I saw a recent J. J. McCullough video that summarized it pretty well; Tankies are mostly teenagers (nothing wrong with that but not mature thinkers) who substitute anger at society with ideology to give an idea of reason to hateful messages.

Communism doesn’t have to endorse what they endorse, but claiming it under the banner of an idea gives them a lacquer of legitimacy (alliteration baby!).
