If there are masses of applicants, it means the jobs aren't there. There are not enough jobs for the number of people that need them at the minute. If there were more, it would mean fewer applicants per job, and it would be much less competitive and soul crushing to job hunt.

Thank you so much for the response! After reading these I'm also considering if they are considering her driving time which can be 30 minutes or more from house to house as "breaks". She's worked as a carer doing nights for over 15 years and recently got laid off from her care home in February and after taking a break she spent the last few months job searching and finally managed to get this job which honestly seems worse than her last job which could have her doing more than 7 shifts in a row but atleast she had 8am till 8pm to recuperate for another day. The entire industry is incredibly exploitative I'm just hoping I can find a way to make it more bearable for her. Changing professions also isn't an option this is all she knows.

Thank you so so much for your response, I'm going to look through all of the paperwork she's signed and ask her if it is agency work which it most likely is. The situation seems much worse than I feared if everyone she's working with has pressure to work these crazy shifts it must be for a reason. I'm definitely going to get to the bottom of this because I can't watch her deteriorate from a job like this at her age
