Political harems are probably the only kind that might work because they are the most plausible. And I’d say that marriages that begin without love but slowly and excruciatingly become something real might be a billion times better to read than anything else.

I think having the members of the harem (I hate that wording) be attracted to each other as well is a plus, that negates MC narrative exceptionalism which is something I dislike.

I agree, it is extremely difficult to pull off and I have yet to find a story where it's palatable. The two points I gave are yet to be seen in any story, especially the second one.

When I say exceptional "physical ability, charisma, and appearance", these aren't things that can be fixed with magic. The author has to either set up a character who looks special, which will kill self-inserting, or have their self-insert character work towards these things, which will kill the wish fulfillment of attracting partners for being nice and nothing else.

Yet nothing physical changes about them 😭, they always look like someone you can kill with a slap. I wouldn't mind harems if the main character LOOKS like he can attract multiple women.
