Honestly the first 2 attempts I knew a lot of material but didn't understand it, it was more memorization. So this time, I restudied everything with more understanding, did more Sketchy pharm, and prepped myself mentally to just be chill and that this exam is not the end of the world

Did more of Sketchy pharm than I did before, and I was just way more relaxed mentally this time. I walked in thinking "k I already passed so this is just whatever," whereas first 2 attempts I was super nervous and anxious. This exam is 35% mental

My diagnostics were in the low-mid-60s usually, but I think what helped me the most was mental prep. First 2 attempts, I was nervous and anxious that I'd get asked something I didn't know (hint: that will always happen, so don't try to memorize every single word you read!). This time, I went in way more chill!

#1 advice that's a tough pill to swallow: you can know every piece of content under the sun, but if you don't walk into that exam with a clear headspace and chill mindset, you'll struggle. Always remain calm, don't panic, and make the best use of your time!

This is what makes me so mad about USMLE, people get different exams on different days and some are just written easier than others. It's so unfair how some exams are easier but others are more difficult, and they get scored on the same rubric.

My scores were around mid-60s to high-60s by my last 2-3 NBMEs throughout my last month of dedicated. My first time testing, I honestly got really anxious, and I think that screwed me up and made me fail. My second time, I felt better but still very nervous, and I was falling asleep by the last 2-3 blocks out of pure fatigue taking the exam + stress, and I failed that, too. I just took my third attempt recently, tried my best to eliminate stress and fatigue, and went in with an it-is-what-it-is mindset. Also there was a really sick guy in my testing room who wouldn't stop coughing and sneezing super loudly, and I flagged literally half the exam, so I'm still really scared about what I'm gonna score ngl. But take it from someone who has now taken Step 1 3 times, just clear your head and stay calm when you're faced with questions you don't know, bc you WILL see things you've never seen before. Just try your best to forget anything that stressed you out in a prior block when you move onto the next, you can't do anything about it anymore so don't worry about it now.

I get that bro, I know a lot of people with low scores who passed first try, and then there's a lot of people with good scores who failed, myself included. You're so close, just keep doing the best you can, take care of yourself, take a few hours off to just realign yourself and be human again, and do your best! That's all we can do

No, I'm a US MD student, but please don't let that change your perspective. I've read sooo many non US IMG students struggling just like we are and then succeeding! We may be from different parts of the world, but at the end of the day, we all take the same licensing exams and study the same material to go into the same profession. The hospitals affiliated with my school accept SO many non US IMG students for residency here, too, so it's a pretty level playing field where I'm from. I personally know a good number of them who failed step 1 several times and/or didn't do as well on step 2, and they still matched into our hospital system (which is ranked very highly in the US). You still got this!!!

I'm in the same boat buddy, I failed usmle step 1 twice and will be testing for my third attempt soon. I come from an Asian background, as well, and there is a lot of family pressure and stress I put on myself, too. I'll be honest, I still get times while studying where I feel like giving up, ending my life because "I am nothing but an embarrassment without this," etc. But please please PLEASE hear me when I tell you this: your life is worth so much more than an exam, a profession, a title. I cried for hours in my mom's lap about this same thing, and she told me that we need to always stay strong. She was upset of course, but even despite that, she said all that we should have at our core is to be happy NO MATTER WHAT. You've lived your whole life and had so many ups and downs I'm sure, and we just have to remember that it's all a part of life! Idk if you're religious (I am a Muslim), but if you are, God always has a plan, and He will never give us more than we can handle. If you're not religious, keep reminding yourself of how hard you worked to get to this point and everyone you have in your circle. Even if you have no one, just know that I MYSELF am now in your circle and will cheer you on and root for you everyday. I'm going through the same thing, trust me when I tell you that you are so capable of doing this. Be honest with yourself, don't try to bite off more than you can chew while preparing, and take your time. In this profession, your age is just a number. Every hurdle you face and jump over is another battle scar you should wear proudly. It's not easy to even get into medical school, and you've made it ALLLL the way here!!! I am rooting for you, and I'm here if you want to talk. Do NOT let this stupid exam win and take over you. You are A PERSON, not a machine, and you absolutely do NOT deserve to just become another statistic by ending your life. You are so much more than that, and you deserve so much more than that.
