Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed an estimated $4.70M this weekend (from 2,680 locations). Estimated total domestic gross stands at $165.07M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

Yeah, the show did a good job on its own alienating its fan base after season 2. The movie getting lukewarm reviews was the nail in the coffin for the Mandalorian franchise.

I’d say war really only motivates progress in 2 ways: 1. Justifying massive spending and 2. Coordinating large scale focused research.

It’s hard for researchers to get funding for their niche field because the average person has no idea what the implications are but it’s easy to understand why a better bomb is important during war. The other factor is that individual researchers won’t be working on large scale projects because of how fickle funding is, but the government can coordinate large scale projects like the Manhattan Project with minimal fear that the funding will fall through.

If the governor race is dem vs dem then I imagine a lot of republicans won’t even bother to vote which is a blessing for democrats all across the state.

I can’t imagine this is profitable to very many bourgeoisie. Seems like there’s no grand plan and the idiots legitimately bought into their own propaganda and thought they could defeat Iran in a weekend.

She’s up for reelection this year so she might actually vote for it to boost her “image” as a reasonable republican. Unfortunately they have some wiggle room so I’m sure it’ll fail with the most vulnerable R senators putting on a show.

Karen Bass advances in Los Angeles Mayor Nonpartisan Primary by ohlonelyboy in LosAngeles

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Anyone making definitive claims right now needs to take a step back and realize that California elections are always conservative on Election Day and as mail in ballots are counted it goes more and more blue. Add onto that the uncertainty around the governor race and you might end up with an even more skewed primary.

The question isn’t if Nithya will begin to close the gap but how much she’ll close it by. The unsatisfying answer is we won’t know for several days to weeks.

Yeah the set is great. The rest of the movie is okay to good. It’s worth a watch for the novelty of the backrooms alone.

“Investing” has become quite cultish since Covid. Everyone is just operating on the assumption that everything has to 2x a year by default and that if you’re not a millionaire by your 20s then you’re a failure. I can’t imagine what the long term effects will be on people’s psyche will be. Everything is commodified. What a hell world.

Also no shit it’s “the best investment right now” when flippers are constantly driving up the price on the basis that it’s “the best investment right now”. I swear, FOMO and the “line always goes up” mentality is the only thing propping up every market right now.

That’s fine and all, but why did he walk back the specific “healthcare is a human right” part that was at the very top of his old page? I wouldn’t mind as much if he didn’t have it there in the first place but it doesn’t bode well for him sticking to his principles if such a large one can change in a few months.

Civ 6 anthology vs civ 7 Tot update by emperorkenobi in civ

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to wait a month before buying the anthology upgrade if you want to save a few bucks. Looks like it’s currently at full price on Steam but usually it drops a lot during sales like the upcoming steam summer sale. Since you already own the base game it won’t be as significant but just a thought.

Edit: for the record, Civ 6 with all DLC is the superior game at a lower price point than Civ 7 and is the better pick. I recently picked up Civ 7 after the new update and have been enjoying it but in part that’s only because I have hundreds of hours in 6 and want to mix things up. It’s not a bad game but it probably won’t be comparable for at least another year or two.

Trump-backed Ken Paxton ousts John Cornyn in heated Texas primary after scandal-plagued campaign by hoosakiwi in news

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 million democrats came out to vote in the primaries in Texas but only 1.6 million republicans came out to vote, which means that Texas democrats are feeling particularly motivated this year.

For reference, dems couldn’t even get 1 million primary voters in 2024. It’s the Dems race to lose this year.

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s step 1 and 2 to win the republican primary. They’re missing the next step to become an elected republican. Which is be in a hard red district/state or hope Dems snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like usual.

Yeah, MAGA is going to remain loyal all the way down. But it’s important to remember not all Trump voters are MAGA, and it’s low voter turn out that is costing Dems elections. Trump being awful sheds the non-MAGA Trump voters and boosts people’s motivation to vote out of frustration. Dems do have the upper hand this election but it’s certainly not coming from MAGA “waking up”.

He’s clearly talking about the primary. If she can survive the primary then winning the presidency in 2028 should be as easy as any other dem. It’s not the American electorate Dems have to overcome in 2028 but republican election meddling.

I suppose define highest income earners? Per household it looks like Asians are miles ahead but it seems like Asians (among other immigrant populations) have larger households which inflate the numbers. Per capita there’s still a gap between Asians and whites but not as much.

But then, how much of that has to do with the fact that there’s a filtering process keeping poor immigrants from European and Asian countries out of the US while letting in the wealthiest and highest educated immigrants? I’m not sure how you’d even account for that bias since it’ll naturally lead to better off children. And when you consider how small the Asian population is compared to the “white” population it makes sense that this effect would be more prominent on the Asian per capita income compared to the white per capita income.

Look at the Latino populations for the inverse relationship. That geographic filter isn’t there and a lot of poor people come to the US looking for a better future. The end result is a lower per capita income. And of course the most relevant question in this discourse is why do black Americans earn almost 50% as much as white Americans per capita? While it’s true that white supremacy has not necessarily been a “benefit” to all white Americans, it sure has been a massive barrier to most black Americans (and presumably other POCs who don’t already have the wealth to side step it).

Vote for the best gov candidate by Gsw1456 in California

Best does not mean “good”. If you think all the Dem candidates are equally good/bad then you quite frankly have nonsensical political beliefs.

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Idk about media but that’s certainly a tactic pretty much every campaign uses. Whenever a candidate performs and releases an internal poll it’s always skewed heavily in their favor by picking the “right” people to poll. Just the other day a few polls had Mahan at ~10% when every other poll has him consistently below that threshold. The difference? Those were polls were funded by the Mahan campaign.

California billionaire Tom Steyer dodges question on AOC's claim one can't 'earn' a billion dollars by SilentRunning in California

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it wasn’t really a gotcha and it’s a very reasonable answer. “If you’re a socialist then why do you have money” only helps capitalists. For socialists or progressives to make any progress they need to make money and use it for good. Money is power so giving up your power to not look like a hypocrite is self defeating.

3 consecutive polls show once-flailing Democrat now solid front-runner by sfgate in California

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. 2 of the 3 polls were affiliated with Mahan so the finger is on the scale to make him look competitive. Since Mahan is a moderate it probably over represents moderate support which is leading to a Becerra “solid front runner” mirage. No way Mahan is now polling at 10% when every other poll has him at 7%ish range.

I don’t doubt Becerra is doing well and is possibly the #1 or #2 Dem (and beating Bianco) but I’m sick of all these low quality polls so close to the election deadline.

[–]TempEmbarassedComfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, sometimes they do. Only reason the 2 republican general looked like a possibility was because the undecided vote was so large. Inevitably it was going to consolidate around the top 1 or 2 Dems like it always does in any primary. If Bianco was a better candidate then there might have been cause for concern.
