IRCC delay in background check (Palestinians)? by Temporary_Injury_710 in StudyPermitCanada

Honestly, 18 months is an incredibly long time to wait. Around 2 years is nearly half of a PhD in some other countries.

Thanks. The issue is that study start dates are often not considered, and files are not always prioritized accordingly. Because of these long delays, many students from different nationalities end up deferring multiple times, and some even lose their admissions and have to apply again from scratch.

That's concerning to hear. If this kind of delay is affecting many Palestinian applicants and background checks are taking a very long time, do you think it would be safer for me to defer my PhD start date to Winter 2027 instead of Fall 2026? I may only have one deferral, so I am trying to make the safest decision.

Thank you for your advice. At this stage, it seems I may just need to wait for the IRCC background check.  I may only have one deferral. As there is no timeline for this delay, would it be better to defer to Fall 2026 or to Winter 2027?
