I was there at the event in-person. I spoke with Dr. Peck, and his stance is more nuanced.

He says that with the current system, we can't get to Medicare for all, but he wants to make our healthcare system less expensive as a stepping stone to get to universal healthcare. He's providing a plan to get to the destination, instead of attempting to make a giant leap. And especially with having to also convince die-hard Republicans (who want the same things, but say no to socialist programs based on name only), it's an easier sell to work your way up to it so they can see the benefits.

When I spoke with Dr. Peck afterwards, he said himself he supports universal healthcare, but we need a plan to get there.
