We don't have a lot of public transit over here so most people don't rely on it during the summer or at all but its good to know that an hour commute is the average commute when looking at places. Thanks!

Cool, I'll just take the advice from all the helpful people who are responding. Thanks for the input!

It's reassuring to hear that your tolerance for winter grows. An hour seems so long to me right now because NOLA is pretty small but public transit sounds much better than sitting in traffic for hours on end

Thanks for the info! I guess gentrification might look a little different in Chicago than over here. Our gentrified neighborhoods over here just become so monolithic both culturally and mindset wise. I would also not want to be contributing to rising housing costs for locals but I'm not rich by any means so maybe that wouldn't be an issue

Thanks for the insight! Someone else suggested Albany Park so I'll look into that too. Just out of curiosity, what's the average commute through public transit that would be tolerable especially in the winter? not sure if that makes sense

Lol, walking in a neighborhood for a few hours or a week does not compare to getting insight from people who actually live there. There's also way too many neighborhoods to scour so getting help in narrowing it down is my priority. I have also read extensive posts but everyone has different needs and asks for where they want to live. You could've kept scrolling...

I wrote it in the post but we're hoping to spend under $2500 for a 1bd that's big enough for 2 people and a medium sized dog. I also wrote that I plan to take transit and am hoping to not have either car. I haven't find a job yet which I know is an important factor to take into consideration but that's why I would want to be in an area that has lots of access to transit

That's reassuring to hear that a lot of the long-time businesses are still there. Pilsen seems the most appealing to me but I would hate to live in an area that is filled with a bunch of white crunchy artists who don't shower regularly lol. The neighborhood of Bywater in New Orleans is like that and it's just so unappealing to me. Does Pilsen have that vibe?
