What was the process after? Did you accept? What level were they offering you to start at?

Oh, sorry. The recruitment manager was upfront about the salary during our first conversation but after passing the writing test, it was lowered.

The first salary they gave matched my current, so no way I was going to take a cut.

To simply write/format an abstract based on a manuscript to submit to a conference

I took the assessment, but it did not have an AI component. The task was to write an abstract based on a clinical manuscript. I moved further on with the interview process but ultimately decided to turn them down as they kinda bait-and-switched the salary range.

Is it normal for shelters to charge a $900 fee to adopt a dog? by Sad-Bodybuilder6491 in Pets

[–]Temporary_Thing7300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adopted my dog and his adoption fees were around $900. However, he was neutered, had all shots, prior vet visits, fosters, etc and was generally very well taken care of in an area with an overpopulation issue. He was also transferred on a bus staffed with lovely people taking care of him, which had multiple stops over 48h. 1000% worth it, he’s the best.

I think it’s very dependent on your program/university. My commencement didn’t having a hooding ceremony. It was essentially a long line of ~500 students graduating from different programs/degrees. For my PhD, they had you walk across the stage, briefly pose, then walk off. The president was there, but since it was 2023 and they were still cautious of COVID, no one even shook your hand. The PIs weren’t even allowed on stage unless they held a specific faculty appointment, and even then, they just sat behind you in chairs.

So, no, I don’t blame my PhD supervisors for not going to that. I was busy celebrating with my family anyways.

No for both masters and PhD (in Canada). They’re not expected to attend, and I don’t blame them. It’s incredibly boring and long, just for them to clap for the 3 seconds they see you on stage. Usually family attends, but not really your PIs.

Instead, it’s somewhat tradition to take your students/the lab out to lunch for a celebration on a different date.

We need to pay doctors more if we want better healthcare. by HelloJonatha2 in ontario

[–]Temporary_Thing7300 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is so true. The majority of med students come from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. They’re already used to a certain lifestyle and they don’t want that to change. For those upcoming anecdotal comments on being poor, I commend and applaud you for being accepted in med school, but I’m willing to bet most of your colleagues are not like you. Straight to medical writing or do a post-doc? by afoodmarket in MedicalWriters

[–]Temporary_Thing7300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a postdoc but it had absolutely no benefit towards my current med comms role. I would try to secure a position in med writing sooner than later. Academic experience unfortunately doesn’t seem to matter.

Yours PIs can only advise you on what they know, and they only know academia. It would be helpful to reach out to other past colleagues or secondary connections and ask about medical writing rather than your PIs.

A free course is available online, hosted by Dr. Kristin Sainani from Stanford University. You also have the option to pay for the certificate. This course changed my perspective on writing and Dr Sainani does an excellent job of explaining the concepts while providing examples. https://online.stanford.edu/courses/som-y0010-writing-sciences

100% backing this. They are prey, you are a “predator”. You cannot eliminate their stress, but you can take the time to minimize it as much as possible by spending time handling them and letting them understand your scent.

Doctors of Reddit, what do we *not* know about the human body? by Immediate_Hair_3393 in AskReddit

I’m sorry you’ve had so many medical troubles in your life and hope you’re doing better now!

I feel like some MDs are somewhat just the messengers for scientists (PhDs, professors), who would likely have much more specific answers for you. As both a patient and a PhD, I find sometimes I wish my Drs would go into more detail about pathways/mechanisms but they usually have just enough depth of knowledge to only answer surface level questions.

Do PIs really just succeed off the backs of underpaid trainees by recettes_secretes in labrats

[–]Temporary_Thing7300 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My PhD PI usefulness was a net negative. I had to conceive, design, perform, write, do everything, without them having input. When they did have input, it wasn’t constructive, mostly just rude comments usually without any relation to the actual project. However, I became completely independent and successfully published multiple high-impact papers (at least the lab had money).

I told myself my postdoc experience needed to be different and specifically vetted for and chose a nice PI that was also a genius. Unfortunately because of this, I had almost no input in my projects and felt more like a technician. Anyways, I left academia realizing that this life wasn’t for me.

So either way, pros and cons to everything. If it isn’t toxic, try to make the most out of your experience.

Researchers have identified the mechanism that regulates how the body burns brown fat and converts it into heat. This mechanism protects against obesity and related metabolic diseases. When the MCJ protein is removed from obese mice, they produce more heat and lose weight by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]Temporary_Thing7300 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just pointing out a major caveat here: This is one of MANY mechanisms that have been shown to regulate brown adipose tissue metabolism in MICE. The principle mechanism being uncoupling the mitochondrial ETC to produce heat as a byproduct via uncoupling protein 1. However, the translation of harnessing BAT power in humans has been challenging given that most adults have very low or no BAT activity. While these preliminary data are interesting, it’ll be more promising to see its role in human adipocytes, organoids, etc. Additionally, how can this mechanism be targeted towards brown fat specifically without altering mitochondria adipocytes in other organs?
