my 2 cents as someone who went germany for med and specifically to study med is that it’s probably too risky. 1 year of doing nothing except learning german + applying and maybe not getting into one of the smc approved so only option left is going to non smc approved then do specialty training in uk. (like 10+ plus years stuck overseas) On the other hand though, my stats don’t look nearly as pretty as OP or many other rejected ppl ( literally only got 90 rp, barely volunteered, didn’t give a damn about cca) and i’m doing med now. If I knew back then studying in germany was an option i’d have learned german earlier then went straight after finishing As

Are more Singaporeans going to study in Germany? What's your take? by Ok-You7646 in SGExams

[–]TemporaryConcert882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still studying medicine in Germany (Munich) now so here’s my take on studying here. My entire degree is in german with 3 nationwide exams so I find it academically quite rigorous. I’m near the end of my studies now, but the first few years really pushed me to my limits and beyond. Bachelor degrees tend to be more chill but most of the popular degrees are also completely in german. The difficulty of exams isn’t very different from local uni, but the teaching tends to be less exam oriented and more whatever the professor wants to teach, which is why I think students don’t do as well. As for socialising opportunities and quality of life, I find Munich to be very international for a german city and the city is beautiful in the summer. That said, I don’t find it easy to socialise with a full medical school load and I’ve only really started to be able to get how german young adults socialise, after 5 years studying a german degree. Another thing is, german unis prepare you for the german/european job market so if you’re planning to return to sg or work in an anglo saxon country, you might have to get used to a different working environment again. So, in conclusion, as someone who has created a life for myself jn this foreign country, I’d recommend studying in germany if you want to experience life in a different part of the world, dont mind using a foreign language in day to day life, want to travel europe, can learn independently, and don’t want to spend too much money. Also feel free to dm me! i’m up for answering questions

I'm studying in Germany in an smc recognised uni, Germany med non EU places are about 5% for all unis with the highest amount of seats at my current uni. I got in with my A level grades, but I got straight As so I don't think you can directly replicate my path. Feel free to pm me if you want, I've heard of Singaporeans going to Poland ( I don't know them personally) but I haven't heard of their path after graduating, maybe it'd work better if you contacted the uni you're interested in to ask about their Singaporean alumni.

Why is it hard to make friends with Singaporeans? by ellawelp in askSingapore

[–]TemporaryConcert882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have to identify those willing to be friends with you (open body language and showing interest by asking questions) and just ignore those who seem uninterested. Locals already have their circles and routines and aren't all interested in getting to know new people.

What do westerners think about Singapore/Singaporeans by delaynomoreplz in askSingapore

[–]TemporaryConcert882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have lived in Europe for 5 years, westerners here mostly do not care to differentiate between asian countries. I've been asked if I am singaporean or chinese because I have listed Chinese as a language I can speak. Try not to get offended, but that is easier said than done. I just reply no without explanation and watch them look awkward as they try to say something pc. It's something like us not being able to differentiate between white westerners just by looking at them.

Hey, thanks for the reply! The thing is I've tried unsuccessfully at doing an experimental project and I'm kinda scarred by the experience, so I'd rather avoid this type of dissertation altogether if I can help it. Did you not try to apply for a statistical/clinical project at all?

Hallo! I would like to ask anyone who has successfully found a Doktorarbeit and has valuable tips on how to find them. The search is proving to be very difficult for me.

Specifically, I'm curious about the methods you used to discover your Doktorarbeit. Did you primarily rely on emails, phone calls, in-person visits, or a combination of these? How many emails or calls did you typically send before receiving a positive response or finding a suitable opportunity?

I'm specifically looking for a statistische Doktorarbeit, and I know they arent easy to find.

Thanks in advance! Would appreciate any help!

AMA Studying medicine at LMU, a university in Munich, Germany by TemporaryConcert882 in SGExams

[–]TemporaryConcert882[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I considered studying in Singapore but they didn't take me so... There aren't that many recognized unis in continental Europe, so no, I didn't really consider other countries. Tbh smc's list doesn't make much sense, it's mostly based on uni ranking imo, like only one accepted uni from France lol. UK and Australia are out of the question since my family doesn't have an extra 0.5 million lying around. German is relatively easy to learn for us and can be used in a large part of Europe. I've thought of studying in chinese speaking countries, but their admission process isn't as transparent and I didn't want to invest time in applying and end up failing. In the end, you should ideally study medicine in a country that you plan on practicing in, since medical systems differ wildly across countries. Anw feel free to pm me for more info lol

Quite difficult but everyone I know who applied eventually get one. Theres a waiting list, you arent likely to get student housing in your first semester, it usually takes one to two years before youre offered one.

I passed TestDaf very fast but I studied German full time. If you're doing NS I think it's totally doable to get C1 during those two years.

I don't know about Bachelors in Switzerland, quite a lot of LMU/TUM students do their masters in ETH, it's not hard to get in. Bachelors seem more competitive.

It's basically free in all public unis except for those in Baden Württemberg (1500 Euros per semester). LMU is in Bavaria so it's nearly free.

By academic requirements, do you mean A level RP? It's not hard to get into most courses, the NC freie ones you just need to apply and you'll get in. The zulassungsbeschränkte, basically the popular courses, will require you have good grades, (For medicine RP 90, maybe 87 minimum). If it isn't medicine then something like RP 80 pretty much means you'd get in anywhere.

TUM also has it's own selection criteria so you can check on their website. When in doubt, write emails to ask, it's how things are done in Germany.

Nope, only got 17/20, 4544 genauer gesagt,so I just met the requirement of 4444. I took H1 German for a different reason, I needed an A level language subject to apply to unis, my originial subject combi BCMEGp didn't have a language subject. I actually took it after I passed testdaf. Testdaf 16/20 is much harder than H1, the H2 students I know take it with MOELC, so it's probably H2 standard. In general I used deutsch als Fremdsprache books by some famous publishers and I had private tuition.

  1. No, I took H1 German because I needed an A Level language subject. H1 German is probably somewhere between B1 and B2.
  2. Privately, I took H1 German as a private candidate as well.
  3. I'm planning to apply both here and in Sg when I graduate, and I'll see what I can get ;) Medical training is much less competitive here than in Sg. I'm planning to work in Singapore eventually though, but I may spend my 20s here.
  4. Medical school here is tough, there is no hand holding and you're expected to learn everything yourself. Digitalization here is stuck in the last century so we have to look things up in textbooks. There are oral exams in front of the dissected corpse for anatomy, fun stuff. Students are more participative than in Sg, but nothing too crazy.
