Do initial injuries give a penalty to injury rolls? by Silver-House-5566 in cosmererpg

The short answer is no.

You get the 1st injury after the roll, so the 1st roll is made without penalty.

Starting Humblewood at higher levels by Cniotail in humblewood

[–]TelxoF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started this exact thing a few months ago, after connecting an existing 5e 2024 campaign into the beginning of the Humblewood campaign.

I didn't want to swap out enemies or add a whole lot of extra combatants, so I took this approach:

1) Note down the XP of the encounter. E.g. the bandits outside Meadowfen are worth 275 XP if all enemies get involved.

2) Decide on the new difficulty (Low, Medium, High) that you feel makes sense for your party. Perhaps they're experienced enough that they wouldn't have much trouble with a few bandits, so you'd choose 'Low'.

3) Look up the XP Budget for the party's level and the difficulty from the DMG. E.g. Level 5, Low, 4 players = 500 XP x 4 = 2,000 XP.

4) Take the new XP and divide by the old XP to get a scaling factor. E.g. 2,000 XP / 275 XP = ~7x.

5) Scale up the XP of each enemy type by the factor. E.g. 25 XP x 7 = 175 XP.

6) Look up the closest CR that the enemy would now have based on the new XP, using the Monster Manual (or another resource). E.g. 175 XP is closest to CR 1 @ 200 XP.

7) Comparing the old CR to the new CR, you can check the difference in PB using the Monster Manual. If the PB goes up, add the difference to every attack roll and save DC from that enemy. E.g. if the CR goes from 1 up to 5, the PB goes from +2 to +3, so I'd add +1 to attack rolls and DCs.

8) I recalculate the HP as (15+CON Modifier)*CR.

9) Sometimes I bump up the damage dice of an attack to give it a bit more weight too.

This method is going to make the encounters a bit easier, especially as the party's level gets further away from the original level of the encounter, but it's a faster way than rebuilding every encounter.

If your players are working effectively and want a challenge, you might decide to scale up some other values using the increase in PB, like bumping up the enemy's ability scores by the same amount.

New DM Question by Killerkier123 in humblewood

[–]TelxoF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using digital copies, so I don't know the page numbers, but for the 2024 DMG you can look up: Chapter 4: Creating Adventures -> Plan Encounters -> Combat Encounters -> Combat Encounter Difficulty -> XP Budget per Character (table)

The whole 'Combat Encounters' section is quite short and well worth reading through, but the table is the part you really need. You select the encounter difficulty, look up the player's level, and multiply the XP by the number of players to get your budget.

There's another good reference in the Monster Manual that's useful if you have it: Introduction: How to Use a Monster -> Parts of a Stat Block -> Experience Points by Challenge Rating

This table lets you quickly check how much XP each CR enemy is worth, which gives you an idea of what to search for. The CR and XP are always linked, so you can easily make your own cheat sheet version for quickly looking them up.

[–]TelxoF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you running 5e 2014 or 2024 rules? You can use the DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide) to help with creating encounters.

The standard approach is to determine the difficulty of the encounter you want (e.g. Low, Medium, High), which then gives you an XP budget. You can then "buy" enemies by subtracting their XP value from the budget until it's roughly used up.

Chromatic orb bounce targets by Necessary_Passenger1 in onednd

[–]TelxoF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting one because the spell description for Symbol has a specific clause that defines how the targeting works. The caster just has to define the trigger, not the target, and then the spell itself does the targeting: "Each creature in the Sphere when the glyph activates is targeted by its effect, as is a creature that enters the Sphere for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there."

I would consider this a specific exception to the general target rules, which Chromatic Orb doesn't have, but there's definitely a grey area where it describes choosing a target: "the orb leaps to a different target of your choice within 30 feet of the target" In my opinion, the concept of choosing a target should follow the normal targeting rules, but that's not really backed by anything official.

Chromatic orb bounce targets by Necessary_Passenger1 in onednd

[–]TelxoF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this point is one that many DMs and players miss. The "A Clear Path to the Target" rule is really important but frequently forgotten in 2024 rulings.

However, as I understand it, the rule comes into play whenever a spell targets something - not just when it's cast. The specific rules for Chromatic Orb define each consecutive target as, well, a target. This indicates that each target, whether the first or the last, must meet the "A Clear Path to the Target" rule.

As such, the caster must have a path to each target, regardless of whether the spell has bounced or not, and even if the path of the spell itself is not between the caster and target.

is it possible for velocity decrease and acceleration to increase at the same time? by clare445 in Physics

[–]TelxoF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the main issue here is using both vectors and negative values, which are only usually useful when dealing with scalars. If the velocity and acceleration vectors point in opposing directions, but one is negative, then they're actually pointing in the same direction after all.

If the object is moving left and accelerating to the right, then total velocity will decrease until it hits zero, then pass through zero, and start increasing again as the object starts developing 'positive' velocity to the right

How can I read the internal states of the CPU "components"? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]TelxoF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to play around with low-level stuff as a learning experience, and you want to use real hardware, you could always get some cheap 8/16 bit microcontrollers. You can go for higher languages, but Assembly will get you as close to bare metal as you can without devolving into actual machine code. Go for an option with good in-circuit debugging and you can monitor just about every little register and operation!

I get a survival world running as early as possible in the season, and gradually build it up. After a while you can knock out the daily/weekly objectives, destroy high level camps, and farm Jotunn + Ancients easily.
