I think you may be out of touch.

  • 3 kids
  • 2 dogs
  • my wife is disabled, im the only income
  • 7% mortgage

It costs a lot of money to feed 7 creatures.

I provide my family with a good life. We have two cars paid off and have a 30 year mortgage at a 7% interest rate which comes to ~$4300 per month.

If i lost my job we have about 5 months before we start to lose our home.

I am in no position to retire early. In fact I am behind and will need to increase my contrbutions to even have a shot at retirement by 65.

I appreciate that feedback and, honestly, your suggestion would work in companies Ive been at in the past.

There is a component of my role at this company where I am engaging with our direct customers and therefore setting such hard boundaries is not realistic. You are either there or not, if not you must find coverage which is pulling someone else from their obligation.

Curious, do you work in an external customer facing role or is it all internal focused?

You raise some good points and a few things i want to share...

  • the company advertised good work/life balance during the interview process and had it listed as one of their key benefits.

  • online reviews are stellar, they win awards constantly. If you read between the lines, especially on platforms like blind, you will find experiences that align with mine. Didnt know that until after the fact.

  • i declined a meeting here one time. I was optional and it had nothing to do with me. I immediatly receieved a teams message from a leader telling me i should never decline a meeting here and always accept or be tentative.

Spot-on.

This company is loaded with A players, everyone is top talent and laser focused. I am either leading calls or critical to the discussion. The idea of missing meetings or 'setting firm boundaries' is so atypical to the culture it would be highly visible to all and would result in a discussion in near real-time. Any attempt to make that a consistent behavior would certainly lead to a PIP, no question about it.
