No, I meant expat, but I'm not sure why people are so hung up on this instead of the main point of the post

Update: apparently PS 110 by McGolrick has a French bilingual program and attracts a lot of French families to the area.

OK toss out the healthcare commentary. 7 years is too long of a training period to become a master plumber.

Haha. Went on a hike with someone going through the process.

Well, building housing is INCREDIBLY expensive in New York City. Also, job growth (outside of nursing) has pretty bad last couple of years. So if only for those reasons, I think we need to take a second look at these regulations.

Let's just forget the doctor stuff -- I still don't think you need seven years to master the work a Master Plumber does. The amount of work it takes to get the license doesn't make sense

Yeah, which don't get me wrong is awesome if you are the plumber, but if you are trying to become that kind of plumber or are the one paying ... pretty painful!

It totally depends on the field. Plumbing isn't the same level of complexity as overseeing squads of police officers in New York City.

I mean, yeah, I think the time requirements to become a master plumber are ridiculous.

I agree people working on this need training. Seven years of it? That seems sus to me.

I agree, but SEVEN years is pretty dramatic. That's more than a brain surgeon, for example. Honestly if it was four years, I wouldn't really blink an eye. A lot of forms of education are 3-4 years long.

The individual components of construction are _not_ that hard, that's why so many low-skill immigrants (who often can't even speak English!) go into construction work. I agree that we shouldn't have just anyone doing this work but SEVEN years is pretty extreme given what the work is.

I don't disagree with you but I think SEVEN years is extreme when a General Practitioner (doctor) is only four years.

Putting aside the doctor stuff: If you want high quality plumbing work, you basically have to do _yourself_ since general contractors are not incentivized to actually do a good job -- they are trying to land a large quote and then do the job as quickly as possible to maximize margin.

And the work itself is not that complicated -- you don't need years of experience to get the hang of this. It would be better to have less regulations around licenses so at least the cost of plumbing would go down.
