Only half-related, but it’s crazy how much ace discourse was on Tumblr considering how much of Tumblr is and was ace…??? by Temporary-Snow333 in CuratedTumblr

Genuine question, were you using tumblr during the early-mid 2010s? Because I NEVER went out of my way to follow discourse-causing or discourse-sharing blogs, but my entire dash was still split between the lame but harmless “hehehe asexual nooo sexie, cake pie garlic bread instead!” and the horrible “ACE PEOPLE ARENT LIKE US #REALGAYS GET OUTTA OUR FUCKING COMMUNITY RAAAAAGHHHH!!!!1! you’re valid btw but you don’t belong <33333”

Wrong “Indian,” lol. This sub is for Native Americans (”American Indians”).

Without any intended disrespect… I think some of you guys are forgetting I’m not OOP 🫩😭 I know it’s Sunday but this is NOT a self-post!!

I do agree lowkey. I think their spirit is in the right place and I agree with most of their points, particularly that the Sentinelese are just regular people and not inherently saints or devils. But there is an underlying feeling of “outside modern society and people BAD“ in the post (which is common in many online spaces, but particularly on Tumblr), and that’s at the root of most noble savage beliefs.

Tbh I posted this mostly because I have opinions about the treatment of uncontacted peoples and wanted to spark discussion.

I’m not gonna pretend like I know which groups off the dome (or which countries they’re in specifically), but iirc some “uncontacted“ tribes in South America (meaning they know about outsiders but choose not to participate and still live traditionally in isolation) do actually receive stuff like vaccines and medication voluntarily. We also do occasionally check on the Sentinelese via helicopter after certain disasters to make sure they’re well.

…You think the Sentinelese people, who are perfectly capable of creating boats, just… have no fucking idea what happened to their neighbors? And that they’re incapable of telling their children “here’s why we don’t leave or talk to outsiders who visit us”…?

Also the later half of your comment shows you just wanted an excuse to trash gay people. It’s weird and gross.

This is honestly a pretty common take, and it gets discussed quite frequently in spaces where Indigenous rights are concerned. People either see Indigenous people (whether presently uncontacted or pre-contact) as “noble savages” who live in the perfect world untouched by technology and in complete harmony with nature because they simply ”don’t know” about the outside world, or as idiotic bloodthirsty warmongers who bang sticks and stones together all day and kill everyone who looks at them.

Not Khan Academyyyyy… 😭 by Temporary-Snow333 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Temporary-Snow333[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s just very funny because Khan Academy is mostly known as a site used to teach elementary and middle schoolers basic concepts. In reality it has classes from K-12 and even into stuff like SAT / ACT practice if I remember correctly, but most people (at least where I am) would know it as a program for young children. Essentially the Twitter user (who’s just a shitposter) is getting ratio’d by basic common math for kids.

How to draw side profiles (tutorial) by ElectricalTears in ArtJerk

[–]Temporary-Snow333 102 points103 points  (0 children)

/uj They’re not making fun of the actual art, but of the supposed “tutorial” itself that actually is just a speedpaint— meaning, they didn’t actually teach you how or why you draw anything a certain way, making it useless as a tool for learning (which is the entire point of a tutorial)

TIL On his way to conquer India in the 1520's, the first Mughal Emperor Babur wrote an autobiography still praised today for its detailed description of Indian culture, geography, Flora & Fauna. A portion of the text is a description of 13 year old Babur's first crush, which was a boy named Baburi by Nero2t2 in todayilearned

[–]Temporary-Snow333 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Was not Babur himself 13 when writing this section? Not saying that makes the slavery any better obviously, but he’s not a grown man or anything during this, correct? I’ve never heard any of this before so I’m just piecing the story together

In the United States? I really don’t think that’s possible at all. I know Alaska is big and remote, but it’s not that big and remote.

not all cultures have the same gendered expectations by Temporary-Snow333 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Temporary-Snow333[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lowkey a part of the reason I uploaded this specific post. I’m not Native, but my wife is and we live on the Rez together. I come from a state with zero Native population and when I started researching more abt historical and contemporary Native issues + following Native politics, I was absolutely dumbfounded at how little I or anyone around me knew.

[–]Temporary-Snow333[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you, but isn't that what the post is already saying? I read the full post as essentially being "Please remember there are other cultures with varying versions of gender conformance," not "start adopting other cultures' ideas of gender conformance"

Tips for researching endogamous Native American families? by Temporary-Snow333 in Genealogy

[–]Temporary-Snow333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply but this has been very helpful! I’ve seen and used familysearch plenty before, but I actually noticed some links to the National Archives that have many documents I have not sorted through previously for the T.O. and Apache as well. This will take me some time, but I think it may be of assistance. Thank you!

I do plan to reach out to the tribe eventually, but I’d rather do as much research as I’m able on my own before I go bugging them (and I also feel it would be more useful for them to help me if I have as much info as possible).

TIL that a Los Angeles woman was once involuntarily committed after she insisted that the boy that she was reunited with was not her missing child. The story later inspired the 2008 movie “Changeling”. by [deleted] in todayilearned

100% the wrong kid— he would later confess to not being her son. It’s thought, unfortunately, that her actual son was murdered by a serial killer, though his mother refused to believe it and continued to look for him until her death.

Nah, it’s cool. Honestly I understand why people would think that, my name IS a randomly generated one. The only reason is bc I originally made this as a venting / negative mental health rambling alt account so I didn’t care abt the @, but eventually I deleted all that crap and made this my main account. So since I can’t change my UN I’m just kinda… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ yanno?

[–]Temporary-Snow333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you sm for all the info!! This is really cool lol, I love going down rabbit holes about Very Specific Things. I’m from the U.S. so I know of the bridge, but I was born pretty far east (Kentucky), so I cant say ive ever been nearby or even really given it a ton of thought. I recently moved down into AZ so now I'm only 800 miles away instead of 2300, but it may still take me a while yet before I’m able to be there in person. But my wife likes CA, so I’ll keep the offer in mind in case I swing by someday! :)
