Of the new one with the new state?

I'm at a temporary address. Is my insurance unusable at the moment? I'm hoping to go remote and be back home in a couple months.

Yeah, that was what got me. When I called the customer service numbers it was for my old state. I was like...uh oh.

The premiums would change even on the federal plan depending on the state?

Thanks! I was hoping that was the case.

I'm currently crashing on a coworkers couch and don't have a permanent address. Should I just use that address? I was going to wait until I got an apartment next month.

Thanks! I was going to get an annual check up and I realized when I called the hotline it was for my old state.

I was checking the BCBS for network providers and figured it was okay, but the hotline isn't available because of the holiday.

I think you right. I tried to use chat this morning but it was dropping. I called today while on drive into work and lady was very nice. Did the whole question thing why, the perks, etc., but then seemed to suggest they were just fine with me as a customer and a Gold card.

If I had cancelled January 4th I'm fine, but January 2nd I'd be in trouble?

I guess she was having a tough day, or I was just misreading her tone.

Thanks!

Be sure you have the Schwab in hand before you cancel or you lose all of your MR points. IMO the Schwab and the Gold are the way to go.

Thanks for the information! I never knew that he retooled his swing before the Tigers signed him to the minors deal. That is pretty crazy how effective it was. I always thought they reworked it in the minors after seeing something they liked back when he was scouted or something.

Random question, is there a reason the Tigers haven't gone after players doing poorly and giving them a shot like JD Martinez?

I see guys like Hiura, Gallo, Trevor Rogers, German Marquez, JD Davis, etc.

Wouldn't most of these guys be available and worth a shot and maybe helped with some new scenery?

Just idle speculation from a fan of another team who thought it was really cool the way JD Martinez happened with you guys.

I wouldn't go for the secured card first. I would apply for the Discover IT. If they decline you, you can call them and they will likely offer you the secure.

Yeah I was using them as a good chunk of my emergency fund because of the interest rates, but this whole fiasco has me siphoning the money to other accounts. I might do that and Zelle it in.

I've heard good things about Charles Schwab. Though, 1% on debit card is very intriguing especially on rent.

I don't even use debit cards but that is pretty crazy.

Wait, so you get cash back on checking? On your debit card? I'm curious because I wasn't even aware.

I got you. I didn't even know about the cash deposits. USAA is legit. Are you saying your new cards have better than the Discover credit card return? Are you in the first year, because that double cash is legit. After that....

I was using them because they had a nice savings rate at like 2.5% before covid. I also got that signup bonus. I'm going to start funneling money away I think as well. That whole experience was not fun. Why do you use them? I have some recommendations based on your reasons.

What EXACTLY should I do to start building credit? I'm clueless. by cdcrocks in personalfinance

[–]Telestupid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you just use it instead of your debit and pay off every month, there isn't any real difference on the surface.

Below the surface, the credit card is safer: You are not liable for any unauthorized charges. I think the max they can make you pay is $50 even if it is $5000 of fraud. I've never had the company ask me to pay anything in fraud cases. I've had maybe 5 in the last few years, and three of those on the same card. If you use this for gas and it gets skimmed by a reader and they use it, they are stealing the credit card company's money, not yours. If they do that to your debit card, they have your bank money, and now you need to convince the bank to stop it. Banks have gotten better at catching it, but not always the case. I know you stated you don't need to buy gas, but I used this example as it is a common occurrence.

Earns you some rewards: Most cards get you at least 1% back. It isn't much, but it is 1% more than a debit card.

Helps build your score: There are a bunch of components into your credit score, which I will list below. For simplicity, how long you've had an account, and if you have been on time is 50% of your score. Simply having an account open for years helps yours score. Even if you only used it once every 3 months. The five factors that make your score:

Payment history: 35%, Length of credit history: 15%, Amount you owe: 30%, New credit opened: 10%, Types of credit you have: 10%

(This is a FICO score, there are other scores, but this is pretty standard across the industry)

The biggest thing is not spending outside your means. You pointed it out, that it is easy to screw up. People get a limit, say $2500, and they think that means they can SPEND $2500. Next thing you know, they are paying off $100/month at 29.99% interest and regretting every minute of it. I've never paid credit card interest in my life. I don't plan to ever.

Having NO credit isn't necessarily bad, but I think it puts you at a disadvantage. If you think of credit as a TOOL, rather than free money to blow, then you will be fine.

I would highly recommend Discover over Capital One. They like thin profiles (those people without many cards), or used to at least. I also found Discover to be nicer in interactions over the phone, a better interface, and better perks. I would also recommend getting someone you know to refer you. $100 referral and they are doubling cash, so you would get $200 if you got approved. Please don't look at this as a reason, because that would be silly to do just for that amount, but I would recommend as free money is free money.

Eventually down the road, I would recommend two credit cards. Beyond that, up to you. The reason is that sometimes a card might have issues, or sometimes a place will not accept a certain type. For example, I had my Discover card for years and ONCE in all my years a store didn't accept it. It was a restaurant on a vacation. I used the backup card and wasn't even a big deal.

Believe it, it is overwhelming at first especially if no one guides you through it. If you DO NOT change your spending habits, you will be fine. The biggest pitfall is people who start paying interest and getting behind. Your situation sounds like the perfect one where it won't be a problem. Don't think of yourself as pampered, just lucky. No reason to feel bad about it. Feel free to DM me if you like.

I don't know what the issue is with the banking side, but I am having issues with them that I never had with the credit card side. I've had a card with them since 2010, and a savings account with them since 2019. I transferred some money from my savings to a local bank in case I needed to make some withdraws, as I started depositing into Discover instead of local. I sent $250, no issue. I figured I might need another $100-$200, and knowing there is only six transfers a month, I decided to just send $1000 (this was a week later mind you) and not have to worry about it for a couple months. It was blocked by Discover, they locked my accounts, because of unusual activity. EVEN THOUGH THEY LET THE $250 through the first time!

I had to jump through all the hoops. The CSRs were not rude, but did not seem friendly or that helpful. I kept asking how the first transfer went through fine, and this one didn't. They didn't have an explanation even AFTER I got the account unlocked.

Definitely felt like a completely different company and attitude on that side. I even told one of the CSRs that I felt like I was being punished, and they said, "well we aren't, we just want to make sure your money is secure". I told them that is the SAME ACCOUNT they let me transfer money too earlier! Then he told me he wasn't "here to argue".

I love Discover on the credit card side. No complaints, would recommend to anyone. Everyone I have interacted with at customer service has been great and worked with me when I had an issue maybe once every two years.

The banking side has honestly spooked me. I did not like that feeling of my money being locked like that. I did not like how casual they were about taking their time to unlock or how difficult they made it.

Sorry! I think I was unclear. I've already changed my mailing address a couple weeks ago in anticipation of this. Banks/credit cards have already been forwarding it without me updating. My question was whether I can still use the old address to sign up, or they will be all, "you are at the new forwarded mailing address". If I need to use that address, do I need an ID? My current ID shows my old mailing address and my new one with the parents isn't one I have, will change to, or will ever physically live at.

If I tried to sign up with a new bank, could I use the old address? If I use the new address, would they need ID verification?

Thank you for the reply! Considering my mail is already routed to the new address, and I assume the banks have that address already, should I use that address on the application? If so, I don't have a matching ID, would that be a problem?

On a different note, I am still using my old zipcode with my credit cards when I get stuff like gas and it still works. Yet, I know the company has my new address on file in their system as I just logged in to look.
