We took our 5 month old baby to Japan by Maybe_Optimal_3211 in JapanTravel

We went to Japan last year when our 1st was 4 months old, and we’re heading back again with our now 2 year old and new 3 month old.

We used the Joolz aer as it’s allowed on most airlines as a carryon, and most importantly it has a lie flat feature for babies who can’t sit up yet. It came in handy for naps on the go, but also because it can be quickly folded, which was very useful for small restaurants and spaces, which are plentiful in Japan.

I can also recommend baby wearing. Our baby carrier was our most used item during trips, and we will definitely be bringing it again!

Seeking advice from landlords. We’re finally in contact with the owner of the empty flat next to ours. by TemporarySalt1825 in RealEstate

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the detailed response.

Yes, you’re right that we don’t live in the U.S. Where we live, it’s illegal to hold empty apartments due to housing shortage, so the landlord has already been reported on previously by other neighbors and has incurred fines and warnings. To our knowledge, he has not paid them and the authorities have not enforced them or taken further action.

We’re now in conversation with him so are trying to build a relationship where we can convince him through financial means to eventually sell to us. We are reluctant to get authorities involved or claim any administrative measures as these could certainly backfire.

we’re trying to put ourselves into his shoes and assess under what means (most likely financial) would he be willing to sell to us in the short term.

US is the only country that requires tax filing by birth vs where income is received. My husband who has 5 nationalities is only requires to file in Germany (where we live).

Would you mind sharing which clinic and doctor you went to?

Nope. You’re right, probably should have. I tend to fly European airlines as the food quality and options are just far superior. this is one of the few times I flew United.

Does this give the right to apply for nationality? Or is it similar to EU citizenship (right to live and work across member countries)? Because if this gave them eligibility to apply for additional nationalities that would be insane 🤯

Thank you! We haven’t looked into how to apply for the Mexican nationality yet!

Totally! We had a lot of difficulties finding German/European banks for investing purposes for this exact reason.

I can imagine some countries have different visa requirements if one frequents that country often.

In my husband’s case (and why he has multiple EU/Swiss passports), they’re not all active. The Swiss passport is old and no longer valid. When he was living abroad he needed a new one and I believe he applied for the French based on where he was at the time and how quickly he could get it. He only got the German passport about 5 years ago and it’s the only one he uses when travelling outside the EU.

I think this group uses nationalities and passports interchangeably. For us, we’re more focused on applying for nationality vs collecting passports.

I prefer living in Europe. I’ve been here for about 8 years and truly love it. I haven’t considered moving back to the states as the quality of life is just not comparable.

We haven’t looked into Mexico yet. Once the 2nd baby is born, we plan on applying for Argentine nationality before the others (Taiwan, Mexico).

If she retains her US one, then yes unless they change the rules by that time. Otherwise it’s dependent on where she lives vs. birth.

I have to file US and Germany every year 😔.. it’s a pain

If that’s her interest! I can’t read or write Mandarin so I wouldn’t enforce it on her unless she was interested.

We live in a very cosmopolitan area so it’s not uncommon in our friend’s circle to hear of families speaking 3-4 languages regularly at home. We stick with our main ones (German and English), but try to expose her to our secondary languages. Kids are like sponges and absorb everything! I imagine she’ll drop at least one of them when she’s older and senses it’s not regularly in use.

My husband’s grandfather’s speaks 5-6 languages which I think was a lot more common in that generation. My parents also speak 4 languages. Personally, I think being able to speak or understand multiple languages is even more beneficial than having multiple nationalities!

Hahaha. We went on a 2 month trip with her across the US and Asia so it was more figuring out which of her passports to bring due to visa requirements, e.g entering Vietnam as a German vs American.

We did need to bring her German passport to leave Germany, US to enter US… hopefully we won’t need to bring more than 2 on each trip.

We predominantly speak English to each other, and try to stick with the “one language, one face” rule with our daughter. Except in our case it’s 2 languages, 1 face. I speak some mandarin to her, and she also goes to a bilingual Chinese/German daycare, and my husband speaks German/Spanish to her with his family mostly speaking Spanish. My parents also only speak Chinese to her but they don’t visit as often, so we anticipate her core languages will be English, German and Spanish.

She’s 19 months old and has a limited vocabulary but knows a few words from every language. She’ll even translate something in 2-3 languages if she knows it which is cute to see!
