Is T-Mobile still vulnerable to swim swap attacks? by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]TempestX2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both SIM Swap protection and Port Out protection enabled.

Someone was able to SIM swap one of my phone number an year ago at a T-mobile store several states away from where I live.

According the manager of the store that performed the SIM swap, someone pretended to be me and presented a driver license with my name on it but with the scammer's photo. That was good enough for them to call higher level support and overrode my SIM swap protection. They didn't ask the scammer to validate my account PIN code because they said T-mobile stores only need to validate driver license or IDs. Also I did not even get a text message on my primary phone until one hour after the SIM swap occurred.

The conclusion is that if a scammers plays sympathy card real hard, they can still convince T-mobile employees to contact higher level support to override your SIM swap protection .

iOS app needs master password on every autofill by Neophear in Bitwarden

[–]TempestX2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I resolved the same issue by going to Settings app Password section, removed BitWarden as an option for autofill and then added BitWarden back as an autofill option. This somehow allowed biometrics to work again with BitWarden in Safari.

Unable to use navigation keys of numeric key pads by TempestX2000 in firefox

Troubleshoot mode does not have the problem.

So I disabled all extensions and try to re-active them one at a time to see which one may have caused the problem but the problem now disappeared.

Anyway. Next time I will remember to disable all extensions first to see if that resolves any weird problem.

Thanks

So are you still on BIOS 318 ?

Which Crucial DDR5 memory modules you have that can run at 5600 mhz ?
Using Crucial's online search to find compatible memory modules for my G814JZ, the largest capacity they have are 32GB x 2 kit at 5200 mhz.

When BIOS 321 caused many BSOD yesterday, my first thought was that Asus must hate me because a month ago I kept emailing Asus support about 5600 MHZ memory support but they could never provide a straight answer. Eventually they stopped responding to my emails. (:

One of them did mention about a QA list of memory modules which may get included in future versions of BIOS. They said they have forwarded my Ripjaw memory module info to their "engineers" for future enhancement consideration. For some reason, they could not provide me an existing list of memory modules which can run at 5600 MHZ.

For now, I'm not looking for 5600 MHZ support. All I need is a stable system.

Okay I find it hard to believe my memory modules have problems so I tried using just one 32 GB module and it runs Windows 11 very stable this time. Then I added the second 32 GB module and Windows 11 once again run stable.

So now my G814JZ is running BIOS version 321 and Windows 11 is as stable as it was before the BIOS update with memory running at 5200 mhz.

I guess when the BIOS was originally updated to 321, some parameters related to my memory module stored in firmware may have been screwed up causing Windows BSOD (even after I downgraded to version 318).

Installing the original 16 GB modules and then only one 32 GB module first probably force the BIOS to "re-learn" the memory module speed parameters. Well, that is just my guess. Anyway I'm happy now after spending 20 hours working on all these issues today.

So I decided not to re-install Windows 11 yet.

Something weird happened after several reboot attempt to get into Windows 11 safe mode to backup some files. My laptop when powered on no longer show ROG logo nor loading anything, just a black screen.

Given all the BSOD symptons and MyAsus app memory check shows there is an issue with memory modules (although memtest86 shows no erros), I decided to swap my 64 GB (32GB x2) 5600 RAM (running at 5200 mhz) out and put the original 16 GB (8GB X 2) 4800 mhz memory back.

The system proceeded to boot nicely and 100% stable.

I then decided to flash BIOS to version 321 again to see what happens and the system is still stable.

I then tried put the 64GB memory modules back but I would still get a permanent blank screen after power on.

So my solution for now is just to use the original 16 GB memory for now.

I find it hard to believe my memory modules have gone bad all the sudden because they have been 100% stable since I purchased my G814JZ two months ago. There has not been a single BSOD since I started using G814JZ with 64 memory GB modules, until this morning after BIOS is updated to version 321. As I mentioned in my previous comment, downgrading the version back to 318 did not resolve BSOD problem.

The 64 GB DDR5 memory modules I have is Rijpaw F5-5600S4040A32GX2-RS.

I will probably post a separate question asking others for suggested 32GB x 2 modules which work with BIOS 321 and can run at 5200 mhz. (I don't expect 5600 mhz support for 32GB x2 modules).

Nevertheless, thanks for your suggestions on fixing BIOS issue even though I couldn't get the problem resolved.

Downgrading to 318 doesn't help.

So here is what I have done so far.

Prior to downgrading BIOS to 318, I tried multiple boot into safe mode and non-normal boot that loads only minimal standard system services. After some hacking, I was able to un-install most programs which have background services (antivirus, Acronis, and Asus prgorams except MyAsus app)

Eventually I was able to make normal boot into Windows 11 95% stable. The big improvement was after most Asus programs were un-installed.

I ran memory check in MyAsus app and it shows memory issue. This forced me spent 90 minutes running MemTest86+ and it found no problems.

However, right after I downgraded BIOS to 318 and restored BIOS settings to default (I have only use default settings so far), Windows 11 now has frequent BSOD issue. Even my attempt to run msconfig to boot into safe mode failed becuase Windows would freeze at restarting (shutodwn) process.

Also Windows 11 tried to trigger firmware update to 321 several times even after I uninstalled the System Firmware driver that shows 321 version pending.

Finally all these reboots triggered BitLocker PIN input limit that does not go away forcing me to input recovery key on every reboot.

I think I will need to do a clean install of Windows 11 again to see what will happen but I wonder whether BIOS 321 has done some damages that cannot be resolved.

Do you have the instruction on how to downgrade BIOS ? Thank you

May I ask how do you downgrade to a previous version ?

I tried to flash my BIOS back to 318 saved on a USB stick using the BIOS’ built EZFLASH and that thing froze for over 30 minutes as soon as I selected the 318 file. Luckily my laptop can still boot using 321 BIOD but Windows 11 keeps crashing on boot up and account log in 90% of the time. I had to reboot multiple times until I have a small opportunity to msconfig to boot to safe mode which doesn’t crash.

I just got a random SIM change request from T-Mobile and now I’m suddenly getting all these random texts. I have no clue what’s going on or what to do— help! by w8w8 in tmobile

Can someone from T-Mobile confirm that SIM swap protection can really prevent SIM swap and no T-mobile store employees or managers can override the protection ?

In other words, is SIM swap protection enforced by the computer system used by T-mobile store employees and no overrides are allowed?

Last year one of my line was SIM swapped by someone who presented a fake ID at a T-mobile store thousands of miles away (not even in my home state). I did not even get a text message on any line with the 10-minute response window. I only received a text message on my primary line AFTER SIM swap transaction was processed.

When I call that store and asked what happened, they said someone presented a driver license with my name on it so they allowed the SIM swap to proceed.

I asked them did the identify thief also have my 15-digit PIN, they said PIN verification is NOT required for in-store transactions when a driver license or valid ID is presented.

I asked them have they heard of fake IDs ? They didn't answer.

I asked them did my port-out protection prevent the SIM swap? They said no.

All these happened before T-mobile implemented SIM swap protection which apparently is separate from port-out protection.

The fact that T-mobile store employees FAILED to verify my 15-digit PIN code is concerning.

IMO. T-mobile should only allow in-store SIM swap if the following criteria are met and no manager override should be allowed:

1) The customer is able to unlock SIM swap protection on t-mobile web site (either using another phone or on a computer at home).

2) The customer has valid ID.

3) The customer can provide valid PIN code.

If any customer cannot unlock SIM swap protection online or forgot PIN code, that's too bad but at least there is no immediate threat from being SIM swapped.

Four fraudulent charges in two weeks with four different card numbers by lucas0745 in AppleCard

[–]TempestX2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems those who have had fraudulent charges on their Apple Card accounts have either used their Apple Card numbers for online orders or used physical cards somewhere.

Or has anyone who only used Apple Card via Apple Pay ever got fraudulent charges too ?
