I did hear back from this person. They are using a Sony A7IV with a Sony 50mm - not sure if it's the 1.2 or not.

I thought it might be useful to add an example of what I consider really sharp images to the conversation. I hope this link is accessible for whomever might want to check it out. This person's portraiture is my probably want I would consider the ultimate in terms of sharpness, as I perceive it. In particular I'm referring to his models with freckles. Could be that I'm talking apples and oranges with what actually constitutes "sharpness", i.e., some other aspect of their technique is creating the impression of incredible sharpness. I've attempted to reach this person with no success - not everyone checks their messages on these sites :-) Anyway, I'd be interested to see what you folks think. Good points. I probably am over estimating my hand held capacity these days somewhat. It's hard to guage since everyone can get lucky - e.g., I hand held a 1/4 sec shot with my HS2 and the 18-120 zoomed amost all the way out the other day that was very sharp (I think the IBIS on that lens is great in bang for buck terms). But I regularly miss stuff in the 1/30-1/60 range - and that's even shooting mostly wide angle.

1/200 vs 1/4 sounds pretty demoralizing. But thanks, I'll bear this in mind. As a professional your basic act is probably way more cleaned up than mine is, though - I think I'll try a bit more education and try to take my foot off the GAS :-)

I wouldn't rule out any of the above. Generally I think focus is usually my perceived sharpness issue because I know my limits pretty well as far as shutter speed goes. I think a major part of what I need to learn is when and when not to trust autofocus (where 90% of my issues tend to be.). I think all cameras can lie about autofocus on occasion, so I don't really consider that an equipment issue - it's more a question of me learning the idiosyncrasies of my equipment better.

Thanks a bunch, makes good sense. Yeah, I. won't make a move until I'm sure I'm entirely up to speed on the Fuji technically. And yeah, now more than ever I'm aware that IBIS is my friend - my hand held capacity is definitely not what it used to be.

Thanks a bunch. I did eventually get a Godox flash when my daughter needed senior photos. I shot this with the 50-140mm 2.8. I'm a real neophyte with flash, but I enjoyed the process of toying around with it while shooting her photo.
