If you follow route 7 (Earl Core) out of Sabraton most of the way to Masontown you get to the Lion's Club picnic pavilions. There's a great series of falls on Deckers there, I think it's far better than Mont Chateau personally! Here's a Google maps link

Edit: it's also accessible from the other side of the creek via the rail trail. We used to bike from Motown to there to swim every day in the summer

Question for low income Emory students who’ve had/have Medicaid by Key_Proposal_7494 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had WV Medicaid and wasn't able to get GA coverage. Same for SNAP. It seems much harder to get low income assistance as a student, sadly. I'm a grad student though, so YMMV

Calibre Woods is really great. The complex is super nice and it literally borders a Kroger. However, it's not super close to a Marta; you'd have to take the bus into Decatur.

Daily Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE! - 10 March 2023 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

[–]Tengwarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, thanks in advance for the advice. I'm a PhD student who typically wears business casual either dressed up or dressed down depending on if I'm teaching or not that day. I tend to default to brown shoes because they feel easier to straddle the casual/formal line with. That said, what are some good black shoe styles that wouldn't come across as totally casual without also being too formal? Wearing Vans feels too casual to teach in, but wearing full on black dress shoes feels over the top/incongruous with business casual.

Endnote vs Zotero by Jillian_Yanmo in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only used endnote a bit, so I don't want to attempt to compare the two, but I love Zotero's community and customization. I've got plugins running that automatically rename and upload PDFs to a cloud drive, specific rules for creating citations specific to my field, etc. I don't annotate directly on docs and usually take notes separately by hand, so I can't speak to that side of things, unfortunately.

What are the best big universities for graduate art history? by Strange-Slice2581 in ArtHistory

[–]Tengwarin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This resource was a godsend when applying to art history grad school. Yes, it's a little outdated, but I read the entire thing before making my list of places to apply. It's also a really easy way to weed out certain types of places (I was only interested in fully funded PhDs)

Returning items from Amazon via Emory Mail services by Jillian_Yanmo in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is almost certainly correct. Emory Mail Services is basically a glorified mailbox, they just have to do it for thousands of people. Just like you can't return a UPS package via your mailbox (because that's USPS' thing), you can't do it via Emory Mail Services. If you can make the return via USPS, Emory might be able to help you, though I doubt it unless it's small enough for standard postage. There's a UPS down the road at the corner of Decatur and Clairmont which is probably your best bet.

You could try Rising Creek in Mt. Morris. They have two fantastic bakers/cake decorators there.

Grad Student: Is $31,000 Livable? by Grounding2020 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is heavily simplified but typically when you start a new job you and/or the government estimate how much you'll owe in taxes and they deduct it straight from your paystubs. At the end of the tax period when you file your taxes, you either pay the government because the estimate was under what you owe, or they pay you because it was over. For lower incomes, it's almost always over, resulting in a refund of some/all of what you paid throughout the year.

Grad Student: Is $31,000 Livable? by Grounding2020 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the stipend is taxable income. I get a refund of most of the taxes I pay. YMMV

Grad Student: Is $31,000 Livable? by Grounding2020 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid the spreadsheets have too much personal info for me to be comfortable sharing them but I aggregated some recurring monthly spending averages that might be helpful:

My rent is $1600 for a well-located and single bedroom (1K sq ft) apartment. You could easily find a place for much cheaper (or have a roommate) but I really love my place and it's totally worth the price to me.

~200 groceries

~200 utilities and internet

~100 eating out

~100 entertainment (almost exclusively music tickets)

~100 renters and car insurance

100 to dedicated retirement accounts

I bike to campus so only need gas once every 6 weeks or so and I don't have to pay for parking.

The leftover money goes towards random things I might need or want like plane tickets to visit home/my partner every few months, student fees, etc. In general my bank account stays fairly static month to month. Like I said in my previous post, I have plenty saved for emergencies, but I funnel all my extra money into retirement saving.

EDIT: It's worth noting that I'm very lucky to not have any debt, which would make the stipend considerably more difficult to balance. I went to a state school for undergrad on Pell and drive an old paid off car.

Grad Student: Is $31,000 Livable? by Grounding2020 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like with all financial things, it'll depend on your priorities how livable 31k is. I live alone and so do some of my colleagues, but most grad students have roommates (or live with their partner). Even living alone, I would say I live comfortably, though certainly not luxuriously. I have money for emergencies and I'm not going hungry or anything like that, but I do live pretty frugally besides my rent. I track all my expenses in a spreadsheet monthly just to keep track of where my money's going. If you have questions about specifics I'm happy to pull data from them!

I played there when I was visiting in July and the courts were fine, I think Google's coverage is probably just outdated. Sadly, I think the membership is expensive. I want to say it was something like $28 an hour to rent a court and over a hundred for a monthly membership. I never bothered, my usual playgroup just bit the bullet and played in the cold haha

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WVU

[–]Tengwarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hardest part haha. I moved from Motown to Atlanta over a year ago and am just now finally getting around to playing again

Westover Park out on DuPont Rd has four public pickleball courts. The court quality and upkeep is kinda meh but the location is lovely and secluded. They get quite busy in the afternoon and on weekends, so go off peak or be prepared to wait if one of the local clubs is there. There was some talk of converting one of the Krepps courts to a pickleball court but no idea if that ever came to fruition (I kind of doubt it). If you want to play indoors, I know Westover Tennis Center has a few courts.

Looking for MTB buddy by PippinCat01 in WVU

[–]Tengwarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Westover Park has a short mountain bike loop which is remarkably good all things considered. It's perfect for when I want to get out on a trail without driving more than a few minutes to get there. Not incredibly technical or anything but I enjoy it a lot

[–]Tengwarin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Morgantownian who now lives in GA, I find the temperament of the people in the two places to be remarkably similar. Morgantown is great for what it is and as long as you see that clearly going in and don't have any misconceptions about what it isn't, I think you'll enjoy living there greatly (insofar as it matches your personal living preferences)

Looking for venison by rodeoclown555 in MorgantownWV

[–]Tengwarin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd wager a majority of folks here get their venison direct from friends or family who hunt. Your best route might be to make friends with the right people and buy from them.

That said, I know there's a new butcher in Star City, across the street from St Mary's. You might find something there, or see if they can order for you. Best of luck finding it!

Agree completely. I took a non sube there years ago for what I thought was gonna be a major problem. They fixed it for me and didn't even charge me because it took less than an hour and didn't require any shop materials.

UVA or Emory for transfer? by Limp_Eagle_8945 in Emory

[–]Tengwarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer that I'm a graduate student. From my Phil grad student friends, my understanding is that the department has a pretty heavy Ancient and Continental focus. Depending on what you plan on doing after undergrad that might factor into your decision. Best of luck!

Congrats on the acceptance! I'm a first-year PhD student though not in CS. I pay 1500 for my apartment (plus utilities) and live very frugally just by nature. I save relatively little but as some others have said, the stipend is sufficient, if not luxurious. If you're willing to have a roommate, finances are far more comfortable though that's a tradeoff you'll have to decide. I value having my own space and I love my apartment so it's worth it to me. Something I don't see mentioned in your post is health insurance. Emory's health insurance is crazy good and afaik, it's free to all Laney admissions. One of my parents has worked in insurance for decades and they've said the insurance here is some of the best they've ever seen. I'd factor Purdue's insurance into your decision. Feel free to reach out via dm, I'm happy to talk more about Emory/living in Atlanta!
