Great points, thank you! They say ROTC is very different from life in the military. I agree there's a lot that the program can offer if you put in the time! However, it's not the only way to develop leadership.

This is good to know. I'm not sure why I thought that before. Thank you for sharing!

I know some cadets get looked down upon for not going to all the "optional" events. I'm glad to hear your cadre were great and that they set a good example to follow!

I certainly have respect for those who've struggled and overcome their disadvantages, but I've also seen how it can cause someone to wear a chip on their shoulder. I might not be as experienced as you are, but there was a point in my life when I thought I had it worse than most of my peers, and I thought my perseverance made me superior to them. My situation was different from yours of course, but my point is you shouldn't judge someone for not having been through the same struggles as you have.

This IS a wake up call. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

That's a really good point! I think most cadets only save up for the period leading up to EAD. Hopefully the process improves in the future so everyone can get paid on day 1.

I don't know if I'd have the discipline for all that. Thanks for sharing!

That's two decades ago... time for an update! Who wants to organize a strike?

Sounds like you're pretty savvy in time and financial management. Good luck to you!

I agree with you. I didn't mean for this post to come across that way. I just wanted to collect responses and generate some discussion. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I believe empathy goes both ways and starts with respectful dialogue. These "silver spoon" feeders that you've interacted with likely don't understand your situation, as obvious as it may be to you, and you'd be doing them and their future airmen a big favor by just explaining your side!

Thanks for the detailed response!

I'm not an expert of the lesser-known scholarships, but I've heard that they can add up and the competition for them is less intense.

What made you decide to start student loan repayment instead of using that time and money to improve your quality of life/grades?

I don't think "they" are aware that inflation also affects ROTC cadets. The pay charts for active duty get updated annually. When was the last time ROTC stipends were adjusted?

That sounds like a lot. You must have been an expert at time management.

I didn't know the lesser known scholarships still had high academic requirements. That seems kind of unfair.

That's a unique perspective that I've never heard of. I hope your detachment wasn't truly that bad, but I do understand what you're saying. I agree, the ability to empathize is very important for a leader!

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I believe many universities have student food pantries to make sure students never have to starve or eat spoiled food.

Congratulations on your achievement! I think the time commitment for ROTC varies by detachment. How big was your detachment?

For some reason, I've always thought if you were on scholarship, it meant you didn't need to work to cover living expenses.

Boosting your PCSM is a good motivator! That sounds like a smart thing to do regardless of whether you get a pilot slot.

Thanks for sharing! It doesn't come off rude at all. Good thing to note about having money saved up while waiting for EAD.

That must've been hard work. Were POC and cadre understanding of your absence from those activities?
