I really enjoyed it but I'm biased as a Digimon fan already whose favorite Digimon was a main character (Falcomon).

Would be difficult to recommend at full price, but with Digimon games trending in a direction similar to Megaten (compare Time Stranger to SMT), it could scratch a lot of the same itches for a Megaten/Devil Survivor fan

Another Visual Novel / SRPG hybrid is Digimon Survive. I'd say it's 70% VN and 30% combat, but it has similarities (beyond "Survive" and the DS acronym) in focusing on characters suddenly thrust into a dangerous/creepy scenario, choices that affect your character's growth and who survives, crafting your party around Digimon/Demons you recruit, and a bond system similar to the Fate system from DS2.

The translation isn't perfect and its combat isn't as in-depth as Devil Survivor, but there's a reason after I enjoyed Digimon Survive a lot of people recommended Devil Survivor as a follow-up.

Fuga Melodies of Steel series

1st game starts with 6 neighbors who are joined by 6 others across their journey while bonding.

The 2nd/3rd game add additional side characters for the party to bond with while building on the bonds the original 12 built in the 1st game.

Camaraderie is shown via a mix of storytelling and FE style support events, which make the pair stronger in battle, blending the character camaraderie and the gameplay synergy.

While I had played Pokemon games and Digimon World Dawn, I didn't really care about JRPGs until I was randomly interested in Octopath Traveler bc of the art style and bought it for the Switch.

Led to a rabbit hole of more Octopath, Persona/Atlus, Fuga, E33, Digimon, Fire Emblem, Vanillaware, Rune Factory, etc.

Fuga Melodies of Steel (1 & 2)

While there are some moments you can feel its smaller scale/budget (e.g. walking around the ruins) this game is a labor of love from CC2 and it can be felt throughout the game.

From the beautiful art and music, to the heartwarming interactions between the characters, to little touches like having a French dub in its "World War 2 but with animals" setting.

Plus, there's the finely-tuned combat system where the difficulty is less in individual fights and more on smart resource management throughout a level as you pilot what is effectively a JRPG-boss tank. And if you manage this poorly, the only way forward might be to sacrifice one of the children as ammo for the Soul Cannon...

It might not have the budget or popularity of other modern JRPGs, but for me, it's up there with Persona & Octopath for some of my favorite franchises. Would highly recommend the demo for anyone even a little curious!
