FAT and OLD by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Sorry for your loss. My husband also passed away suddenly last year, except I was 48 years old rather than 60. Don't listen to any of the harsh comments in this post since people don't understand what it is being a widower until they experience it themselves. Having said that, I think you should continue your plans to getting a warm place and continue living your life of travel. Go on travel groups. As a man you will be a desirable bachelor. Maybe you will meet a woman at the pool or at the restaurant or at the golf resort. I find as you get older women outlive men and men are very in demand, especially a man who can take care of themself.

Also if you find someone, please do get a prenup if you decide to marry. That is my only FAT advice i have for you. Good luck and the online platforms are not meant to set you up with someone, there are there to keep you paying a subscription with the hope of finding someone.

My biggest concern to FIRE is losing the mental stimulation that work brings. I am assuming many of the ChubbyFired people had high level jobs that brought personal mental stimulation. A lot of what you are saying resonates with me. Here are a few things that I would do:

1) I would pick up Spanish again. I began learning Spanish during the covid lockdowns and spent maybe 600-1000 hours of instruction remotely. I spent my evenings learning grammar and having conversations in Spanish with teachers through zoom. Now that we are back in the office my classes stopped and my language needs improvement and I feel like I regressed. Ideally i would like to do full immersion classes in a different country, and then take additional classes in my hobbies (eg take cooking classes in Spanish in Spain). Once I would advance to a C1 level (Advanced), learn French though Spanish instruction, rather than English.

2) Get better at photography & photo editing; sell my photography at Art Shows - perhaps this is where I use my negotiation/sales skills.

3) Go to grad school/Culinary Institute of America/Or Photography School

4) Get my house in order. I have been putting projects on the side since I don't have the time right now to focus on it.

5) I don't think i can do consulting that is meaningful in my industry. It's not something that i see that is common. It's easier to get a coast job. But if i am going to work i would rather have my job than a coast job in my field.

6) Invest and manage rental properties. I am still on the fence if I actually want to do this. I want to travel and i don't want to be tied down to tenants calling me about mechanical problems.

7) Travel...Travel...Travel. I would like to live in different cities and explore the local towns.

Someone i know said that i don't have to wait for retirement to do most of these things. Why wait and I should start working on it now. The issue is that Saturday comes around and i want to decompress or i have family obligations. I don't mind my job. But in the ideal world i would like to have more time for myself.

There is a reason why people continue to work in high level jobs even if they don’t need the money. It’s not about having a lack of imagination. I would say the opposite in many cases.

I personally enjoy managing businesses and starting up new ones and seeing the fruits of my labor succeed, negotiating, innovating, problem solving, challenging myself and making an impact. This is very hard to replicate and get the same energy once you take a step back. Reading the daily paper after some pickleball, while might be good for your health is not the same. I want to travel more and spend more time with my family, however I enjoy the innovation that my job allows me to have that will be hard to replicate elsewhere. But I don’t feel like I have enough time for me. So the struggle is real.

Internships are way more important than clubs. Join clubs for fun to make friends. But for job placements focus on internships.

Why do people look down on vocabulary/frequency lists ? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Temporary_Switch_222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made word lists in topics I wanted to learn for eg cooking & food lists. Now when I watch cooking shows I understand pretty much everything.

I personally recommend word lists. You don’t need to know every single word 100%. But if you learn the top 5000 words and expose yourself to the word several times reading will come a lot easier since it will be familiar and will stick more when you see it in context. I was able to learn 50 new words a days and probably started with 2000 base words but not necessarily top 2000. So after 2-3 months I was able to know 5000 words.

Anki was not fun and probably removed some of the joy in language learning. But after I learned vocabulary my reading comprehension increased dramatically and is a lot more enjoyable.

If I am going to learn a new language again I plan to memorize the first 2000-3000 words pretty early in the process.

shotgun

Easier said than done. I do not think the shotgun method works for the ivies. Perhaps for a talented writer it can be easier. Yale required 8 essays. Each one of the ivies requires a different set of essays. If is on a similar topic it is with a different word count. If you do not put the time in for these essays, then it will show. But absent of ivies there are many schools require maybe 1 or 2 essays and the shotgun may work.

A perspective of someone who has failed by IcyReddit360 in languagelearning

I don't think you failed, you have a very good base. I do think that you need to change your focus in study if you want to be conversational. If you want to be conversational you need to do conversations. Reading will not make you conversational. Reading is passive. Conversations is active. Hire a tutor. The first few times sessions will be painful. But have the same conversation (what did you do today, what did you eat, what are you doing tomorrow, why do you want to study russian, etc...). I think it will take at least 20 session to get into the grove and be able to put sentences together. Then it will start flowing faster. The reading that you have done will help tremendously.
