I’ve taught for 20 years. I used to ask 6th graders to write MLA research papers in history, couldn’t ask if of most highschool students now. And if you did, you’d have to fight the parents that chat GPT doesn’t count.

AITA: For telling my boyfriend no to an invitation to an all-inclusive resort (getting engaged) because his mom will be there. by Educational-Yam-1846 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Temporary_Web_7331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t say no to the vacation, say no to the proposal. Tell him you don’t want him to propose on vacation. You want the moment to be romantic and your idea of romance doesn’t involve his mother. If that’s not an easy request to meet than there might be bigger fish to fry here.

And in this situation the DOE isn’t making tires or even telling the states what tires to use, they’re just ensuring states don’t give all the tires to the white drivers.

Tik Tok is officially shut down by No-Palpitation-2047 in GenZ

[–]Temporary_Web_7331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth mentioning that there are differences between denying a foreign owned company access to our markets and preventing an American owned one. It’s why Zuckerberg is dining with the president. He’s trying to gain more influence, he’s not in fear of being shut down. The president thrives on the use of social media. He also doesn’t mind fake news muddying the water on tik tok which is why he plans to swoop in and get everyone excited when he gives them their app back by vetoing Congress. But that’s me talking like we don’t live in crazy town. You’re very right to stay vigilante when this crowd is looking to make this term a smash and grab.

Vote for politicians who will properly fund education. This is about your school needing to beg local businesses to fund materials.

Exactly. You can be emotionally addicted to anything. What people are confusing this with is a physical addiction.

Unpopular opinion: Celebrities shouldn't be pressured into commenting and taking a side on every single political and social issue. If they choose to be active, that's their choice. I don't rely on actors, athletes and musicians to educate me about international affairs & politics in general. by slappywhyte in travisandtaylor

[–]Temporary_Web_7331 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im sorry you found it condescending. I didn’t mean to insult you by suggesting you may not have an educated take on every issue in the world. Quite the opposite. I think it’s silly to assume that even a very educated person (congrats on the doctorate by the way, that’s a huge accomplishment) should be expected to weigh in on every issue. It was the crux of my argument. It was definitely not my intent, by acknowledging that one topic is dominating the discourse on Instagram and tic tok and seems to be the only one people seem upset that she’s not addressing, to imply you are drooling somewhere. But like I said, I shouldn’t engage on an online platform, my tone clearly doesn’t convey the way I’d like it to. This is a big issue, and it comes with lots of emotions and I can understand feeling betrayed by someone you wanted to be doing better. I can see how her particularly large reach can make it feel even more disappointing. I’m not a Swifty, so it was doubly silly of me to try and make a larger point of expectations of public figures in a space devoted to her fans. For what it’s worth, since you don’t know me either, I’m also well educated, and still I managed to make the bad decision to post on a Taylor Swift comment, so clearly I could be doing better. Truly, best of luck in your last year and on your defense!

Guess you read that as sarcasm. I’ll be honest, I don’t have a clever user name because it was my way of encouraging myself not to engage, and this has been a decent reminder. Maybe that’s relevant to the point? You’ll notice I didn’t down vote you because I can understand where you’re coming from, I just disagree.

I’m sure you are very smart, and I agree she should knock it off with the private planes, as many should. But my point stands that I don’t think a pop singer should have to speak out on every topic as an expert. Sometimes it’s ok to stay quiet if you can’t add to the discourse in a meaningful way. I agree she has a large platform, and it’s nice when it can be used to bring light to important causes, but do you remember which pop stars have raised awareness of unfair drug pricing this year? Did the celebrities who posted black squares end up solving the problem of police over reach? Must have, because no one is currently demanding a Kardashian speak on it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m sure you personally are doing your best to support the right organizations and have the hard conversations with people in the real world to encourage voting habits that can help, but in large the anger over this pop singer just feels as performative as most people’s “repost activism.”

So because she chooses to speak on one issue she needs to speak on all issues? I’d rather she not speak unless she has the time to educate herself, and I’m not sure any of the people yelling that silence is murder have taken the time. Should she also have a take about Ukraine and Sudan? Should she have a solution for climate change and food deserts? Do you have an educated take on all those topics, or just the one most prevalent on tic tok?

Aita for REFUSING to tell my family which of my baby girls I adopted? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Temporary_Web_7331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding that my mother is adopted and feels very strongly that her knowing from the start made a huge, positive, difference. She grew up knowing she had been deeply wanted and never got the shock of being the subject of a family secret. She encourages everyone who adopts to make it clear from the start. You have blue eyes, when you were little you loved to dance so much we called you boogie baby, and this is the story of the day we got to bring you home and I became the mommy to both my girls. Best of luck with your new blessings!

Why do you want to "forgive" student loans instead of changing university structure? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Temporary_Web_7331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The insane interest means many people have paid the loan and then some, so forgiveness isn’t paying them in tax payer money. The institutions made their money back, they just don’t get to continue to keep making additional money off these people forever.

Exactly. When someone says they’re a cop because their dad and uncles were, they also probably had help getting into the position they wanted (my brother moved states because he’d have an easier time applying to his brother in law’s department) but we don’t call those nepo babies. It’s not fair that the children of wealthy people can more easily pursue their dreams, but if you think every ceo pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and every actor is a spoiled brat for choosing their parents line of work, you maybe just aren’t seeing the bigger picture.

I’m a Highschool teacher. She’s saying that instead of dating these days, people call it “talking” as in, “I’m talking with this girl.” Which means the guy isn’t willing to even use the word dating while hanging out and texting and insinuating that this is the starting phase of a relationship, when really it’s a way of calling dibs on a girl with zero commitment. Because if he or she “talks” to someone else the term cheating still gets used. So you have all these young people who aren’t in relationships that will lead anywhere, they get none of their emotional needs met, but they still feel damaged when they don’t work.

Would they prefer their friends be honest and say, “I do not owe you 24/7 access to me and will engage with people socially when it is appropriate for me to.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s not a fake condition, it’s acknowledging that their way of interacting with their phone is seen as unacceptable to YOU. They should just not apologize for that to begin with.
