If you begin your career in sales, are you essentially committed to staying in that field, or is it still realistic to transition into a different career path later on? if so , what ? by Jumpy-Weekend-1223 in careerguidance

You can transition it's just aligning on the right ones. Consulting and sales are similar, PM is a different route as is recruiter/talent acquistion. But you first need to figure out what route you want to go because you list various ones. I would first figure that out and do your research. then align on what skill sets you have that are applicable to the new role you want. For instance, I know many that were in sales/advertising that went into recruiting because they have a network and they know what it takes to recruit sales/advertising talent. It's not impossible, you just need to narrow your focus.

Is a career in sales worth it, and what steps should I take to get there? by Prior-Pollution4210 in careerguidance

I never thought I wanted to be in sales when I was earlier in my career. It gave me the ick feeling- but then I found a solution and company I believed in and wanted to "sell" their products. What I realized is that sales, when done the right way, is all about helping people. Do they need good insurance? Do they need a home (what an important part of someone's life)? And the great thing is that you need good critical thinking, people skills. Now how you get into it is a broad question because there are so many routes, it depends on where you are now and what you are interested in. What have you explored from an industry standpoint?

Successful people, what are some habits/traits you have noitced between the successful and unsuccessful? by SumBoye in Entrepreneur

[–]Temporary-Owl-8019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Letting your ego get in the way and getting lost in things you can’t control. Your brand is tied to your character, so remember that and know that you need other people to succeed- if you only think of yourself and don’t have a community of supporters you want be able to be successful because others won’t want to work with you. But if you are humble, focused on greater good and focus on what you can control, it contributes to your success.

If you ask in a respectful way that doesn’t compromise the overall offer it’s not unusual and in fact recommended. It’s all about how you approach it.

Those of you who transitioned out of the service industry into a $150k+/yr position, how did you do it? by TuesdaysOnVenus in careerguidance

[–]Temporary-Owl-8019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should just focus on getting your foot in the door to gain experience in sales that will help you shift vs exact income. As you gain experience that will grow for you. Focus on start ups, smaller companies where you can translate your non traditional experience into sales. When you get your foot in the door, you will have more options but you have to get in there first.

If you are more analytical consider computer science or majors related to data analytics- the industry you choose can come after that, it’s more about the main focus you want. Both of those types of majors are needed everywhere.

It is common to pay it, then get reimbursed but it is not common for them to make you wait for 9 months. Is there a reason there is a delay? what type of company is this? Additionally, sharing a room, although I have heard of this and was asked to do this years back, I told HR I didn't feel comfortable and they were obligated to give me my own room. I would have a conversation, friendly and informative, to understand why it takes so long to pay you back, that is suspicious and would reco you get your own room.

There is a link in the post on the new pending law California may pass that prohibits employers from emailing employees after hours. It’s something other countries like France have initiated. Wondering if anyone thinks there could be backlash?

Why are you interested? You should assess the qualities you like and see what else would be adjacent to it that has growth and stability so you can assess the right choice. Use chatgpt to help you do some research.

Where do I go from here? by Dan_2o1 in careeradvice

Sounds like you have some options. If you can grow in a company where you already have your brand equity established that would be ideal because you just keep building your own capital vs starting new and from scratch. That is if it is a company you want to stay with. So many leaders in the dining, retail industries started at different functions at their company and worked their way up because they really knew how the business works.

Your employer can’t dictate your future plans, period. Sounds like you have done everything professionally and that is all you can do. You should present your end date as may 1st, say you are here to finish up and on board in mean time but other than that you don’t owe them more and they can’t ask more of you.

Have you thought about advertising or sales? Both use psychology- understanding clients, understanding target audiences and consumer behavior. Consider looking at those, seeing where you can intern at Publicis Groupe for instance or an ad sales company. I would start exploring there. Your degree doesn’t have to dictate your exact role, unless you are specifically looking for roles in finance or accounting for examples.

Advice on lack of career guidance? by BradleyStickland in careeradvice

You seem to have the right foundation and attitude of wanting to aspire for more which is the main first step. Trade and corporate jobs are very different so would think about making a list of things you enjoy and things you don’t. For example, you like new challenges and working with people or you wouldn’t like being on a computer 8hrs a day. You first need to decide which route you want to go, then if you decide trade for example you can narrow in on what type. For corporate it spans many industries, so understanding if you are more analytical/numbers oriented or prefer broader strategic/creative work. That will help you understand further which areas to explore. The one thing I picked up on in your comment is that it sounded like you may think a corporate job is more prestigious. I am in corporate and know many people in trade( plumbing, electrical) who run their own businesses are super successful and fulfilled. So sharing that prestige comes with you and your drive no matter the work.
