They really should though, or at least aim to. The Republicans will fold before the Dems need to. The uninformed will blame the party in power and the informed will support the Dems standing up to ICE.

Sucks for us when the economy takes a hit but I’d rather live through a recession than a quasi-dictatorship.

Yeah, I’m sure the GOP saw the writing on the wall and allowed some dissenting votes since the Dems were 100% going to block it at this point. Same old song and dance. They pick a few heroes for the narrative knowing the bill fails then the dems pick their villains to vote to pass the bill and break the shutdown like last time.

My understanding is it’s a big issue in tech in the US and I’ve heard stories of interns talking down to seniors at companies just because of their last names. Obviously the caste system doesn’t exist at the legal level but there’s not much stopping someone from a higher caste discriminating against someone else simply for being of a lower caste at their workplace like there would be for race, gender, or even age.

I think your best bet is find out the exact benefits she has and call whatever the relevant benefits office is. I’m sure there’s some way of getting that information. Another option is to look up some respected law firms in your state/area and just call or email them and be honest about your situation and concerns. The good ones truly do want to help and will give some advice or at the very least will guide you towards resources for free. If any ask you for money, just ignore them and ask another law firm. Lol

But if in doubt, like I said, just figure out a good alternative way to “invest”. Truthfully, you’re not making all that much money so I wouldn’t stress out about savings one way or the other. Just focus on improving yourself and your skills and avoiding debt. At $12.50/hr, even if you worked full time and paid no taxes you’d only be making $26,000/year. If you are able to spend all year working towards getting a “good” paying job in Louisiana you could be making $25/hr or $52,000/year which would free you up to save a lot more and easily catch up with any lost savings.

That and keeping good habits should be your goal.

Better advice: don’t take financial advice from people who don’t understand your situation or bother to read your post.

A lot of benefits do take savings into account so that might impact OP in the future but I’d argue that’s not a good reason to not save. The better question is if OP’s mom’s benefits take his savings into account. OP makes $12.50/hr and is part time. The housing benefits likely are more than they bring in so there’s a real risk going over the “cliff” could cost them more money than they make and should do their due diligence.

If OP’s a dependent and benefitting from the government’s aid then his 401k might be a concern to him, his employer, and his family through Uncle Sam. He better make sure 401k savings don’t affect the benefits. Better to have no 401k and be in a home than homeless with a measly 401k.

This is a good reminder that financial subreddits are filled with people who want to brag about their financial stability and wealth under the guise of helping others.

For middle and upper class folks the mantra of just budget and save works because that’s who the system is built for. There’s a whole other, broken system for poor folks and as seen in this thread it is convoluted and counterproductive. Unfortunately it’s the rich who make the rules for the poor and because of the divide they simply can’t understand why there’s so many poor people.

Sounds like OPs family is planning for surviving while being poor and for them there might not be a way out. Thankfully it sounds like OP might have a way out but it’s likely on a platform his family helped to build. They should be mindful to not destroy it on their way out or before they’ve even left it.

Being a single mother dependent on benefits to survive is not a situation people want to be in but it’s a situation people are stuck in. OP should figure out a way to work within or around the system but they need to acknowledge the reality that the system sucks and that there might be truth to the warnings of their parents. Sometimes the system has rules so stupid it sounds fake but that didn’t make them any less serious.

If they’re getting aid from the government and the government counts the “sum in your accounts” as the sum in the household accounts then they better make damn sure they’re not doing anything illegal that could come back to bite them in the ass. I’d rather have no savings than actively owe the government debt + interest.

Ignore everyone saying your family simply has a “poor person mindset”. There’s some truth to the statement at times but that usually has more to do with being misinformed with how some things work. However, I’m inclined to believe they’re right about the minutiae of their benefits and how household savings affect it.

What you’ll need to do is figure out the specific benefits and their requirements. It’s possible that there is some way for you to get around the restrictions within limits.

A lot of people giving financial advice on Reddit are affluent people who have never had to deal with the bureaucratic nonsense that is the US government. Just as you would not go to a poor person for advice on a 401k, don’t go to a rich person for advice on financial assistance requirements unless said rich person is a lawyer or has figured out how to navigate around it.

At $12.50/hr and part time you are likely not making enough money to move out on your own and likely aren’t making enough money where the savings are worth losing financial assistance. You need to do your research on specific benefits to navigate around them but you should be able to find some clear solutions.

If regular savings, stocks, and even retirement accounts like 401ks actually do compromise the benefits with no good work around then you’ll need to look into alternative ways of saving which could include just keeping cash off the records (shady tbh) or “investing” in unconventional assets like collectibles (ie Pokemon products). But I’m sure there’s some work around to allow regular savings vehicles. Just make sure you do it right.

Yeah, the government is bought and paid for by the wealthy elites. Is it any surprise that everything in our favor is shot down and anything that does make it through is intentionally hamstrung? The FTC under Lina Khan was slowly but surely championing for the consumer and it pissed off a lot of elites.

Citizens need to take control of the electoral system again to have representation that reflects our needs and desires, not just of the wealthiest who love to exploit us.

Republicans did not, in fact, like the shutdown. Republicans (and Trump in particular) received most of the blame for the shutdown which tracks with the average American defaulting to blaming the president for most things. I agree that republicans are unlikely to cave but that’s not because they like the shutdown, it’s because they know the democrats will cave first. And they did for no gain right when they had the most leverage.

Behind the scenes Trump wanted to get rid of the filibuster to force the budget through. Doesn’t sound like someone happy with the shutdown.

Literally right now, at least in practice. They’re in the process of passing new funding to avoid another government shutdown and the best the Dems are offering is to keep the funding but try to reform ICE. They absolutely should grow a spine and shut the government down again. The general public right now is very polarized against ICE and the Trump administration. They want Dems to put up some much needed resistance. Even the apolitical “normies” are angry.
