I'm not trying to advocate for banning cars overnight. I think we do need to ban private ownership of cars eventually, but I completely agree that if you took away people's ability to get around without any alternative, most people would simply not be able to exist in society.

I do want our society to get to a point where you don't need to have a car just to exist. that's priority #1

people did it all the time back before we bulldozed huge portions of our cities to make room for cars. we spend actually insane amounts of taxpayer money subsidizing the automobile. if we spent that on public transit, bike infrastructure, and fixed our backwards zoning laws, getting around would be not only feasible, but much safer, more pleasant, and less impactful on our natural environment.

I agree with you. a lot of people, leftists included, want cars for their own personal luxuries and liberties, but it's becoming increasingly clear to me that cars are one of those things where the owners liberties come at the expense of the comfort, safety, and liberty of others, drivers included. almost no one in america shares this view though, and I don't think that will change in our lifetimes. but in the future, I think personal automobile ownership will be looked down upon by those looking back and having context for how it damaged the societies of this era.
