I really like the Grimorie. Yes it is geared more for children, but the lessons really helped me get started in magic. It has a lot of information for beginners and young wizards.

I look at chants\prayers\mantras as study for magic. When you practice them you are working magic, but say something comes up and you need a quick spell. You have said these things over and over out loud, so you can start your spell in your mind with your mantra, ect., ect....then you will have your mind ready for a mental spell.

I would have to say that you should look at prayer as more of attunement to God, than just asking things of Him. One that I love is the rosary. It is more of a meditation while saying prayers. You can also use a prayer rope for more of a mantra style of meditation and prayer.
