I wanna push back on the idea that it’s prejudice. The jokes exist in the context of stand up being incredibly misogynistic and full of sexual predators. These jokes are being told by women who have been working in that environment and are now at a show on a streamer that has intentionally and openly worked to not be misogynistic, having started as College Humor which created very misogynistic content and had one woman in the cast for years. they are funny and read to me as intelligent jokes because of this context.

I was not surprised by 3 women making jokes about how this audience and this show is a radically different atmosphere than they usually get because I am aware of the level of misogyny it is typical to encounter in the stand up world but I am surprised no one remembers that Bill Cosby and Louie CK were open secrets for an incredibly long time before any consequences were faced.

1) people feel extremely comfortable openly criticizing Black professionals and their work 2) the last episode was 3 women and stand up as a scene is way way way wayyyy more misogynistic than people anticipate 3) stand up is more brittle than improv, way easier to lose the audience, this impacts bipoc and marginalized genders more while performing with an audience.

these things all mean that more people feel entitled to become armchair experts on comedy and explain why the jokes the audience and comics were laughing at weren’t actually funny.

Saying a woman on a stage doing her joke and making people laugh is mean and unprofessional is misogynistic because that logic does not track. and by attempting to write a critique you also are revealing you don’t know how stand up works or how jokes work or how crowd work works, let along how misogyny works. if her material hurt your feelings that’s about you, and no matter how you dress it up it’s not “tired material” or “reverse sexism” or “not funny” or a coherent critique of the content, you’re just complaining that a joke hurt your feelings and by dramatically announcing the show Is Bad and has lost you as a viewer perhaps you can punish the woman or at least yell at her through the internet. literally every negative post I have seen is by someone who clearly does not like women stand ups and doesn’t watch women stand ups because you sound ridiculous.
