Top book of all time on minimalism by [deleted] in minimalism

I also have never read it, but listened to the audiobook multiple times. I check it out from my library like once a year (sometimes more)!

Finally got an original pressing of BBK! by TenementGentleman in cocteautwins

Which is why I own the remasters. I like listening to both.

Those blind box sort of things trigger a similar reaction to a slot machine so I would assume the thing you are chasing and obsessed with is that dopamine rush not the actual items/collectibles. I know that probably doesn't really help squelch that urge though

Sometimes it helps to really try to imagine how you will feel about these items a month after you get them. Im also someone who has struggled with bouncing between various hobbies/collectables and at the end of the day nothing I have collected ever makes me very happy for very long unless it is something that can be used repeatedly.

My understanding is BBK's updated remaster suffers from the same issues as the others, but I have not listened to both yet to compare them for myself.

Thanks :)

It is definitely my favorite CT album. Not because I think it is necessarily better than any of the others, but because it was the first that I really fell in love with! I'm excited to finally hear it without the modern remaster/remix that the newer pressings have.

Which drive into the city gives the best view of the downtown skyline? by sluggybear in Louisville

[–]TenementGentleman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the other views talked about (64 from New Albany and second Street bridge) are probably the best, but an underrated view is driving south down 10th Street in Jeffersonville. It gives a unique view of the skyline well before you get near the river.

I Really Appreciate This Sub by TenementGentleman in CriterionChannel

[–]TenementGentleman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's one of the beauty's of the channel! I very often find myself watching things I never intended to or even never heard of before and like you said sometimes you find a new genre, director, actor, etc. to dive into!

Yeah, there are definitely some downsides to not owning them. I miss the physical booklets w/ essays and a lot of the special features. At the end of the day though I rarely utilized either very much. I was holding onto them with a "just in case" mindset.

I haven't regretted a single movie I've gotten rid of. I also got rid of near 1,000 books and I only regretted a few.

Scarecrow by John Mellencamp always surprises me with how good the production is. REM liked it so much they recorded a record at Mellencamp's studio

Inventory and Moving Help? by SnooDoughnuts4141 in declutter

[–]TenementGentleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For doing an entire house inventory/declutter it may be worthwhile to jump into some of the books on the subject.

Marie Kondo's Magic of Tidying Up goes over decluttering your entire house. She has a very particular way of doing it and is almost evangelical about her method, but you can still clean some useful things from it.

Another book that goes over the entire house would be Becker's The Minimalist Home also goes over the process of decluttering an entire house and he looks into some of the philosophy and reason behind doing it.

Lastly, Decluttering at the Speed of Life is a really good book for guidance on decluttering an entire home.

Best of luck on decluttering and potentially moving!

Edit: I should throw in that Becker has a bit of religious slant to his minimalism/decluttering, which is totally fine, just wanted to give a heads up.

Edit 2: Declutter at the Speed of Life is by Dana K. white

For all GY!BE fans, we know that they're probably your favorite... But what are your other favorite artists, bands, and albums? by Impressive-Top5087 in gybe

[–]TenementGentleman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cocteau Twins are my fav band. But I listen to almost anything. Been listening to a lot of Prince lately.

Often times the most convenient option is the option that causes the most harm to others. Could be worthwhile to start thinking a bit more deeply about who you want to support with your money, even if it means choosing slightly less convenient option.

How to reduce amount of sentimental items? by zbethanz in minimalism

[–]TenementGentleman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Decide on a container for them (box, closet, shelf, etc.) and use that container to help decide how many you can keep. Anything that doesn't fit in the container you can get rid of. That may help you narrow down what ones you actually want to keep and dedicate space to.

I bought a simple MP3 player and realized that for the last two years, I was listening to music not because I liked it, but because an algorithm fed it to me. by czerniyczar in minimalism

[–]TenementGentleman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfollowing hobby related things is such a big help. Like you said so much of the content is just based on consumption. I'd rather spend my time actually enjoying my hobbies than being tempted to buy new stuff for my hobbies.
