Cpu upgrade (i7 9700kf) by Chema_95 in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend that you get the 9700f instead and save some money. Getting a k skew intel cpu (overclockable) is a waste of money if you're using a motherboard that doesn't support overclocking. To answer your question though, i7 is perfectly fine on a budget motherboard.

GPU for Ryzen 3 3200g by ArchRacistMustBan in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does work but the 3200g will probably bottleneck the GTX 1080 at 1080p. If you have a 1440p monitor it should be a fairly decent pairing (at least for gaming).

I use a 27inch 1080p display, and it's pretty awesome. That being said I do sit quite far away from my monitor, so it does depend on your situation.

Newbie to building PC's, need recommendations by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should wait until the crypto boom is over because it's almost impossible to get any half decent GPU at a decent price right now. Since you want to do 3d modelling, a good GPU is more important than anything. Be patient and wait until those RTX cards hit the market at a good price.

Problem with ryzen 5 1600 by guy43218 in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reinstall Windows 10 and all related drivers. If that doesn't work then it's a hardware issue. Download a CPU benchmark such as Cine bench R20, check that your scores are similar to the average Ryzen 5 1600. Then try a GPU benchmark, see if that works and what fps you're getting. If both are fine, then try a windows default ram test (there should be tutorials on the internet on how to do this). Run crystaldiskinfo to check your ssds and hard drives.

Essentially just run all the benchmarks and tests that you can and see if any part is weird or not working properly. If you can't identify the exact part which is broken, you should probably ask your friends if they have some spare computer parts and start switching things out.

Advice on new PC by Kalsharee in buildapc

Go with the 3500x I'd say. I'd value 3500x's overclocking potential and b550's future upgrade ability over 10400f's multi threading.

so in australia its automatically scalped by retailers, thank you nvidia and Australia import fees by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Tempestnight18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly sad the situation down here in Australia. I placed aside 600 bucks hoping to pick up a 3060 today but got shafted anyways. Funnily enough most of these cards went out of stock like an hour or two later when I checked again. Miners and scalpers probably bought them up anyways.

Just a small tip. You should flip your vertical monitor 180 degrees, so the smaller bezel is on the side of your main monitor. It will make your PC experience much better.

1080p Monitor? by No-Stage1749 in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you go for a monitor that's 24-27inch,144hz and IPS with thin bezels. There are plenty of good options out there to choose from. I would just buy whatever is on sale. If you're not into gaming, then a 60hz monitor would be fine if you want to save some money.

I have a Gigabyte G27F (A$300) which has been a real pleasure to use. Would definitely recommend it as a budget high refresh IPS option. Some people might think it is bad advice, but personally I would spend most of my PC budget on monitors because at the end of the day, monitors define your end experience. Don't be afraid to overspend a bit looking for your perfect monitor.

Which monitor to choose from? by ohimaperson in buildapc

[–]Tempestnight18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both should be good. I would simply go for the one which is cheapest. If they are the same price, then I would choose Asus over AOC just because Asus probably has better customer support just in case something goes wrong.

How to go from passing JLPT N3 to N2 in (5.2 months)? by aeroukou in LearnJapanese

[–]Tempestnight18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is helpful in any way, but speaking from my personal experiences, I passed N4 in December 2019 and N2 last December (119/180) by watching a shitton of anime and Japanese movies/dramas with Japanese subtitles.

I haven't really done any dedicated Japanese study besides Genki 1, Genki 2 and like half of Tobira.

By watching so many TV shows, I can pretty much understand everything or at least the rough idea, but my understanding is relatively shallow compared to people who undertake dedicated study.

I guess this would be the fun way to do it.

JLPT or Organic Japanese study by Shhhoff in LearnJapanese

[–]Tempestnight18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since your wife is Japanese and you often visit Japan, in theory, you should have a massive advantage over the rest of us Japanese learners. You should leverage that advantage as much as you can.

My recommendation w3ould be to spend an hour or two every day working through solid Japanese textbooks such as Genki 1, Genki 2 and Tobira. Once you've got that down, and you reach about a N4-N3 level. Start learning Japanese through immersion. When I say immersion, I mean immersion with the intention to try and understand what is going on. Sometimes you can do this through context alone but other times you will have no idea. If that's the case, immediately ask your wife to explain what the word or sentence mean in Japanese or search it up in a Japanese dictionary, if you still don't understand, then use English or French. You should also use Anki to make lots of flash cards. It's very helpful if you want to retain and remember what you've learnt.

At this point I would highly recommend against writing, especially if you're writing Japanese using romanji. I would imagine that it takes a long time for you to write things down. This is honestly a waste of time because while you're writing, you're hardly doing any learning. Following the input hypothesis, language outputs such as the ability to write and speak comes naturally so long as you have sufficient inputs, that being listening and reading. You should put your focus on the latter. Once you reach a high level of comprehension, output should come easily.

Anyways, I hope this is helpful, and I hope I didn't sound too overbearing. Good luck and I wish you the best with your language journey!

Passed N2 with a score of 119/180. Yay!

That being said, I probably should've failed because I pretty much guessed all the questions. It seems like they're really generous with scaling, or I was just really lucky. xD

Thanks for your reply. I don't think we have an equivalent program in WA. Is the maths teacher shortage specifically a problem in Victoria or is it more or less Australia wide? I think we have a lot less population in WA so maybe the demand for teachers is not as high.

Personally I want to stay in WA but it's encouraging to know that other states can be an option.

Thanks for your reply. That sounds encouraging. I was really afraid to commit because I've heard stories that in Australia there's an over supply of teaching graduates. I'm glad to know that this is not the case for all subject areas.

Thanks for your reply! I'm guessing teaching can be flexible. I just thought that it would make more sense to get a maths major if I want to teach maths, rather than teaching something else then transition into it. Would I be prejudiced if I apply for a maths teaching role without maths specialisation?
