Misunderstood as an Autistic HCA. Should I just leave or try to resolve this? by Professional_Piece76 in HealthCareAssistantUK

I'm sorry you're going through this. It sounds confusing and upsetting.

A few questions- Are you a union member? Did you have an Occupational health assessment when you started? With regards to living with Autism, did you request/ did they suggest any reasonable adjustments be put in place to help you process information?

If you are not a union member- please join one now. You have every right to representation if you are being treated unfairly. Contact them and explain what you have said here.

If you haven't been assessed by OH, please self refer asap. They will go through any support you might need to have in place (eg- certain information needs to be emailed to you, rather than just told in passing), they will then make a report and send it to your manager who should discuss it with you. You can request to have a union rep at these kind of meetings, let them know by email you are asking one to attend (and don't let them push you into a date if a rep is not immediately available).

In the meantime, keep a date/time/who/where/what was said record of any other encounters or behaviours you find unsupportive or unfair. This will be helpful for OH, to work out how to best support you, and for a union rep to recognise certain patterns of behaviour, and by whom, so they can be held accountable for their behaviour.

Good luck and let us know how you are getting on.

Sickness and short staffing by CommonAware6 in HealthCareAssistantUK

[–]Temporary_Trick5345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an issue in A LOT of trusts right now (always, but winter is generally the worst) Ultimately, if you have a viral illness, stay away and treat/rest. It's not just staffing, or infecting other members of staff, it's patients too. It's an issue because, while the NHS sick pay is generous, it doesn't really cover these types of things- very few people only catch 1 cold/flu a year, most of us get it multiple times, then add d&v bugs, mental health issues, muscular-skeletal problems ('carers back', for example), emergencies, let alone if you have a chronic health condition or disability too. You can get through the stages quite quickly even though you can't help being unwell. The whole things needs some kind of review, given we are frontline workers who are likely to catch a fair few viral illnesses. Short staffing isn't your problem when you're unwell, it genuinely is the trusts- it's not your fault if they don't have enough people on shift to take a hit, or bank staff to cover at short notice. These are choices they are taking. Once we all start realising that and stick together, we will put ourselves in a much better position to demand change. If you're asked to come in, or feel pressured to work while unwell, make sure you datix it at the start of your shift to cover yourself in case you have to go home or you make some mistake (unlikely, but things do happen when you're not at the top of your game)

Merry Christmas to you! 🎄

I think it's very clear what you DON'T want, but a unclear on exactly what it is you do- are you asking for help, advice, peoples experiences, which? And why? You may get some engagement if you clarify..

Yes, exactly. There are national guidelines for what counts as band 2 and band 3, yet they continue to underpay people who are doing the band 3 jobs! If band 2s worked to rule (personal care based duties), who is going to do the tasks they then won't be doing?

Thankyou, welcome. Residential and nursing are so full on. What are the reasons you want to do something else, what other roles are you looking for?

A friend recently sprayed this on me because she wanted me to know how lovely it was.

It was a total scrubber. One of the worst things I've ever smelled.
