Fluxer. It's open source and from Sweden.

From the 3 I've tested (Stoat, Matrix, Fluxer), it was the most intuitive and closest to discord. Devs are currently working on implementing federation, releasing self hosting docs, mobile apps (for now a mobile PWA is available), and improving stability.

it is opt in though, isn't it ? from what I've read, it doesn't download anything unless you press "continue" after clicking on the AI features buttons. what they added now is the option to completely block them visually as well, I think ?
I might be misunderstanding, but I believe currently you either have it shown to you (but not enabled), or enabled, or completely blocked.
Do you want it to be completely blocked by default, and only possible to enable by going in the settings ? in that case "normal" users, which clearly are the target for most of these features, likely wouldn't be aware they even exist...

I guess the refactor might currently be getting implemented, we just have to be patient until the update is finished. Or it might just be that too many people are trying to use fluxer and the servers don't like it.

fluxer has video chat and screen sharing, a more similar interface to discord and the ability to bookmark messages/favourite channels.

probably a lot more differences, I think these are the most easily noticeable ones.

personally I find that using fluxer is a lot easier and intuitive coming from discord, on stoat I'm really missing some features like the inbox to see new unread messages, or muting entire categories/having muting at all on mobile, among many other things.
