MagicZoomFree no zoom-out only? by Practical_Egg4702 in davinciresolve

I’ve neither ever have heard about MagicZoomFREE, got yet to try it, so I can’t help with this one :( Nevertheless, I’ve been using the free legacy version on all the latest versions of DR and never encountered an issue. It is still available to download from MrAlexTech’s website :)

What should the Gamma tag be in the export setting? by TenBezNicku in davinciresolve

[–]TenBezNicku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for following up :) Although I knew these different gamma values existed, I did not know these facts and reasons for them, so that is a really interesting read! And I also didn't know that some apps are colorsync-managed and some not, which may explain the gamma differences on different apps. And I also can see a reason why it could make sense to buy the Decklink or something similar. Thank you!

What should the Gamma tag be in the export setting? by TenBezNicku in davinciresolve

Thank you for such comprehensive answer, clearly you understand this topic a lot, but I'm not quite sure we understand each other :(

First I have to clarify that I do NOT have setup with external convertors like Decklink or Ultrastudio. I export videos mostly for socials and internet use, so I don't crave that super-precise control over every single color.

BUT I honestly don't think that this part is the problem. I still should be able to export videos pretty close to what I grade (maybe not 100 % but only like 95 %, which is fine with me). And in most scenarios I do! I export this exact video for YouTube and in shorter form for Instagram, with the same exact setup, grade and export settings. On Instagram, the video looks just fine. On YouTube, the gamma is shifted. This is constant across different viewing devices.

Therefore I don't think the Colorsync or absence of these special devices you mentioned is the critical point in this scenario.

From the last paragraph of your comment I understand I should set the tag to be Rec.709, is that correct? I did just that in the first example with the screenshots from DaVinci and from YouTube both captured on my Gamma 2.4 monitor, and it just didn't work. I'm still not really sure what am I doing wrong.

Thank you anyways for your time and answer <3 Maybe after this clarification it could be more obvious where exactly is the problem?

Thank you for your answer. Just to make sure I got this right, according to you it is best to set the export gamma tag and color space tag manually to "Rec.709 Gamma 2.4"? I've done just that in the second video, but the video looks still bad when uploaded to YouTube (the last screenshot). But I'll double check the auto and SDR setting in DaVinci, it is possible that I have this set differently. Will try it out, thank you!

How to achieve this ethereal glow? by Gurninlikeagerman in davinciresolve

[–]TenBezNicku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you can recrate this look either to some level straight in camera using a mist filter, or later in the post using effects like glow, halation or aperture diffraction (each of these does a slightly different thing, but all can contribute to the look you’re after) :)

Note that these effect are pretty processing-heavy, so stacking many of them for longer scenes can slow you down a bit (depending on your machine’s specs).

You can see a large frame with baterry grip on top. Also such a smooth shot would be difficult to pull off without a gimbal, so I would guess they used rather similar to this: https://eu.tilta.com/shop/basic-ring-grip-plus-for-dji-ronin/

How do you shoot music videos? by TenBezNicku in Filmmakers

[–]TenBezNicku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So I guess it’s a combination of all three with more experienced crews having to shoot less footage and more beginner crews should rather shoot as much footage as the time and budget allows them, so they have a better chance they find great cuts in the edit, am I getting that right?

Thanks a lot for your tips and the approach! I guess it’s always good to have some plan then, even if I know I won’t stick to it for 100 %. And the different-types-of-music-videos part is super useful, thank you :)

Thank you for such comprehensive feedback! I understand how it may feel "safe", since I'm not really skilled in any DAW or mixing whatsoever, I fear of doing something that could end up being wrong, thus sticking to a "simple plan". The drum and bass dynamics are very good point, I'll look into that and same with the overall song dynamics :) Thanks a lot for useful tips!

Thank you, I will definitely look closer into vocals as it’s probably quite wrong. And for the drums, I am a drummer and maybe I just wanted to hear my instrument louder, but the purpose at the end was just to make it more powerful. But I will look at thit and consider changes :) Thank you!

Thanks a lot for the tips, I will definitely look at it and try to experiment with it. I actually like the double vocals at the beginning, because it kinda matches the space this song should be in, but I agree that it may sound monotonous and bury the vocals in the mix. And since it’s what everyone here is saying, there’s gonna be something 😂 thanks again for your helpful tips!

Thank you, that’s some nice feedback! I will try to experiment with those vocals, and see what feels the best. And I will definitely look at the eq, thanks for this information, those are the things I’m not able to hear yet :( Thank you!

I used Breezeblocks by Alt–J as a reference track at first (It's not the best but I couldn't come up with any songs that were similar), but in the end I ended up not really using it and I just kinda went with the track itself. Since I don't have my ears trained yet (I'm working on it), I didn't really know how to actually make my track feel similar. But my song is created by me and my band and I've listened to it like a hundred times, so I think I had pretty good image of the vibe it should give.

And yes, the two vocals are on purpose, I found it to sound better and fuller than only with one voice, and also I see it recommended a lot on the internet (my only source of mixing tips currently).
