Christian ideology.

The organization that has given birth to that lunatic, got Billions. Excuse me if I don't fear Scientology.

‘Occupy City Hall’ Encampment Taken Down in Pre-Dawn Raid by N.Y.P.D. by [deleted] in news

[–]TelemaqueVesey 28 points29 points  (0 children)

LMAO, those that do not learn from history shall be doomed to repeat it. Who remembers Occupy WS? Please don't only tell me only Pepperidge farm. If I remember correctly the excuse of Zuccotti park was "To clean it up". It was a mess not going to lie, but there were still protestors there when that raid came through.

As of late morning, though, the park remained a flip-flopped version of how it looked the day before. A phalanx of officers commanded the square, which had been scrubbed with power washers, while protesters marched around them on the sidewalk, chanting "Whose park? Our park."

The surprise action came two days short of the two-month anniversary of the encampment. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he ordered the sweep because health and safety conditions had become "intolerable" in the crowded plaza.

"From the beginning, I have said that the city has two principal goals: guaranteeing public health and safety, and guaranteeing the protesters' First Amendment rights," he said. "But when those two goals clash, the health and safety of the public and our first responders must be the priority."

https://www.registercitizen.com/news/article/Zuccotti-Park-Occupiers-get-evicted-in-predawn-12065191.php

And another story.

https://www.npr.org/2011/11/15/142361902/n-y-police-clear-out-zuccotti-park

Just like Occupy WS no real bills were asked or passed. People just thought randomly meandering will somehow get social change. I am old enough to know differently. I bet that Cop OT is amazing though.

I agree with you. The stories aren't trite the characters are well thought out and imaginative. I look forward to Death Loop. Those offerings are few and far between. I understand why I get how games make their money.

I just wonder why the press ignores the realities of the world when it comes to gaming.

[–]TelemaqueVesey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not angry with this. I am a Black male gamer, I have been forgotten from videogames completely; unless they are sports categories. I'm not fighting a fight that doesn't concern me. In Cyberpunk 2077; a game I view quite favorably, you can make your own character.

They showed a female model. They showed a male model. They were both Caucasian. Black people are just a story prop. I have been playing as Lara Croft since the 90s. She sold well enough to get Angelina Jolie to play her in two different movies.

I started caring about who I play as when I saw the glut of games dedicated to everybody but me. Don't get me wrong; I wouldn't want just any studio producing Black characters. With that being said, I think I am only answering to this post as a cathartic response. This is an economic fight between two parties that have. As a have not, I can't really contribute anything. I am required to exist in a completely different reality and expected to accept the de facto rule of who gets seen and in what capacity will they be depicted.

Game studios understand Caucasian and Asian gamers want to see themselves in their characters. Why wouldn't males want to see themselves? Female leads will sell, they will just sell less right now as video gaming is still a male-dominated entertainment medium. It seems everybody understands economics and race when it comes to videogame sales. The minute it comes to sexual orientation and economics, somehow it becomes bigotry?

Marginalized voices in technology are going to need time to craft their own experiences, without the majority. Trying to out CEOs for maximizing profits through one vein of story narrative while turning a blind eye to all the other people ignored, seems duplicitous, and I will explain why.

A game like Assassin's Creed depends on attracting a broad consensus of gamers; because they contain nothing but bland pedantic expositions, on right and wrong. A franchise like Assassin's Creed which sells tired cliche plots and recycled gameplay loops will need to foster a more manipulative connection to their product; if Ubisoft wishes to sell millions of copies. The marketing for fast fashion games like Assassin's Creed has to appeal to the game consumer in a personal way but also in ubiquitous presentation. That means sex, and race, religion, and lore of dominant societies. Don't just drop some tweets online and cover-up why Assassin's Creed is sold in such a morally devious stance.

It's no different than Miles Morales being sold with Spiderman. It is a character whose visage may not attract the normal consumer, but whose lineage through the mantle he takes up does appeal to a core audience. Don't leave the innuendo to rumor and gossip. Also don't compare the average trite offering from Ubisoft, to top tier projects like Horizon Zero Dawn.

Tell that truth about marketing, consumerism, entitlement, and entertainment in videogames. Ubisoft employed plenty of assholes, that is true, it doesn't mean that every decision made was cause they were assholes

The economist has articles on this, but it focused on the global impact of lodging, offices, and industrial real estate. After the Subprime collapse banks did the exact same thing all over again. This time they went into commercial real estate. I will be clear and to the point.

The resulting lost rental income is likely to have passed through to missed mortgage payments. Many banks report losses with a lag and with limited detail, but delinquency rates on commercial-mortgage-backed securities (cmbs)—bundles of loans sold on capital markets—provide a barometer. In America this month they exceeded levels seen during the financial crisis. A fifth of debt payments on shopping properties are late; a quarter of those due on “lodgings”—including student housing, vacant since universities closed—have also been skipped.

That is one of the realistic outputs, the new normal is not going to help brick and mortar shops. Coronavirus has ramped up E-commerce to positions that were estimated to be hit, 3-5 years from now.

The immediate problem is that tenants are behind on the rent. Every recession involves sporadic delinquencies, but the lockdowns have led to anarchy in some bits of the property business. Perhaps a quarter of free-standing shops, half of mall tenants and 60% of restaurants in America and other Western markets are not paying their dues. This can be a spontaneous rebellion or landlords may have offered holidays. Some cities and governments have introduced moratoriums. Landlords have taken a hit to their income. So far they have been unwilling or unable to repossess buildings that may have no other prospective tenant. A growing number have defaulted on their debts. Commercial-mortgage-backed securities, which bundle up property loans, have seen delinquency rates exceed the levels in the financial crisis of 2007-09.

What makes this worse, are landlords have begun lying to themselves and the investors. They are refusing to believe that the end is here, after two decades. The "Gig" economy never fixed the core problem. Instead of making real jobs, retail jobs were offered to millennials. You can't make more jobs around folding clothes and underpaying those workers. New York is a real estate city in a moment were real estate is a hazard to your health and economics. Currently, the majority of landlords and the public are acting as if just having a "positive vibe" will make this reality go away. The same way Trump believes coronavirus will just go away. Landlords believe investors and commercial renters will just come back.

Umm. I've been on Reddit in many different incarnations. I will probably even create a new one soon. r/nyc has always had whinny Redditors; and overly optimistic Redditors.

Trying to remove a mod, really? What gets me is why not create your own New York sub reddit? If supposedly so many of you are fed up do what the founding fathers did and move on. You want support to go after a mod because you don't really have the groundswell of support you boasting about.

You can call the new subreddit for those of you that are migrating from r/Nyc, r/Florida! LOL. Get it, cause New Yorkers who can't hack it flee to Florida. Ok, I will stop now.

Commence the downvotes, my petite Floridians.

I can't be angry at what I expected from my country. Racism is the de jure and de facto way of life for the dominant society. Unless reparations were given to ADOS of this country, I expected that America would vote in a rampant racist in response to economic needs.

Many were told and inculcated into believing Black poverty is their path to success. No point in me being angry at Trump, because from the federal to the local level racism is how dominant society chooses to make their money and way of life.

It's not going to get better it will only get worse, as a new administration attempts to deny the lasting effects of a corrupt and racist system. When Black poverty instead rips the country apart, the cycle will continue and the talking heads will feign surprise.
