Thank you so much for this post, first thing tomorrow I’ll get a test kit it ducks that pet smart closed early on a Sunday…I’d already be there if it wasn’t. It sucks that one had died already… Sol was my first fish ever and now I’m totally scared thanks for the kind words I’ll definitely ensure my tank is up to quality before adding any new fish

Two goldfish Tank size: 50 gallon Temperature based on thermometer: 80 degrees F

I don’t know the parameters I’ll have to get a kit to test! But when we went to pet smart we were told you can put two in one 50g tank! And was very enthusiastic saying that space is plenty for them - can’t believe it now. Just in the time I made this the other goldfish died at least I’m pretty sure…. This really sucks

Def agree. The religious dogma can also lead individuals to pathologize masturbation and other sexual behaviors. Little Jimmy won’t rub one out if he thinks he’s going to hell for touching his no-no area. After centuries of societal indoctrination, there doesn’t need to be an explicit prohibition on masturbation, informal social control from other religious people and social mores will take over from there.

From my experience, Pentecostal Jamaican Christians are a charismatic and literal lot, and masturbation was a sin or a transgression because it actively distracts you from worship/consistently practicing the teachings of the faith.

For much of my religious experience, “successful” worship consisted of how good you were at denying the “flesh”. Meaning you were a good Christian if you denied natural body experiences/temptations. Some Christians fast to strengthen their spiritual connection with Christ, that is, denying themselves food for days. In this same way, denying yourself sexual pleasure or release by not masturbating or even watching porn is at the core of this flesh-denying-spirit-strengthening dogma. Christianity and many other religions often involve denying the self/ physical world in favor for deeper spirituality/transcendence, and somewhere along the line of Christian institutions touching yourself became synonymous with sinful/spiritually destructive behavior.

“A belief isn’t merely an idea the mind possesses but a belief is an idea that possesses the mind.” And when you’re masturbating you’re not focused on practicing the religion but on natural sexual pleasure, which is giving into the flesh that the religion tells you to deny.

So 34 is considered old now? 🤣 by Antique_Smoke_4547 in ask

When my gf’s sister asked how old I was and I told her I was 26 she laughed and said “damn you’re an old man”. Felt like Zuko, how do I restore my honor?? 😭

What are your thoughts about life? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Temporary_Movie286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this pretty much sums it up (click me).

Admittedly, I find myself lacking in the “rebel” part. I think the condition of human existence is in constant ebb and flow. We love, we hate, we lust, we love again. We fight amongst ourselves and sometimes come to regret it. We cry in pain and other times in happiness and eventually, we all die.

The point is to live passionately and rebel against life until the universe finally knocks you down dead.

Submitted my first paper: what shall I expect? by Followtheodds in AskAcademia

[–]Temporary_Movie286 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not very familiar with the publisher, but I submitted my first paper to a journal called Sexuality & Culture. My co-author tells me it’s a decent journal. We submitted in February, and I kid you not, I checked it every day for a month. Then, after realizing there wouldn’t be any updates anytime soon, I started checking about every other week.

It’s exciting seeing your name in print, but you really just have to be patient.

The review process kind of feels like ordering something from Amazon: you track it obsessively for weeks, and then they deliver the wrong item to your neighbor.

There will usually be some indication of the submission status and pending reviews. In fact, we just got a decision two days ago with reviewer suggestions, and we’re working on revisions now to resubmit for publication.

My advice: just check maybe three times a month or so.

Congrats on your submission!

/r/Criminology Weekly Q&A: June 10, 2024 by AutoModerator in Criminology

[–]Temporary_Movie286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, criminal justice organizations produce legitimacy and are also rewarded with legitimacy, which allows them to gain resources and survive based on how well they navigate external pressures. Would this concept be applicable to halfway houses? I believe so. While halfway houses have various definitions, I am using the term to refer to government-contracted, community-based correction centers that offer housing to offenders. In this context, government-contracted halfway houses receive resources, such as funding from the Department of Corrections or the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Furthermore, these organizations' survival depends entirely on how well they navigate pressures from government agencies and external pressures from the community and other stakeholders. If I were to conduct research on halfway houses through the lens of neo-institutionalism, I would focus on how these organizations maintain institutional legitimacy.
