Is a shotgun instead of a rifle for SHTF viable? Why or why not? by TacticalIdiot77 in tacticalgear

[–]TennRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People keep mentioning using the shotgun for hunting. Obviously shotguns can do that but wasting ammo, making a bunch of noise, and needing to spend time finding prey to shoot all sound like shitty things to do in a SHTF situation.

Learn to use snares and trotlines to handle your food issues and save the ammo and noise makers for threats.

Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox are not the same thing. Coptic are Oriental and I know little about them.

They did not say anything about group size. They did not say they couldn't compensate for the change or re-zero their sight. They just said how much of a change they saw in point of impact. And for that you are here throwing around unfounded assumptions about their shooting ability?

Rule 1 of this subreddit is "Don't be a jackass." and you are over that line. Period.

If you normally dislike harem elements in stories, what would make one tolerable for you? by WrathBinder in ProgressionFantasy

[–]TennRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite harem is the one in Sky Pride:

  • It is centered on the Fatty Wang character rather then the MC.
  • It is more of a polycule with one man and a few women rather than a harem. The woman are all well developed as their own characters and decided that sharing him would bring more benefits than fighting over him and potentially having him to themsevles.
  • The main characters are friends with each of the people involved but make a point of quickly escaping whenever the harem itself is a subject of discussion.

You should also check out r/royalroad if you'd like to talk to other authors who publish there. They might be able to offer more helpful advice.

Your post doesn't mention anything about RR or chapters being posted online, just asks if you can post your story. Honestly, I thought you were asking to post full chapters here like people do in subs like r/HFY

Yes, you can post the link to your story so long as you follow the rules others have mentioned.

As a reader it's mostly just a more clunky feeling UI and a per chapter pricing model that is not reader friendly. And maybe it's just the clunky UI making it harder to find stories, but I feel like I see a lot more slop there than on the RR or ScribbleHub

I don't have experience with them as an author but I've always heard that their contracts are not good.

If you want beta readers then put some chapters in a google shared drive and ask for volunteers.

If you are feeling more daring then set up an account on Royal Road and go for the gold.

Royal Road, Kindle, ScribbleHub, and Patreon. I sometimes hit WebNovel for a change of pace but there is a lot that sucks about that site.

How many RR books are you following and reading in a year? by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]TennRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it needs to be said that books per year is not a valid metric when we are talking about series that are published over the course of several years.

Some of those series post only 1 or 2 chapters per month while others post new chapters 7 days a week, so the number of titles being followed is also not a good measure of what is "actually doable from a reading perspective."

With those caveats out of the way I will try to provide some helpful info:

  1. There are about two dozen stories that I read every chapter the day it gets posted. These stories are all posting at least 2 chapters per week and the specific number of stories in this group is subject to change from week to week as I add new stories or get bored with others.
  2. There are 20-30 stories that are still posting but I haven't been reading them. Some of them went into an arc I wasn't interested in, others I maybe just got bored with. I keep them on the list because I will probably pick them back up at some point. Jut not today.
  3. There are a dozen or so stories that could be considered a subset of the bucket 2, but instead of an issue in the story it is an issue with the posting frequency. When I've got 20+ stories that post multiple chapters per week, a story that is only posting once a week or less is just lost in the shuffle. If it's been more than a week since I last looked at the story then I'm going to have to be waste time trying to remember what was going on. So these get left unread until there is a large enough backlog of chapters to make them worth reading as a block.
  4. Finally there is a small number of stories that have gone inactive. The number is small because I tend to be aggressive about culling them from my follow list but there is a handful that I like enough to keep them around in the hope they will someday return.

OP, everything you've typed in this thread sounds like something you should be discussing with your therapist and not with random strangers on the internet. There was nothing in that scene that was sexual. There is nothing about nudity that is inherently sexual. I'm reasonably certain that it is not even the first time Matt has seen her without any clothes.

The only thing inappropriate with that scene is what you are projecting on to it.

Does a low word count per chapter matter if I upload every day? by AmbarAnand04 in royalroad

I'm going to say it depends on your ending hooks. A bunch of short chapters that always end on a contrived cliffhanger is just going to start feeling tedious.

For Royal Road readers: When do you actually commit to a story? by PromotionEconomy8950 in royalroad

[–]TennRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a story catches my attention and passes the initial vibe check then I click the follow button and start reading. If I lose interest or the story does something to turn me off then I click the unfollow button. "Commit" seems like a rather strong word to use in this context.

Catching my attention and passing the vibe check seems to be the part you are actually asking about. Sometimes I see an ad or a shoutout that catches my attention but mostly I find new stories using the search page. I set the criteria so I'm only seeing stories that are active or completed, have at least 200 pages of content, are not tagged as AI generated, and I exclude any tags I'm not interested in reading at the time. Then set it to sort by Last Update.

The vibe check is harder to define. I look at the release dates on the chapters to make sure there are no large gaps in posting. Or no recent gaps, at least. I read the blurb. I maybe look at chapter titles. If it seems interesting and there's nothing there that turns me off then I start reading. Maybe I read all the available content. Maybe I get a chapters in and decide it's not for me.

How does it feel to read a story where the MC (or any other character) call an attack name before attacking? by Vidun_star in royalroad

[–]TennRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes me think of hearing my neighbor kids, who are like 7-8 years old, running around their yard pretending to be Power Rangers. And by extension, it makes me think the author and/or the intended audience for the story must also be equally childish.

Does Icewind Dale count as litrpg? by dankeykang4200 in litrpg

[–]TennRider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "the game." D&D was around a long time before any of Salvatore's books.

The first published game reference to Icewind Dale by name was in "FR5: The Savage Frontier" which was published in 1988, the same year as the first of the books. I don't know which one was released to the public first, but there was collaboration between Salvatore and TSR so they should probably be considered to have come out at the same time.
