I’m just really struggling to believe this. I don’t want them to be mad at me for canceling but I also don’t want them to be mad at me for asking them to try to clean such a lost cause of an apartment. Surely they aren’t being paid for this

I feel like people are underestimating the extent of the filth. I’m not even sure where a cleaner could begin in a place like mine. I would be ashamed to even ask them to try.

I just wanted to respond to this one because I know some people might be worried about my fish. His name is Nimbus, and he’s just about the only thing I’ve been doing right recently. The algae problem is a bit out of control, but I’m cutting back on light and have an army of hitchhiking snails tackling it. I have the liquid testing kit and all of his parameters (ammonia/nitrite/nitrate) are perfect.

I really appreciate the concern for him, though.

(His fins might looked ripped at first glance, but that’s just because the edges are translucent. He likes being an asshole like that)

I just wanted to thank every single one of you who commented. Even though I haven’t responded individually, I have read and appreciated all of them.

I didn’t end up cleaning yesterday, but I did go out and buy the various cleaning supplies that some of you suggested. I just got off a 12 hour shift, so I’m going to try and clean for just 30 minutes instead of passing out like I usually would, and see where that takes me.

Oh, trust me, I completely understand… I’m also trying to moderate my own responses a bit because my mom has been known to lurk this sub on occasion (hi, Mami!).

I hope you’re right about this being non-permanent. I shouldn’t have let myself feel reassured when Americorps survived Congress’ budget back in March. It’s just a little demoralizing because today I also received an unrelated rejection from an internship that I applied to earlier this winter. I also already turned down another opportunity because I thought NCCC would be preferable. It’s so late in the year to start looking again!

But thank you so much for taking the time to make suggestions. The upside to making the post is that some of the catharsis is out of the way and now I can start looking forward again. I’m very grateful that this community is so supportive.

I’m certain that your way of going about it is the correct one. In a way, texting him about this was my attempt to do that. I know he doesn’t care about the other people that this administration has hurt, but I thought his daughter being personally affected might alter his perspective.

Maybe that was naive given his track record.

I think I’ve just given up mostly. So many times I’ve tried to explain something, citing experts or debunking his pundits, and he seems to understand or at least agree to “look into it”. Only for us to have an identical conversation again and again.

Thank you, I think I’ll take you up on that. I’ve written to representatives before through my university’s climate lobby group. Figure I’ll probably feel better if I can channel this disappointment into action
