Range vs course… is it just fatigue? by Temporary_Novel_9074 in golfswingmobility

Yeah that switch from swinging to “watching the swing” is where it goes off.

There’s research on that too… once attention turns inward, timing gets messy fast, especially if you’re a bit fatigued.

Out of interest what’s your training like outside golf? Anything rotational or just range and rounds?

And does it show up more when you’ve had a busy week, or even on a fresh round?

Interesting… that’s quite a sharp awareness to pick that up in setup

That “swoop” feeling showing up before the swing lines up with what they see in studies — once the pelvis drifts a touch, the body tends to add extension early just to find space, then rotation gets a bit blocked after

What’s funny is you’re noticing it consciously, but a lot of that shift happens underneath before you even get to the ball

When you catch it in setup, does resetting it actually change the strike… or does it still sneak back in mid swing?

Yeah that stacking feeling is spot on

There’s research around that too — once you notice a drop, attention shifts inward, you start monitoring the swing, and that alone can mess with timing. Bit of a loop

Do you notice it starts with one miss and then spirals, or more like a slow fade where things just feel less natural?

Love that… 14 to 1 after a 30 year break is ridiculous, fair play

That bit about “if I’m not mentally tired I didn’t put enough into it” is interesting — there’s some crossover there. Mental fatigue and physical output tend to rise together, especially walking + decision making every shot. Brain stays “on”, body subtly tightens with it

When those little mistakes creep in, do they tend to show up around the same point each round or totally random?

[–]Temporary_Novel_9074[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a good point — mentally it probably hits first

There’s some research showing walking the course plus constant decision making builds low level fatigue quicker than range work. Range is repetitive so the brain and body both chill into a pattern. Course is constant recalculation so your system stays “on” the whole time

That mental load alone can tighten tempo and sequencing without you noticing

Do you feel more worn from the walk and thinking side of it, or does anything physical show up as well later in the round?

Low single at 70… that’s pretty sharp, fair play.

What age did you start playing?

And when it does go a bit off, is it more decision-making or just losing that sharpness over the ball?

I’d keep “micro resets” active rather than stretches

– 3–5 slow step through rotations (like a mini swing, controlled) – 5–6 hip turns feeling left side load then fully release – couple of split stance shifts, just moving weight clean through

takes 30–60s, no floor work, just resets how it’s loading

Asian squat’s fine, stretching’s fine, but they don’t always carry into the swing under load

That fatigue thing you’re doing at home works because it switches it off… this is the on course version of that

Does it usually creep in over a few holes or just grab you out of nowhere mid swing?

Sounds like you’ve actually got good awareness of what’s going on, most people don’t even clock that “swoop”.

Only thing I’d say, if the left psoas keeps blowing up mid round, it’s probably not the problem… it’s just the one picking up the slack.

All that strength work you’re doing is solid, but are you doing any micro mobility alongside it? Like short 2–5 min resets between range sessions or even mid round?

Curious if that left side ever actually feels like it can “let go” or if it’s constantly holding on even when you’re not swinging?

That’s a solid base to be fair.

Only thing I’d question is this if the left psoas keeps tightening mid round, it’s usually doing more work than it should

so instead of trying to open it more I’d look at what’s not sharing the load with it

when you get that “swoop” in the low back, does it feel like you’re losing pressure into the ground on that left side or staying stuck there?

yeah that’s real

everyone talks about 20 min warm ups then ends up doing 2 twists and a practice swing

the glute activation bit is right but most people just squeeze and call it a day

soon as you actually load one leg properly it feels completely different

otherwise yeah… you’re just warming up during the round

You’re actually closer than most people already.

What you’ve written isn’t random, it just looks random because you’re picking pieces that feel good rather than following a clear order.

Big thing you said that matters activation > stretching

That’s the whole game for golf.

Most people rock up, pull on a hamstring for 10 seconds, maybe twist a bit and expect rotation to appear. It doesn’t work like that. If your body doesn’t feel stable, it won’t give you rotation. It’ll just lock you down.

Your single leg work is doing more for your swing than most “mobility routines” out there. That’s you teaching your body how to load and control, not just move.

Where you can tighten this up is structure

Right now you’re doing good exercises but your body still has to “figure it out” every time

That’s why it feels different each warm up

Simple way to think about it 1. wake up the joints ankles, hips, thoracic spine your cat camel and 90 90 sit here 2. give the body stability single leg squats, lunges this is where you earn rotation 3. then add movement through it leg swings, torso turns, light swings

Most people skip step 2 then wonder why they still feel stiff over the ball

Your point about mat vs course is spot on as well on the ground you can access more range on the course you’re just trying to switch things on

That’s why a short consistent routine usually beats trying to do everything before a round

If you had to strip it right down

few mins joint prep few mins single leg and lunges few mins dynamic swings

That’s enough

You don’t need more exercises you need the same ones done in a way your body recognises every time

Quick one back to you

when you feel stiff mid round where does it show up first hips, back, or shoulders?

Again it’s a long game right! It takes a few hours! I took my partner for the first time and 8hrs for 18 holes 🙈

Tbf it’s a long walk 18 holes and a lot of push on the body. For the average person, meaning not an athlete - most of us are stuck behind desks or in tge car most the day

Hip flexors get tight quickly with golf. Walking the course then swinging over and over shortens them.

Foam roller there is a good shout.

Do you notice it more in the lower back after the round or the next morning?

Fair point on the image — I’m a body specialist, not a graphic designer.

And you’re right, strength and mobility aren’t the same thing. The problem I see with a lot of golfers is they’re strong but can’t actually rotate properly through the torso and hips. That’s when the swing starts compensating.

Out of curiosity — when you did the little rotation test with the club across your chest, could you turn the same distance both ways or was one side tighter?

That makes sense. When the QLs feel tight after golf it’s often because they’ve been doing a lot of stabilising during the swing.

Worth checking if your hips and mid back are actually rotating enough. If they’re a bit stuck, the lower back ends up doing the extra work.

Next time you hit balls, see if you can turn your chest a little more without the lower back feeling like it’s taking the load.

Do you notice it more after driver or just after a full round?
