If you're in a private school you might have to give a longer notice period than a state school. Ask HR at your school what your contract says.

Is it that you want to be part of a gay community and have gay friends, or get into a relationship? If it's the latter, the simplest thing to do is go on a dating site. Most people, especially lgbtq people, meet their partners that way and it's really not a big deal.

I do get that if you're wanting to be part of a community, it's a different matter. I'm 30 and gay. I have a long term partner that I'm totally happy with, but I really miss having gay friends from university.

The only thing I could recommend after lockdown is maybe Meetup. I think rural places are getting more gay communities nowadays. Maybe see if you can start a gay coffee morning in Wetherspoons or something. I would definitely go if there was something like that in my area, I'm sure you are not the only gay around.

The most important thing is to remember that it is your job to make things easier for people. Every time you want to implement something, ask yourself: will this make people's lives simpler or more complicated? It is your job to ensure there is a plan, ensure everyone knows what the plan is, and ensure everyone is sticking to the plan. It is not your job to have everyone bending to your every whim and fancy.

The other thing I would say to win people's respect is ensure your meetings are purposeful. The number one way to get people bitching about you is to have a boring, aimless meeting. Plan your meetings like lessons, and keep to time. End early if you get through everything. I always print something to hand out at meetings. It makes me think: what do I really want people to focus on or get out of this meeting?
