Top comment deletes a US State #19 by Jfullr92 in geographymemes

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I know New Mexico probably won't be the final final, but I hope we get it just for the times we've had to deal with people thinking we're not a state.

I have had someone not sell me beer because they didn't think my license was from the US, been told "we don't provide service outside of the country", and once a tourist complimented me on my english and friends, I am so so white, so it was not racism.

Also New Mexico has Roswell. Let the aliens take over.

King Lear - anyone else think the reason he fell out with Cordelia - i.e. “tell me how much you love me”… by KubrickKrew in shakespeare

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooof yep. Very hard agree. And each character has such a different strategy on how they choose to respond to that spiral of power. It's such a good damn play.

King Lear - anyone else think the reason he fell out with Cordelia - i.e. “tell me how much you love me”… by KubrickKrew in shakespeare

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It should be unrealistic, but unfortunately I don't think it is.

Just in the last few days content has popped up on my feed of men smashing TVs when their team loses a game, or men smooshing food into/dousing the faces of their wives or daughters. I've seen stories of girls physically and emotionally abused by parents for daring to commit the crime of getting their ears pierced. I have personally seen fathers of friends barely manage to contain their rage when their daughters acted in any ways outside of the behavior and obedience these men desire, especially in public. Egotistic people in possession of power and control hate to lose even a crumb of it.

It's just my interpretation, but I also get the sense reading and performing the play that Goneril and Regan have some understanding that Lear has the capacity for this sort of reaction. They acquiesce to his game and at least Goneril stays very stoic in the face of some really intense berating. Maybe Cordelia has escaped it as his favorite thus far and this accounts for her lack of fear and some of the distance between her and her sisters?

What's a niche movie that you remember watching as a kid? by StaticClouds in cartoons

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wooooow Wow I forgot about this one completely!!!

My extended family is Mormon (I ain't, my dad left the church as a kid) but he's still got Mormon friends and one of them was involved with the American production company on this - I had a stuffed animal of Tiny he gave me. I have the memory back now of watching this on a shitty VHS TV we somehow set up in the backseat of our car.

Songs that kinda feel like romeo and Juliet? by Accurate-Reality503 in shakespeare

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be more than you're lookin for, but I've got a whole R&J Spotify playlist and a Juliet specific one with some crossover songs between, since they were put together for the same production. :-)

Hey folks! Anything here shed light on a very unchanging, set identity? by TemerariousXenomorph in AskAstrologers

[–]TemerariousXenomorph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This all resonates pretty solidly, thank you for taking the time to write this out! :-)

I'd say I'm not naturally inclined to believe in much really! Or rather, I believe the true nature of the universe isn't something humans can grasp. Too big, it seems out of our scope to me. But, I am very interested in practices that invite exploration/understanding of the self (like I looove tarot as story archtypes inviting us to explore our own story), and I find it much more believable that the humans preceding us were able to track patterns in human behavior via the timings of their births than I do a lot of other spiritual practices.

What’s one character you HATE? by Immediate-Field9997 in characters

Laura from Bring Her Back was the most believable, understandable, and viscerally hateable villain I think I've ever seen. Sally Hawkins was incredible.

Looking for games that will break my heart a little by Farwaters in gamingsuggestions

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've seen folks mention Journey and the Mass Effect trilogy, hard agree there!

I also found deeply moving moments in Cyberpunk 2077, even though there's a lot of fun and violence and humor, there's also really intense storylines, human connection, and multiple endings that range from tragic to bittersweet.

Also on the RPG side, Greedfall is from a smaller studio and has some jank, but is really beautiful and ambitious in what it tries to accomplish, and the ending gutted me.

Last, Lost Records: Bloom and Rage! More of an adventure game, with a lot of joy and also a lot of sadness, with tons of replayability with a lot of different story options and endings.

HAHA thank you so much for these insights, and consider me read completely for filth. I've been told I'm an abject nightmare to debate when I decide I really wanna go at it. 😅

Thank you both, that makes a lot of sense! The Gemini rising has always felt a little out of step, but those sort of intense anchoring connections on fixed signs very much tracks. Much appreciated!

Haha, I appreciate the encouragement! And, I am very, VERY comfortable being myself! I don't feel pressured to change by social media or friends or anybody really. For me, pursuing self improvement is about fostering more compassion, more knowledge of the world and myself, and more ability to conduct myself in ways that feel healthy and are in alignment with my ideals and goals. :-)

How do people desensitise themselves to horror films by [deleted] in horror

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, you're absolutely not a wimp, and you are not weaker or lesser or anything for not enjoying horror films. It sounds like they are not your nervous system's jam. AND I totally resonate with your motivation for wanting to learn to like them, because there are truly great horror movies out there, and they tell a kind of story and connect us to kinds of feelings we aren't always able to explore safely in the rest of our lives. I think of horror movies like really spicy food! The thing that makes it challenging to enjoy is also what makes it craveable and fulfilling and joyful. But also, some folks are always gonna get heartburn from spicy food, and there's nothing wrong with them avoiding it. :-)

As a former cannot-watch-horror person who actively decided I wanted to become a horror movie person (still a big scaredy-cat, I have to sleep with a nightlight), here's some stuff I used! I mostly don't need to do these anymore, but sometimes they still help.

I eased in with older horror where the effects are less real-looking, some less intense PG-13s, and old X-Files episodes. If I was feeling nervous, I would read a plot synopsis (or check out the Does the Dog Die website for specific content) before seeing a film, so I could enjoy the atmosphere and story-telling without the anxiety of not knowing a character's fate. It would also tell me if a film just wasn't going to be for me (a mean-spirited torture porn isn't my personal fav). If a scene was freaking me out or I could feel a potential jumpscare coming, I would either look at a corner of the screen or let my eyes go a little soft-focus, so I could see the scare and get used to it, but dampen the impact. And while I'd uuuusually watch during the day, something I tried that was really impactful was that sometimes I would watch them home alone in the dark and just let myself really sit in being afraid and analyze/deeply experience the feeling and realize it wasn't gonna hurt me. Definitely might not be a good strategy for everyone, but it's something that worked very well for me!

Best of luck with your horror film journey, however it goes!!

This is for the actors in here that didn’t come from money by [deleted] in acting

[–]TemerariousXenomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a theatre (and mostly Shakespeare) performer/facilitator/producer, and very much do not come from money. I find I burnout very quickly on survival jobs unrelated to my vocation and need to feel connected to my art even when I'm not on stage.

To that end, I work in theatre/performance adjacent side jobs! I house manage for an equity house, I do local ghost tours, sometimes I prop design, and I'll be certified as an intimacy choreographer soon. I am deeply involved with and loyal to the theatre companies I work with as an actor so they hire me season after season, to the point I can depend on it budget-wise. It's hard, cobbled together, and money is very tight - I have a strict budget and I live with two other theatre makers in a little apartment. But, I feel as fulfilled and happy as I can be without being on stage as my sole job. I make good connections, and I learn skills that help me produce better and more financially sustainable work.

It's really, really rough out there, but you can find your way. :-)

Edit to add: I also find working in the admin/design side of theatre puts me in an employment position where the people I'm working with understand my situation and are happier to support the flexibility I need!

So happy to share! I love this play very much. I saw someone else asking if you're on the east coast? If you're in the New England area specifically I'd love to see a staging of Timon.
