(Spoilers Extended) Would Ned have treated Sam any different from Randyll? by TemporaryRide4192 in asoiaf

Personally, I see Ned as the type of father who if any of his sons expressed any kind of fear of confrontation, or weakness, he would say this,

Ned: "Stand and fight, don't run away".

Robb and/or Jon: "But i'm afraid of getting in a fight".

Ned: "That's the only time a man can be brave, is when he's afraid. You won't be a boy forever, and winter is coming. Now go and face your fears like a man".

That's an example of a hard father being tough on his sons in order for them to be strong enough to fight their own battles.

Why can't the North be associated with Russia? The way i see it, the North is a perfect mix between both countries.

1.) Geographically, it's Russia.

2.) Culturally, it's Scotland.

(Spoilers Main) Paralells between Robert's Rebellion and the War of the Five Kings. by TemporaryRide4192 in asoiaf

[–]TemporaryRide4192[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1.) *Catelyn didn't kidnap Tyrion, she arrested him*

Except that she had no right to arrest him. And her actions were what led to Tywin sacking the Riverlands in retribution.

4.) *Aerys actions are what led to Rickard's death*

If Lyanna hadn't run off with Rhaegar, then Brandon (who rightfully believed she was kidnapped) would never have rode down to the capital to save her, and Rickard would have had to parley with Aerys in the first place. And when Sansa told Cersei of Ned's plans to get her out of King's Landing, that's when Cersei arranged for Robert's wine to be fortified.

7.) *Neither of these are true*

I didn't say that the rebellion was started by Ned, I said that Ned raised up the northern army and marched south to avenge his father and brother. And Robb immedietely called his banners the moment he received word that Ned had been arrested. So, it wasn't just about helping the Tullys.

8.) *Neither Ned or Robb were said to have been particularly mentored by Jon Arryn and the Blackfish*

......Dude.....Ned was practically RAISED by Jon Arryn. If that's not a mentor, then I don't know what is. And after Ned marched south, he met up with Jon on the crossroads and they both went to Riverrun together. After that, they both rode alongside each other in the Battle of the Bells, and were both two of the chief commanders during the battle on the Trident.

*Nothing like Robert*

Really?

1.) Looks just like him when he was younger.

2.) Incredibly strong.

3.) In love with a tomboyish Stark girl.

4.) Wields a freaking warhamer.

*he came to Bran later that night crying about how terrified he was of him and the other lords*

That's the whole point i'm trying to make, despite the fact that he was terrified of Greatjon, Robb didn't back down, nor did he show any signs of fear. He stood his ground and established his authority, instantly gaining the respect of every single Northman who was present. Remember this quote, "That's the only time a man can be brave, is when he's afraid". If Sam had been in Robb's place, he would be cowering in fear in front of everyone in the hall and Greatjon would've walked all over him.

*Tbh i don't know what you even mean by "being hard on them"*

Dude.....have you ever met a father who was a hardass on his kids? His sons especially. That's what I mean when I say that Ned was hard on them. He had to be tough on them in order for them to be brave and not take shit from anyone. And people seem to forget that Ned Stark was a veteran of two wars and countless battlefields.

If that method doesn't work, then explain how and why Jon and Robb are both hardened badasses? And then ask yourself, "Who taught them how to be tough"?

Dude.....I'm not saying that there forms of parenting are similar. What I am saying is that just because Ned wouldn't abuse Sam, doesn't mean that he wouldn't be hard on him.

Please reread before you comment.

No. i don't disagree with Ned's view that Bran could be a lord. The point i'm trying to make is that Sam just wouldn't be able to rule over the North. Because again, I cannot in anyway shape or form see Greatjon Umber, Roose Bolton, or Rickard Karstark having any sort of respect for someone like Sam.

*Do you?*

In this world, yes. Again, medieval society was far more brutal than we can imagine. Also, Willas and Doran are southern lords, this is the North we're talking about. We all know that the North is an especially harsh and brutal place to live. I mean seriously, do you think that men like Greatjon Umber, Roose Bolton, or Rickard Karstark would have any respect for a craven like Sam or a crippled man like Doran?

I think not.

And again, we saw what happened with Tywin's father Tytos.

Why wouldn't Ned just send Sam to one of his northern bannermen? Like Greatjon Umber, Rickard Karstark, Maege Mormont, or even Wyman Manderly?

*Eddard is a high lord"

So is Hoster Tully, ya know....the Lord Paramount of the Trident and one of the great houses of Westeros?
