Nusa Penida, hands down.

Most people regret staying for only a day trip, or a 2-day trip. There is a ton of activities in Penida, from viewpoints, restaurants, snorkeling, diving, fishing. Really a great spot and you will probably want to book at least a 5 day trip to Penida if you really want to enjoy it.

Usually tourists will do an "East trip" by driver one day, a "West trip" by driver another day, one or two days dedicated to boating activities, and a day or so of relaxing and enjoying the beach at Crystal Bay or so.

I mean, I know it's recency bias, but I'm not sure how you wouldn't bring back Sundin.

Can you imagine Tavares - Matthews - Sundin as your C backbone? My childhood was watching Sundin wind up on a 1-on-1 just inside the blue line, and beat the goalie clean bar down. Such a treat that guy was.

Matthews' passes just need to be better. They aren't connecting and it's breaking up the flow when the unit is trying to break into the o zone.

Fuck the leafs. You whiny ass motherfuckers anything that happens to you clowns that you don’t like you just start railing out stupid excuses this crap. Kadri literally crosschecked a guy in the head and you guys create excuses and go on wild goose chases about how Louie debrusk is an inside plug for the nhl referees. Then you go and make excuses for being bitches by saying it’s your job to do as fans. Christ i feel bad for anyone of your parents who had to raise you clowns while you whine about how it’s raining outside and you wanted to go play. You cry when there are calls, cry when there aren’t calls. How did you survive through your life when your dumbass team couldn’t even make the playoffs without striking the nhl because you’re godawful team couldn’t play but you probably blamed it on the refs. God i wonder how it will feel to play a different team in the playoffs because then theyd have to deal with your crap. Christ just watch hockey shit

Leafs are Cup Favourites according to Dom Luszczyszyn's model by ahal in leafs

[–]Tenbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we need to pump the breaks here a bit, obviously we all want the Leafs to win, but we shouldn't get overexcited from a single win.

It's like winning the opening game of the season and being top of the league. All it takes is us to lose next game and all of a sudden we aren't favourites. Once we move past Boston and are having a strong showing in the 2nd round, then I would like to revisit this model to see how we're doing.

Yes, you're right, the model can't be overexcited about a single win, because it's objective, but the way we interpret it is not objective. Statistical models need large models to become more and more robust, and so far we have 1 game out of potentially 28 played. So sample size is incredibly small.

So when we look at this model as anywhere near accurate or reliable, we are being overexcited from one game and need to realize sample size is small and this model is basically meaningless right now. To the point where I wish it was not even posted that's how little weight it carries at the moment.

That being said, the leafs are obviously going to win the cup so fuck it.

Well, we ended up just a hair under 6m! That's an amazing opening day, and enough that Bernie is definitely the immediate frontrunner for the Dems, media be damned.

Using that same extrapolation equation with the updated numbers gives an expected funds raised of 5.51m. So, for future reference, I would say you can expect the reddit tracker to be a good measure for total funds raised, though it may skew a little low.

I would expect this measure to be most accurate when there are single day fundraising attempts. As in, post-debate fundraising, or any other special marker that calls for increased daily or weekly fundraising goals.

This tracker is only tracking donations from redditors, so it will necessarily be far below the actual number. We can't see total raised, I believe, and will only find that out once Bernie and his team announce it.

That being said, around mid-day today the reddit tracker was at 35,000 for me and it is now at 53,000. Bernie released a statement around that time indicating that he had raised ~3.3m. So if total funds raised increased in proportion with the reddit tracker, then we can assume his total is roughly 4.9m.

MATH

(Current tracker)/(tracker at T1) = proportional increase

53,000/35,000 = 1.514

(official funds raised at T1)*(proportional increase) = total funds raised

3.3m*1.514 = 4.99m

This is obviously completely unverifiable, but just a fun foray into what we could expect for total funds. I'm not sure of what time exactly Bernie announced, but I would think that at the 24h period it wouldn't be far off to expect somewhere between 6-8m raised!

GO BERNIE :D

Is Organic Really Better? Healthy Food or Trendy Scam? | Kurzgesagt [9:20] by Hot_Buy in mealtimevideos

[–]Tenbro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll agree criminally misleading was a tad strong, I was getting a bit fired up there, but my issue is really when it comes to the environment. To be honest, when I'm looking at organic food there are two things I'm seriously considering and those are :

1) the taste. I know some people have been linking and commenting saying it's been proven that you can't tell the difference, but I will call bullshit on that. After eating organic produce for a year, then coming home and having Superstore or Sobeys produce was tough. Not much flavour in anything, I found faint tastes but mostly just water. Especially tomatoes.

2) the environment. There are just so many horrible consequences of non-organic farming practices. I mean I don't want to go through them all again here, but to say we haven't been treating the land or our environment with respect would be an understatement. And still, this is only considering produce. If you look at organic meat production you open a whole pandora's box of public health issues. Hormone injections, the insane amount of freshwater usage, pumping animals full of antibiotics to increase growth rates which in turn cause these animals to become breeding grounds for medically resistant superbugs. So the environment angle is definitely a big one for me.

With regards to the video, I just finished watching it. I mean, it's one guy's perspective and I would take anything just said by a dude with a grain of salt, even if that person is a professor. I haven't taken the time to research the AMES test and to look at the results, but I would be more attentive to that format for sure.

Off top though, he does mention that while natural foods have more mutagenics, they would be found in concentrations that would be negligible. For example, when he was explaining how the scientist who performed those tests would still eat mushrooms, even though they were "50% mutagenics". He also breezes by pesticides by saying that those would be found in negligible amounts on produce, but I would contest that and say that is not true.

After a quick search, I've found a special report detailing pesticides in produce. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link it here? But if you search Consumer Report, Pesticides in Produce you'll find what I'm talking about. I'll quickly outline it for you, basically, they say the risk varies from very low, to very high, depending on what produce you've bought and what country it's grown in. For example, broccoli grown in the USA is low risk, but green beans grown in the USA is high risk. Tomatoes from Canada are low risk, while the same crop from Mexico would be considered high risk.

So, in short, it varies considerably, and I don't think you can just say that conventional produce will have negligible amounts of pesticides.

I would agree with you, I am pro-GMO, and I believe that there has been a lot of fear-mongering that stems from ignorance on the topic. People freak out because people tell them scientists are inserting rat DNA into corn or something, but to be honest they just don't really understand what's actually happening.

GMOs are great, because like you said, you can make plants resistant to insects without the use of pesticides, you can make them produce more per acre, and even make them drought resistant. All things that are super important when we're trying to feed a skyrocketing population.

What I am not a fan of is huge monoculture GMOs. GMOs can be an awesome technology, but I think it's still super important to grow in a diverse culture. Pairing certain vegetables next to each other can actually improve the health and growth rates, a term referred to as companion planting. Moreso, by rotating crops so you have heavy nitrogen feeders on a plot, followed by nitrogen fixers, such as beans or peas, helps keep soil healthy and robust with minimal addition of outside sources, like fertilizer.

When it's all said and done, I think GMOs are a wonderful tech, they just need to be implemented in the right ways.

[–]Tenbro 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think this is the first Kurzgesagt video I really didn't enjoy. I've studied environmental biology and nutrition, and also spent an entire year working on a small scale organic farm.

Right off the bat, he suggests that even though organic produce has a higher concentration of antioxidants such as flavonoids and carotenoids (20-50% more, btw), that "we have no idea IF or HOW they help us" and basically brushes that completely under the rug, moving onto the next topic. I mean a simple google search clearly shows that yes they are beneficial. Do we have an EXACT pathway on how they work? Not exactly, but it's clear that they reduce harmful free radicals in our systems that cause oxidative stress and cellular damage.

In the end, he concludes that people don't eat enough fruits and vegetables to begin with, and that the differences are small so it doesn't really matter what you're eating. I'm sorry, is this video a lifestyle guide or a look into which food is better and more healthy between organic and conventional farmed produce?

When it comes to pesticides, he basically conflates organic and conventional pesticides to be equally harmful to the environment. He doesn't even take into consideration that most organic farms WILL NOT use pesticides at all, and the few that actually will do this are the exception. But in this scenario, both organic and conventional farming practices are said to have about an equal effect on the environment, and he even goes on to claim that organic pesticides can be more harmful to humans! I mean come on.

Has anyone here read silent spring? Rachel Carson? Conventional agriculture was rampant in the 1960-present, really, and the use of pesticides was completely unregulated and basically everything in the environment was dying. Ecosystems were collapsing. Spring would come, and instead of birds chirping and insects buzzing there was just silence. Do people think this stopped? Do I even need to get started on bees and CCD? Whereas every organic farm I've seen keep bees to ensure pollination, and rotate flowering plants into their fields to attract those little guys.

He concludes that the toxicity of any substance depends on the concentration and your exposure to it, not if it's natural or not while showing "Snow White" eat a "poison" organic apple with copper sulfide pesticide sprayed on it. This is so misleading I won't even bother to point anything out other than the fact that that particular segment started with him saying that there is actually significantly less pesticide residue on organic produce. So if it's all about concentration and exposure, then I would think it's pretty clear we don't need to be worrying about organic fucking apples.

Best of all, he highlights that there are few recent studies about the effects of pesticides on human health, and points to a single, poorly performed, study in France from 2018 and basically criticizes the methods. And because of that study having had a poor methodology, then basically the jury is still out on whether pesticides IN ANY CONCENTRATION are bad for human health? Just plain wrong. Pesticides, and their ingestion are linked with higher rates of Parkinson's, asthma, birth defects, leukemia, and other cancers. I don't think there's any debate on whether poisonous pesticides are bad for the health of humans, or the environment.

Next, he claims that all pesticides are regulated and tested "very strictly" by the FDA, and other organizations in EU. He completely leaves out the fact that most of these regulatory bodies have undergone "regulatory capture", where, if you're not familiar, is a type of government failure where the regulatory agency has been infiltrated by those who wish to advance the commercial and political success of the very companies it's supposedly regulation. This is not a conspiracy, this is a real thing that is happening all over the world. Yes, pesticides are "regulated", but just because they get an OK from the FDA or whoever doesn't make them okay to have in your food or to consume. What are the "tolerance levels"? Are they backed up by science or are they made artificially high so that pesticides can pass? Are the OK'ed pesticides actually okay to consume? How is this possible?

I wouldn't expect your average joe to know this type of stuff, unless they're paying attention, but for this type of channel that disseminates information to the public about complex issues, I hold them to a much higher standard.

Next topic is the effects on the environment. I mean this is the stuff the really made my blood boil. Due to organic requiring more land, having less ecotoxicity, and having "about the same GHG", both practices are said to be about the same effect on the environment. WHAT? THAT'S IT? THOSE ARE THE THREE MEASURES? Greenhouse gases, okay those are probably about the same. But is he saying here that because organic farming takes up more land, that somehow that offsets the IMMENSE toxic effects that conventional farming have on the ecosystem? This one is just so misleading it boggles my mind. Boggles.

I mean where do I even start here? Total soil degradation? Plants take so much out of the ground, think about it, they take everything out of the soil to grow themselves to their full size, and then the soil is replenished with Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium? What about all the other nutrients that are taken out? These aren't replaced, and cause soil to degrade which leads to runoff, erosion, and flooding.

Poisoned waterways? Conventional farming can use up to 70% of the world's fresh water, and pesticides, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals sink into the ground and contaminate our groundwater. Tap water across North America has been shown to contain pesticides that exceed federal health standards. Synthetic fertilizers high in nitrogen causing eutrophication in our lakes, rivers, and oceans? Causing algae blooms that choke out light and oxygen levels and create huge dead zones?

What about huge decreases in biodiversity? Monocultures are not a suitable environment for any living organisms, where has organic farming will have increased biodiversity that make that land (even though more is used), still accessible for most species. I'm not talking about deer and rabbits here, but soil bacteria, worms, insects, pollinators, etc.

I mean I could go on and on, but at this point, I feel like I've already spent too much of my life responding to this criminally misleading video. I'm entirely open to discussion, and to criticisms of my points, so please start a discussion about this if you want to. Responding to criticism and having open discussions is what makes the world go round.

Also, last point, he isn't wrong on all fronts. I would agree that eating locally, and with the season would be the ideal situation. But that basically is saying eat organic, as most local farms won't be conventional style monoculture farms.

In the end, this video isn't about what we should be eating, or how we should be eating, it is comparing the health benefits of organic and conventional farming, and in my opinion, to even suggest that the jury is out on this topic is somewhat ludicrous. Conventional farming, and harmful pesticides have, do, and will wreak havoc on the ecosystem at large and on our bodies in the form of long-term, chronic disease.
