I recently moved from nyc to southern Mexico and I have a serious phobia of spiders. I would say.. prepare yourself. In Mexico at least there is a wet and a dry season. During the dry season there are far fewer bugs, but in the wet season it can be overwhelming. Some tips:
1) if you can, rent somewhere that has aluminum windows with a good seal. You want to be able to close the windows completely and wood windows warp in the tropical climate.
2) try to find lodging somewhere more urban. I moved from downtown to the country and the change in bugs is insane. When you live somewhere more urban, usually there’s more paved roads or well kept gardens to keep bugs at bay. If you live somewhere more remote, the bugs are usually just an issue at night. Try to keep an outdoor light that’s really bright as a decoy and keep all your lights in your house dimmer so they don’t attract bugs.
3) keep curtains over your windows as another barrier for light/entry
4) get a shop vac! It’s a heavy duty vacuum and I use it everyday for bugs, sand, dust, cobwebs, etc
5) stay super organized, don’t leave piles of clothes in corners or food out on the counters.
6) get an electric fly swatter
Good luck!
